Pushing Leopard back to October lines it up for Christmas and for the fall product line refresh. Releasing Leopard in late spring lines it up for... nothing much.
I see this as the opposite of Vista's release. Apple will release a mature, tested, stable product with actual usability improvements that runs *faster* on existing hardware.
These people who claim they reject science don't seem to reject the fruits of science.
Perhaps a better polling question would be:
"Would you take anti-biotics to treat a deadly bacterial infection, would you rather just die?"
These folks who *say* they take creationism over science are just mouthing empty words. Their actions speak more clearly. How many Christian Scientists *actually* die of apendicitis? How many christians actually tithe their 10%?
Lots of people today claim to be religious. But by the standards of their Puritan ancestors 2 or 3 centuries back, they are plainly athiests, pagans and idolators.
Historically, religious fanaticism has been the norm, not the exception. With that perspective, we are living in very liberal, enlightened and rational times. Each generation is more secular than the last, and everyone knows it. We're just watching them pull their wagons into a shrinking circle.
If you ever find yourself having irrational thoughts, emotional problems or any kind of mental health issue, DON'T TELL ANYONE. Keep it a secret. Do not seek help. Your career depends on it.
Thank you NASA for showing us how it's done.
And good luck finding humans without human frailties. I hear they hang out with the unicorns.
Windows 95, 98, 2K, XP, all were seen as a big improvement over their predecessor. People lined up to get their copies and to upgrade their machines.
But here we are, months after the business introduction of Vista and people still debating it's merits with no sign of commitment. New machines are still being sold w/ XP by default, with the "option" to upgrade to Vista. It turns out that a Mac running Parallels w/ XP can run more Windows software that a PC running Vista. Developers are still writing for XP and are just not pumping out the Vista apps.
Microsoft used to be criticized for being backward compatible to the stone age. Vista is different. Vista breaks lots of Windows software. Lots. '
I see this rollout as being a complete failure. Much worse than Windows ME, more like OS/2.
For about a century, three companies have largely cornered the market on incandescent light bulbs. And what a great cash cow. Fragile, short-lived consumable commodities - found in every home and business. You can't live without them and you can't make your own. Captive market.
But now, new companies have finally broken into the market and newer technologies - like compact florescent and LED - are finally take off, in a big way. CFL sales are throught the roof this year. Looks like the market is no longer cornered and captive.
And lo, at this moment moment, one of the original Big Three presents a more efficient incandescent bulb. Patented, of course.
What amazing timing. What a coincidence. Somebody up there must like GE. I just wish it happened a few decades earlier.
Lots of people will keep their hardware and not switch to Vista. Lots of people will get new hardware with Vista. And a fair number of Windows users will say "screw this" and buy a Mac. Looks like an excellent year for Apple and Dell.
If this is true, it will really hurt Vista. Might be better to ask: "iPod: Vista killer". Skeptical? How big is the installed base of iPods? Now, how big is the installed base of Vista? What's easier, ditching your iPod or waiting up buy Vista? When enough people wait til later, a product doesn't sell. Ask Osborne.
Romanians survived 25 years under Ceauescu. I don't think they will cuddle up with Big Brother again any time soon. Their president knows that. Gates might too.
The US constitution was a best-effort. It was not written by god on a tablet. It's authors said it was deeply flawed and they hoped it would last 20 years. It needs an over-haul.
Because smart people can't agree on even the most basic intentions of the constitution's authors. Do people have a right to arms or not? What kinds of arms? It there a right to privacy or not? Even from the government? It is NOT CLEAR. And it won't EVER get any clearer.
Some people say that is the beauty of the document, it's flexibility and ability to be reinterpreted.
I say bullshit. I don't want to hear about *implied* rights. Spell it out clearly, in contemporary english, with no spin. We don't live in the dark ages, we can examine the ideas of the past and use what is useful.
I think we need to update the language of the constitution. Maybe we need a constitutional convention every 10 or 20 years as Jefferson suggested, to carefully clarify the language. Baby steps.
And do we want to add new rights? Should there be a right to euthanasia, a basic job, basic health care, an abortion, basic shelter, a basic education, porn? How about freedom FROM religion? We seem to *effectively* have some of these rights, but not literally. Why not?
Would someone please get Richard Stallman on this? And Linus Tovalds?
> Do not open or save Word files that you receive from un-trusted > sources or that you receive unexpectedly from trusted sources.
You are picking nits.
Yeah, I know, Slashdot quoted Eweek who misquoted Microsoft. I just don't care.
Do you think we are somehow immune from infection by a "trusted" source? No? Then stop complaining. We don't need more lawyers in the world. More signal, less noise.
BTW, how many times did the sacred Microsoft security page use the term "root-kit"? Exactly zero. I'm glad someone is reading between the lines.
My final project for the semester is attached as a Word document. If you have any problems reading it, please let me know. Me and everyone else in your address book.
Don't have to worry about grading it. By the time you read this, I will have used the root-kit to grade it myself.
Nice porn, by the way! You dog! We'll make this our little secret.
>"We need to get ahead of the curve before we actually lose a city, which I think could happen in the next decade"
We. The problem is the word "we".
I try to live as a citizen of the planet.
We already lost a city: Bagdad. Embargo, invasion, air bombardment, suicide bombings, environmental poisoning, hundreds of thousands of preventable deaths. Dysentary from bad drinking water is not as flashy as a nuclear bomb, but is just as effective. These are the real weapons of mass destruction.
If a snow-turd like Newt is the really best our Democracy can do, maybe we need to reexamine Democracy.
I propose we select public officials by Lottery. Completely at random.
Don't laugh too quick. What's the worst that could happen? An alcoholic in the White House? An bumbling idiot? A chronic liar? A child-molester? An egomaniac? A greedy weasel? A corporate puppet? We've had all these and worse. J. Random Citizen would do less damage, and probably more good.
And this way, we might live to see a Woman in the White House or a Black man or an Atheist or a Homosexual or... (gasp)... a Poor Person.
Ironic that Ian Anderson named his band after Jethro Tull, who pioneered scientific agricultural methods, (like planting food in rows) and many improved tools. If Tull had doggedly protected HIS intellectual property, we would still be using the same tech we did in 1700.
Last I heard, there was no expert concensus on the origins of oil. Biofermentation? Byproduct of Geological activity? Pink fairies? We don't know even the most basic fact about oil.

Just 2 days before a dicey US election. No coincidence.
It's all distraction and manipulation. Expect more today and tomorrow.
Just pick a news source and see how many headlines they give to this.
Instead of the unpopular war, crumbling world support, failed foriegn policies, record deficits, burning holes in the constitution, etc. Oh... look, a circus!

Wikipaedia does not allow us to examine physical remains.
You are probably referring to cultural or linguistic anthropology. I do not know how useful Wikipaedia will be in that regard as it represents the group opinion of only a very small fraction of humanity, almost completely english speaking, white, western, educated, well-off, christians. An old lady in muslim Ethiopia is probably not well represented.
