Another factor is teachers trying to unload teaching unto a software package to simplify their jobs.
I've seen it happen first hand, as I worked for a public school distric in the IT dept. They were always asking us to buy or install some software they bought with their budget money that they could plunk the students in front of and say "Do this." This happened from grade school through high school in this district. Unfortunately it was also the one I attended.
First, the book never actually ended up coming to market, insofar as I'm aware.
Incorrect. My brother has a copy on his bookshelf of PA Year One. I would but at the time I wasn't a big fan.
Also, from what I can recall from their explanation at PAX04, I believe the publisher never paid them (although who knows, the contract could somehow say they never would see a dime since they didn't really know what they were signing) and held the rights to the first 5 years of PA strips. They were free to make books based on year 6 and up. The legal issues just tied up the first 5 years.
Why don't developers make their games and sell directly online? What the hell is the point of being in an industry driven by the "latest and greatest in technology" when your distribution model is based upon last millennium foundations.
Unless you're OWNED by Vivendi/EA/Activision (or under some long term agreement), there's no reason why you should feel you HAVE to play ball with them. If your game is good enough people will pay to download it. If it sucks, sorry Charlie, that's natural selection for you.
The funniest thing is they say "they make a lot of money selling to your kids." Immediately I picture parents totally unaware of what their kids are doing. And secondly, it wasn't until I got a job in high school that I could afford them. So who is REALLY buying these games, is it really the kids or ignorant, lazy parents?
If only I had a dollar for every time a/.er posted an end of the world scenario over OS lockin instead of offering to spearhead a real solution to Windows, I'd be living on my own tropical island not caring even more.
We know it's horse crap, but the ppl who pass the laws don't. When they get lobbied to screw over people that don't pirate games (because we also know that pirates will still pirate no matter what they try), the law makers will lookit this and go "1 in 5! Oh my!" despite the fact that they probably have a kid with a dozen friends who buy their games legit.
Until I blinked which brought me to my senses and I realized A) they'll never do it anyway and B) if they did i'm sure it wouldn't be mandatory for you to use it.
I personally have no stories, but I have friends and friends of friends with tales that would put a shiver down your spine.
Plus just lookit the msg boards. The SWG one (I read it with hope that there will some day be a post saying THIS GAME ROCKS! COME PLAY AGAIN!) is full of "Can I get an answer to my ticket??" type posts. One poor soul paid to have his character moved from one server to another and 3 weeks later it still hasn't happened with no acknowledgement whatsoever from SOE.
That's the problem with amateur actors... They try too hard to be the character. It's not something you can force it has to seem natural. Lookit Red Vs. Blue (I never saw Troops wasn't that a funny haha one too?) where the guys who write/star get it, and while it's suppose to be a total joke, they are totally comfortable pulling it off so it feels natural.
Why not just stop by your local EB Games? They apparently already have it in store
Is pre-ordering a game really that necessary anymore? There was >1 million pre-orders for Halo 2 and I still saw plenty on the shelves when it shipped. I can even find copies of WoW in my area and have been able to since it was released as well.
If Congress doesn't extend it that's another way it could die it's oh so deserved death. There has been some opposition to it from the hill since the dust around 9/11 has been settling. Do I think it would get extended if the vote were today? Perhaps. But we'll see come the end of the year what will happen.
I sir, shall join you in your holding out. I shall raise you a wait until it hits the budget cinemas. Unless it is said to be hotter than grits, then I'll probably fold like a wet dish rag.
If this catches on couldn't ITMS just charge you 20 a month for 20 songs instead of.99 per song. Isn't this how Napster already works -- a monthly fee for unlimited access?
Then its a service fee to access their servers, not a "payment for goods".
From the sound of the article (blurb really) it will be a free download. The SWG site has nothing posted about this, is this gonna be a free expansion for players??
Why not just use an online alias? That's what the Internet was all about 5+ years ago. Now people are trying to be anonymous and get their 15 mins of fame online.

Great just what I need, to be sitting behind a bunch of geeks reaching out and blocking the screen while trying to strangle him.

Hey WormHoleFiend if you're reading, pick me some lotto numbers for Saturday. Apparently you have a gift for seeing the future.
just to be a nerd for a min but i like her armored look in Kingdom Come the best.

It took me a while to remember what lol meant w/o being immediately followed with "OMG"
Oddly I have fewer problems with /. rendering in Windows than I do in Mandrake Linux 10.1. My only guess is that it has to do with fonts.
Some times *I* forget I'm not really William Braski with all the spam that gets sent there.

I don't have mod points today but if anyone decides to mod this it should NOT be Funny because it painfully true

The difference now is 40+ years ago when Marvel "created" all these characters, they didn't really have the clout they do today.

No I think its eclipsed by all those that have paid 15 dollars a month for 1.5 years to play SWG.
Then its a service fee to access their servers, not a "payment for goods".

that this guy builds his own home PBX but hosts his blog on Blogspot? Or is that his next article? "Built a blog server!"
