  1. MOD PARENT UP on AI Going Nowhere? · · Score: 1

AI will probably never be used extensively by robots. At least not until well after we've got it running networks of computers (replace your sysadmin with an AI? Sure!) If an AI is truly intelligent, it should be able to learn new tasks no problem. Throwing this learning software onto robotic hardware really does nothing, the AI doesn't see the "optic sensors" as "eyes" but rather another data set to analyze and make decisions on. These data sets are totally irrelevant, they could be visual, auditory, or TCP/IP. It's all the same to a machine.

Have you ever seen the Michael Jordan commercials (forget what company they were for)? The one with Bulls MJ playing against 40-year-old MJ. That's exactly what they did there. They found a body double who was basically the same height and skin color and who could play basketball, pasted MJ's head onto his and hence we have Jordan vs. Jordan. Very convincing too. And yes, it still looks realistic when speaking.

You could post a lot of MP3s to a website and say they're popular artists.. But have them be filled with something public domain. When they sue you, just claim "Oh, well it wasn't really this file.. download it first, jackass." It'll raise their legal costs (they actually have to CHECK their facts) and maybe they'll stop bothering because it gets so expensive. Or not.

A lot of companies are already collecting internet sales tax across the US, mainly because they want to cover their asses if congress says "Ok, you owe us 5 years in back sales taxes." Supposedly companies are on the "honor system" to pay state sales taxes for internet orders, but a lot don't and there's nobody FORCING them to pay the taxes (unlike in-state taxes.) The smaller stores don't charge sales tax, but the bigger companies (Apple, Dell, Radio Shack, etc) already do. Others will probably follow suit. I knew it was too good to last for long. :)

In other words, it's not even a clever hack, the guy just bought some rather expensive car stereo equipment and linked it together in the way the manufacturer recommends. And I can run Linux in my car on a Zaurus anyway. Not too special.

Microsoft isn't dumb. Hell, before it was released that's what people saw it as, but now the hardware in the Xbox is nothing to write home about (you can getmuch better for about the same price on walmart.com.) Besides, every console since the SNES has been sold at a loss, they make the difference up on the licensing and SDKs. At $99, Sony lost about $17 on each PSX they sold. Ditto for Sega (Saturn and Dreamcast) and Nintendo (GC and N64.) But you buy a few games and they've already made it back. So this really isn't as big a deal as you make it sound.

Yes, this means that only companies with mega-bucks can make consoles. Why do you think Sony and Microsoft (two of the largest companies on earth) are still around when Sega (a poorer company that had much more experience in the market) is gone. Nintendo is only around because they're still riding the momentum from the SNES (and the massive wave of cash that is the Gameboy.) Consoles are expensive, if you want to enter the fray you better have near a billion dollars to sink into it before you start reaping the rewards.

Yes, but for every high profile victory like this, other people get scared off and don't send spam. They don't need to collect the money, less spam will lower their bandwidth costs and make their customers happier. EarthLink had an ad campaign a while back explicitly hawking their spam-blockers and popup-blockers. They're obviously trying to make the internet a less harrowing experience, and if it helps them keep customers, kudos to them.

  16. Re:Legal vs technical vs payperemail on Earthlink Wins Another Spam Award: $16 million · · Score: 1

The thing about spam is that legal solutions CAN prevail because there is an enormous volume of spam but it comes from a very small number of people. A single spammer can easily sent 10 million e-mails a day. That means every court ruling has an effect on these guys. Companies don't often go looking to spam people, but when someone spams them "REACH 100 MILLION PEOPLE FOR $100" they're probably gonna bite. They see the potential for reward as being great and there really is no risk involved. Sue the spammers, maybe then they'll move on to real work.

  17. Re:Right back at ya on Dr. Dre to pay $1.5 mil for "Illegal Sample" · · Score: 1

I'll agree with you that the vast majority of rappers aren't very good. But there are a few out there (including Dr. Dre) who are actually making music. The thing about rap is it's more about the lyrics than rock music (though with tools like Ludacris and Nelly it's becoming more about bubblegum catchy beats) so the music doesn't matter quite as much. Besides, go check out the Roots sometime.. They're a rap group who plays their own instruments on stage. :)

  18. Interesting.. on Dr. Dre to pay $1.5 mil for "Illegal Sample" · · Score: 1

This has been a hot topic in the music industry for almost ten years, it's nice to see it getting discussed here. But IMO it depends on the extent of the sample. If you sample some instruments or maybe even a couple spoken words, that falls under fair use. But then there are songs out there that will sample an entire chorus, or a chord progression. Those artists SHOULD have to pay royalties. Getting greedy doesn't help anyone.

FFXI is just another EverQuest clone, and supposedly not a very good one at that (which is why Square was in no rush to bring it out over here.) I'm looking forward to Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, the first Tactics was one of if not the best Final Fantasy game ever. Oh well, I guess video games will never be as cool as I remember. 21. Why is this on slashdot? on Unreal II Demo Released · · Score: 1

Unreal 2 has been out for a while and was summarily tanked by pretty much every critic out there. Simply put, the game is no fun to play, it's basically just a rehash of every FPS to come before it and offers absolutely no innovation. Nevermind the action is far from "fast and furious" and the weapons really aren't that inventive. The only somewhat cool weapon in the game is found on the very last stage and you only get to use it like twice. The "story" is AWFUL. The characters are total cliches. The levels are pretty much the same except for the textures.

The demo will be decieving, because the game actually is pretty fun for the first 2 or 3 levels. You expect the game to go somewhere but it really just stagnates and becomes progressively less and less fun as you go on. The only reason I finished it was because I was stoned. Let me warn you against the same mistake I made. Don't bother with this one.

Hrm I thought CCW laws usually made you choose a gun to carry. Most people who carry a gun have a "carry pistol," i.e. a smaller gun like a glock 26 or a snub-nose .38 special. I've even seen a couple 5 shot .45 ACP carry guns. The snub-nose .38 is probably the most popular, mostly because revolvers are much more simple to use and it's a very small gun with a pretty big bang. I'm also rather sure that you can only carry one gun at a time, because there's no real reason to have more than one (unless you're a police officer.)
