You know, people with superior hearing hear people who have bad hearing talking about them as they walk down the street all the time? Many if not most people make idle commentary about people passing by when they are bored, and people with bad hearing make false assumptions about how far their voice carries. Happens to me regularly... someone will make a comment about "the guy with the sideburns" to their friend, then I look em in the eyes, and they get a guilty look on their face. Really quite annoying, and I can see how it would drive a more mentally fragile person around the bend...
My wife thinks she can whisper. She can't. I've finally convinced her to stop trying, when it comes to saying things about other people that she doesn't want them to hear.
The 4th amendment doesn't get suspended just because you incant the word, "children."
Where's the constitution for the victims of crime, rather than the perps. I guess that balancing act doesn't matter at all you now, does it. So pretty much, what you are really saying is, that the perp, who -had the pictures-, deserves more constitutional protections than the victims, who got, nothing, when you let this freak walk. Yep, that's a good system right there.
What are you talking about? The children in those pictures/videos have the same exact Constitutional rights as the accused.
You're mixing up a criminal harming someone with our government ignoring someone's rights. Police can't search your property without due cause or a warrant, but that doesn't stop a criminal from breaking in, because criminals are criminals, meaning someone who breaks the law.
It's a completely separate issue. Get it?
And yes, sometimes that means that a bad guy goes free. But I'd rather have that risk, than to have a government that ignores people's rights. We'd have to have another revolution, in that case, which would be a much bloodier prospect today than it was a couple hundred years ago.
Does that mean that Spielberg is gonna get sued for E.T.? What if I watch E.T. in winter 2010... Will they have to re-release an edited version with glowing heart censored out?
They'll just digitally move the "glowing" effect to E.T.'s wrinkled ass.
The man's name was Peter Tripp, and it was 1959... I should have Googled before posting, but I'm a little out of it... I didn't get much sleep last night.
Sleep deprivation isn't fun... I had all those symptoms and more during my various bouts with insomnia. The "hearing your name" thing was the worst for me. After missing enough sleep, I was almost convinced that there were ghosts talking to me.
Not to mention the extreme mood swings and destructive behavior I'd sometimes exhibit. Anyone who's gone 2 or more days without sleeping will, I bet, seem crazy to a psychiatrist. After 3 days, they'll seem crazy to anyone.
I remember reading about some DJ quite a while back (1920's, maybe?) who, for charity, went without sleep for a number of days. When he was on the air, he was fine. Off the air, he'd see spiders, hear voices, have mood swings, etc. I guess his personality changed drastically after that, too. Moral of the story, don't deprive yourself of sleep on purpose because you want to see what it's like.
One thing, though... I never thought they were spiders. I thought they were just bugs of some unknown type, which actually managed to freak me out more. Spiders I can handle, but mystery bugs can be anything
I had a friend who was committed a few times because she would hurt herself. We would go to visit her, and each time I couldn't help but think that, if I got stuck in such a place, whatever my mental state was on the way in, I'd be insane on the way out.
It's not anything like a normal environment. Adults get treated like misbehaving and retarded children. Inmates fight over the stupidest things, probably out of boredom... What TV show was on could lead to actual violence. While I don't doubt that being in a place like that encourages people to leave as soon as possible, I don't see how it can possibly help someone with a real problem.
Hopefully, there are places that are better than the one I visited.
Excellent post, but I disagree with this one part:
"There is no contradiction between free speech and requiring accurate labeling of the content of products so that everyone can see what it is that they are buying."
I see it as interfering with free speech by requiring additional "speech" that you may not want to be added to your product. I have no problem with companies voluntarily labeling their products, but being forced to do so is a step too far.
And before someone tries to bring food or drug labels into this, that is a very different thing. Due to food allergies or diet requirements you can suffer physical harm (even death) from eating the wrong thing. Nobody ever died from opening and playing a video game.
