I think Pluto is only considered a planet because it was grandfathered into the current (confusing and not entirely adhered to) rules on what is and isn't a planet.

Odds are, this will just be classified as another KBO.

I'm a Java developer. Please read the docs about Ajax before telling me something that has nothing to do with it.

Ajax asyncronously calls JAVA functions without needing a page redraw. When you see that "Loading..." red box in the corner in gmail, its actually using JAVASCRIPT to make an asyncronous call to JAVA and getting the results back.

Java is not Javascript, but AJAX brings the two together.

    No question about it!

Performance? Assembly will give you the best performance followed by C and C++. All three of do not have that great of support for web apps..
However, Java is almost exclusively being used for large enterprise websites. Its powerful enough to handle the big jobs, and using the appropriate app server will give you great performance.
Cost of development is heavy in initial development, but pays for itself in maintenance. Most libraries and APIs are free in java (struts, spring, hibernate, tapestry, etc etc etc...). I'd say they are second to perl in terms of freely available and powerful libraries and APIs.
Development tools? Just check out the (free!) eclipse platform.

In my mind there is no question that Java (more specifically J2EE) is the best option for general large scale enterprise applications.

Ahh, someone who wants to make a front page slashdot article, but doesn't understand Java. What's worse? The editor that posts it, and doesn't understand java.

The source code being released isn't "source code for several key Java applications," its the source to Sun's java application server (called "Platform Edition 9"). Other app servers you probably have heard of are WebSphere, WebLogic, and.... the open source JBoss! The reason Sun is open sourcing their app server is because no one uses it!

If a company wants to run a giant professional website and has money to throw at it, they'll get WebLogic or WebSphere to run it. If they don't, they run tomcat (if no EJBs requried) or JBoss. No one uses Sun's app server cause its new and immature.

This is not a step towards opening Java. The only relation this has to Java is the fact that it runs Java code and is written in Java. Just because sun open sourced it doesn't mean its thinking about open sourcing the Java lanugage.

Instead of IP bans, you can setup an IP 'greylist' that means if you create an account from the greylist, they can't post much or have to wait a couple days after registration to post.

So if I troll a bunch, my IP gets greylisted, so if I create another account, the new account is penalized (have to wait so many days before posting, can only post 5 times a day until I get upmodded X number of times, etc...). It will soon be so much of a pain to keep recreating accounts to troll, it will no longer be worthwhile.

Try posting loggined in something against slashthink once when you have a different opinion and see what happens. Your karma can probably take it if it gets modded down, but I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.
