Exactly. This has much less to do with the DOJ subpoena, and a lot more to do with how the rest of the market is performing. More specifically, I think it has a lot to do with Yahoo's lower than expected earnings for the last quarter. Just looking up YHOO on Yahoo itself, you'll see most of the related news headlines are about Google and are not related to the DOJ subpoena.

I think the MDD actually *does* have USB 2.0 (at least some models do), it's just that the OS X drivers don't support that specific USB chipset. I think someone had created some drivers that supposedly got them working a couple of years ago.

There's some information here about it.

Was there an actual argument about this in the first place?

I guessed I missed that part about this not being attached as a rider to a bill that would be political suicide to vote against.

  7. Re:Oh my on Real-ID Passes U.S. Senate 100-0 · · Score: 1

    How are these changes bad?

I consider this to be strangely worded (from section 202):

    (b) Minimum Document Requirements- To meet the requirements of this section, a State shall include, at a minimum, the following information and features on each driver's license and identification card issued to a person by the State:
    (1) The person's full legal name.
    (2) The person's date of birth.
    (3) The person's gender.
    (4) The person's driver's license or identification card number.
    (5) A digital photograph of the person.
    (6) The person's address of principle residence.
    (7) The person's signature.
    (8) Physical security features designed to prevent tampering, counterfeiting, or duplication of the document for fraudulent purposes.
    (9) A common machine-readable technology, with defined minimum data elements.

    ...

    (e) Additional Powers of Secretary- The Secretary, in the Secretary's discretion--

    (1) may, in addition to the requirements of subsection (b), prescribe one or more design formats for driver's licenses and identification cards that satisfy the requirements of this section in order--

    (A) to protect the national security interests of the United States; and

    (B) to allow for clear visual differentiation between categories of driver's licenses and identity cards (such as to differentiate between driver's licenses valid for multi-year terms and temporary driver's licenses);

Subsection (e) is a bit vague to me. Subsection (b) states the required information that each ID will have. The bill mentions "design requirements" along with "requirements of subsection 202(b)". I'm not sure if "design requirements" means visual appearance (like section B above), or document requirements (as titled in the 202(b)). This could mean that the Secretary (Secretary of Homeland Security) has the power to prescribe how a driver's license will visually appear, or it could mean that the Secretary can (in his/her sole discretion, as dictated by "the national security interests of the United States") determine whatever documentation requirements they want to have.

Not that that really matters, because then there's also 202.b.4 - "identification number". So it doesn't even really matter what's on the card, so long as it has an ID number in a machine readable format (RFID?), tapped into a nice, large database is a bit interesting to say the least. I can think of really good things that could come of this, or really bad things.

This is a national ID, no question about it. It wouldn't worry me if our nation had an open discussion on that topic, but the fact that this is obfuscated as a rider on an appropriations bill bothers me.

I believe it was called the "blue box," and back then Classic was known as the "yellow box," but don't quote me.

Blue box was/is Classic, I think the Windows part was rumored to be the red box. Note: it was just a rumor though, I don't think there's any evidence that it actually existed.

These days I'm more impressed by cars that get 60MPG than I am by cars that have 500HP. Not that I wouldn't mind driving a car that has 500HP, but for daily practical needs I'd rather take the car with higher MPG.

After all, 500HP in a car is pretty much useless on the 405 (or any other heavily trafficked freeway).

The way it works is that the industry decides how much money it should make. In this case, for example, they decided that their sales should have increased about 33% year over year during a recession. Well obviously, since they didn't, it *must* have been due to piracy!

It's a solid and healthy industry, but even though it is, I really believe it's going to be important in the years to come to make sure we embrace the risks as well as the sure things. To make sure the freedom of artistic expression is nurtured and kept alive. Because I believe that in keeping diversity alive, it will help keep our industry alive."

On the other hand, though, I think he's making more of statement about independent films vis-a-vis their mass marketed counterparts.