Also, this sets an awful precedent in that the ISPs can point out that it's ok for them to block "objectionable" content where they get to define what's objectionable without any review."
I would think the ISPs would be more concerned with the perception that they are somehow responsible for policing for this kind of content. Once you open the door to that kind of expectation, how can you close it again?
"4. We were still there enforcing no fly zones, sanctions and the like."
This is my biggest problem with the war, personally. Saddam and Iraq were already contained. After 9/11, we had our hands full with Afghanistan. We were supposed to be taking care of al Queda and hunting down bin Laden. Our focus should have been there until the job was done. The job is not done in Afghanistan. In fact, there has been considerable backsliding.
I'm not saying Saddam wasn't a bad guy, or that he didn't deserve to be removed from office. Maybe, one day, we would have had to invade anyway (though, I doubt it). But we didn't need to do it then, when we already had a sizable force committed elsewhere.
I'll hold off on trying any of their wiretapping suggestions until they release guides on "DIY Legal defense" and "How to Avoid Getting Buggered in a Federal Prison".
Still, if you're feeling paranoid, by all means check your phones. It's true, nosy neighbors could indeed be spying on you. Never underestimate the average person's voyeurism urges...
"And following the analogy, consumption of CG child porn would encourage the production of more child porn, but given the fact that you can produce it without running afoul of the law, you'd get more CG than real child porn produced."
I'm not sure I agree with that. It takes a fairly skilled individual to make realistic looking CG, but anyone with a camera and access to a child can produce kiddie porn without needing much skill at all. And, with today's massive available storage, people who are into this can just keep downloading everything they see. They'd have to make a concious decision to avoid the real stuff in order to have the CG take over the market, and, sadly, I don't see that happening. It would be nice to believe that the virtual stuff would take over, edging the real stuff out, for no reason other that there would be fewer real children involved.
This was in central Minnesota, the last place I would have expected it. Oh, and I see I got modded as flamebait on my original post! How exiting! I don't think I've ever gotten that particular mod before:)
Well, then, that makes the Patriot Act even better. Since, apparently, the terrorists hate us because of our freedoms. Take those freedoms away, and they have even less reason to attack us. Mmmmyep. It's got nothing to do with bombings, moving troops in, political, economic and social manipulation, etc. etc...
Just as an aside, my wife and I went out to eat a while back. The special of the day advertised that it came with "AM fries". My wife asked "what are am fries?" and the waitress, looking appropriately embarrassed, responded, "those are American fries. They're just fries." Good lord, are we still doing that? That's sooo 2002!
"The doctor is actually on his last regeneration right now"
Tennant is Doctor # 10, which means 9 regenerations. Time Lords get 12, originally, so there is room for at least three more. In the Five Doctors special, the Master was offered a whole new set of regenerations if he helped the Doctor out, so it's possible that the 12 regeneration limit is either artificial or can be renewed. So, it shouldn't be too hard for the writers to figure out a way to keep the Doctor going.
I have a friend who is my movie Guinea pig... He's a movie buff, and sees almost everything that comes out, and his taste pretty much matches mine. If he really likes a movie, I'll go see it. If he doesn't, I won't. It works pretty well for me.
Which, with DiCaprio's huge forehead, makes him a shoe-in for Tetsuo. Especially at the end, where he goes out of control :P

Herc/Xena guys? I'll tune in, but only if they sign up Bruce Campbell. I don't care what role.

When I leave, though, I'm planning on EARNING the blame I'm sure to get :)
Maybe they are. Have faith, and remember you don't get to meta-moderate God.
Only because God doesn't post on Slashdot.
When you miss that step and start to fall, you will pass a large sign that reads "Next time, use the elevator... FOOL!"
This proves that God has a sense of humor as much as anyone.
I'm not being sarcastic, it's a speech impediment.

We feel the same way in the US. Well, all of us except the criminals.
Little of column A, little of column B.

Yes to the black suits. Not because they look cool, but because black is very slimming.
It seems like the RIAA is throwing all the shit they can think of at the wall to see what will stick. Seems a little desperate to me.
