Do what I do, once you are about to submit, copy the entire article you are about to post, submit it, then put it in your journal. You can't forge the time and date on those, so it brings your point home even better (I already have an article in there that I was rejected on, then someone was accepted a day or two later).
My theory isn't that they only accept from people they like (I'm rejected all the time, and in the hof for submissions), its the author that reads it and finds it interesting. Something Hemos finds interesting might be something michael hates. So look at the "science" section (usually michael with a sprinkling of timothy), and try to write articles similar so michael will accept you.
Just my personal theory.
The poor poor "globalism" horse. Its been beaten, shaven, racked, hung, torchered, beheaded, quartered, and the various body parts buried in unmarked gravies in various countries around the globe (no pun intended).
Now the important question. Since when is globalism (and most of politics, for that matter) news for nerds? Seriously, this isn't your average slashbot katz bitch. Can we switch to something more technical? Between globalism and the infamous "email from kabul" (that Katz STILL hasn't proven is real), there isn't much. I'd like to hear something along the lines of the From the Hellmouth series, but, Jon, you're starting to venture off into the non-nerd areas.
That's not what we want here. You aren't getting many pro-active posts like you usually do, which should prove that you are venturing into the danger zone of journalism.
Lets talk about something technical next time(with links, so we can see your background and were the info and facts are coming from).
I agree. Now as far as the "filter katz posts", well, lemmie just point to an AC comment that hits the nail on the head when it comes to Jon Katz and his articles.
You are mighty brave to say this openly, and I completely agree with you.
When it comes to games, the only ones published here are the highly anticipated geek games (CivIII, Black&White, etc...). Tux racer has none of these, cept a penguin.
MAYBE if it was linux only, I can see it, but, quite frankly, its a racing game. Not many nerds get into racing. And another thing is that its been done SO MANY TIMES.
Lets just leave it as MarioCart being the champion "cartoon" racing game, and try for something new, shall we?
Yeah, I'm your average slashdot whiner, but they post stuff that would obviously be complained about!
Next article will be "Microsoft is bad, linux is good"... just wait and see.
FYI - Its best to whine when you have 50 karma, so after you get modded down some, you can work your way back. I call it the "Slashdot Game".
Hey, its a repeat, but everyone go here and find it amusing and concede. We all have different beliefs, and this is a harse environment to evangalize either side. There's no possible way to switch a christians mind, because whatever proof you have against god, is nothing more than a "test of faith", and its equally as hard to switch aethiests, cause they always have to ask for proof (although switching either side IS possible, its just down-right tough).
I try to sit semi in the middle. I am a christian, but I love science and believe they can co-exist. Keeping an open mind does cause conflicts, but I don't let them cloud my mind.
Oh, and this *is* off topic, but I got plenty of karma:-P
OK, as already pointed out, this letter is 99.9% likely to be a fake. Jon, either say something, update the article, present proof, or make a retraction!!
I can't believe that someone working for slashdot would actually believe this stuff.
Jon, I'm not your biggest supporter, I'll admit, but this is just garbage! Why would you think some kid would single you out, find your email (which isn't easy), and write an email (I'm sure he's using OutLook on his commodore to do it, too).
Jon, lets stick to nerd topics, and quit milking politics. News for nerds? Funny, I can't think of many nerds that enjoy talking politics. Lets stick to Open Source, Linux, and internet tools like your boss says.
OK, how long ago was Kabul liberated? About a week right.
How did this "Afghani" attain Jon Katz's email address? Its no where on the slashdot site (I think its katz@slashdot.org, but that's cause he had it attached to his "name link" like 6-12 months ago). So this kid gets on the internet and actually does some type of investigating to eventually write an email to Jon Katz.
Yes, this is the lowest Katz has gone! He must be skimming off that moderator crack...
Perhaps this "Afghani" sent you a picture he got, too, right? It looks like this, right?
I tell my mother when she gets emails like the one you have, katz, is to first check snopes, then check the local news (if it isn't on the news, then it isn't real, usually).
Think about it. A computer geek in afghanastan finally gets his computer (commodore, mind you), and whats one of the first people he emails? Jon Katz? Hmmm....
Sorry, but I'm waaay to skeptic for this (and I'm religious...)
I agree. Not only that, but Katz is milking the war in Afghanastan again.
There hasn't been enough time for the "little village" to be sent new computers, and how does he even know how to connect to the internet? Dial into his local IP? Junoweb?
Next question. What, in gods name, does this have to do with slashdot? News for nerds?
I hate to flame/troll whatever, but I read this comment last Katz article, and I'm starting to agree with it...
If you don't have any money coming in, you spend ALL of your time trying to land something that pays
Programming for free is a way to land a job that pays. Like I said before, it impresses the employer. Look at most tips on getting into the gaming industry. They always say, they only accept coders that code because they like to. They want to see what you code -outside- of work. Open Source is an advantage in this manner.
Put yourself in the position of a recruiter. Here's a guy that's been unemployed for 3 months, that's been working at McDonalds to get by, but he's got a portfolio of coding from an open source project he's been working on; versus a person that's been sliding by making web pages. Who you gonna hire??
Because a lot of people are getting laid off their jobs, I'd expect Open Source to skyrocket. When the very few jobs actually start hiring, they'll want people that kept busy, and aren't going rusty. Not to mention you can show you're great coding style on open source projects (ie - during the interview, say "yeah, I wrote anim.h & anim.cpp, please open them up on the website and see how I animated this spline using the super-quick algorithm").
If you unemployed are smart, you'd log off of slashdot, and get your coding groove on.
are there any free services left for those suffering from corporate oppression?"
What a pile of crap! I understand invasion of privacy, but you are just paranoid!
Big brother is watching you, the illuminati can hear you through copper wires! If you are that paranoid, my friend, the best thing for you to do is move to siberia and become a hermit.
Quite frankly, no one is watching, and if they are (we're talking millions of transactions a second. Something no one would do for under $80k/year), you probably don't do anything that would attract their attention. Quit freaking out!
I saw this title, and thought it was some freaky star wars porn.....

an ethernet connection on a console isn't some gaming messiah. there are currently no games which i could see benefitting from this on any console, nor any in the future.
I share your opinion with PC good for some games, console for others (although, I'll add sports games to the console). Now you mentioned "Gran Turisimo" and I mention "sports" for console. Once you play a game for, say, a month, you understand the AI and what to expect. The only way you get replayability is by playing the unpredictable human opponents. Especially for Racing and Sports games. Ethernet is a messiah for consoles, because I can play my football games over and over again, and still lose, cause there's always a better human opponent out on the net (and the computer isn't a challenge anymore).

It was later found that Khan had stolen the Genesis machine, and killed Kirk's son!!
Sorry, you can mod me down, now.
Burton won?
Guess hosting "Reading Rainbow" paid off...
No can do!
Microsoft software doesn't work on 'two-year decayed' commodores(tm)!!
For great justice!

"The Forever War" by Joseph Haldeman has an interesting bit on cloning.
;-)
---Spoiler---
Towards the end, which is several thousand years in the future, almost everyone is a clone, and it tells a bit about how this affects the world.
He also really plays with the einstein-rosen bridge (worm hole) quite a bit.
Its not a ton of stuff, but its a -great- read regardless
Also, although its been probably written 20 times by the time I write this, Asimov is often credited with inventing the term "robot".

That's SOME fridge to be able to freeze to > 10 K
P4s dominating Athlons, lots of DDR SDRAM boards... a WinCE Transmeta box
;-)
Let the flame wars begin!
This is a beaut of a setup! Perhaps we should bring in KDE, gnome, emacs, and vi in the discussion?
The real questions are more difficult. At what level do you allow workers the freedom to use the internet for personal stuff?
Simple answer: Is it the company's computer?
You know the rest of the answer.

No it can't. It was the hardware overheating (the venting in those demo boxes were atrocious).
MS IP Toilet?
Nope! MIT already has enough proof of the concept that MS can't copyright IP Toilets.
