When I Googled "I was talking to my son last week (he works on Mauna Kea), and he mentioned some new observations" to see how far this had spread it came up with a glorious 5 hits. That's spreading like wildfire?
What do you expect out of mainstream media? Insightfulness? We can't even get that out of sources that we can actually trust to cross check their references.
Given that I can write instructions in fairly simple terms that makes that machine that you're cursing go over a couple hundred thousand records and correlate that data with a few other hundred thousand records in a matter of seconds? Yeah, I'll be the first to confirm that computers have made my life easier.
Don't forget that we have enormously complex systems today because they're doing more and more for us. Those that bemoan them and wish back to the days of their Commodore 64 are mostly those who haven't tried to do something productive with their Commodore 64 in the last decade or two.
What we go through today is a small price to pay compared to the alternative.
I find that investing a lot of emotions into machines is about as intelligent as kicking yourself in the ass.
As far as things that don't make sense to the average user? Who's the average user? I work with about a thousand end users and I honestly don't think that any one design is going to be suitable for even a simple majority of them. People need to become more dynamic about how they use their tools.
What's insightful about this? Should everyone who bitches about taxes pick up and leave their country? Should anyone who bitches about their wives run off and get a divorce?
No wonder this person posted AC, they doubtlessly don't apply this kind of thinking to their own life.
While I have been spending a little time in this thread defending the naysayers, simply because they're right in some cases, telling someone they can wait on another promise of Linux superiority have fallen short time after time is no answer. Either Linux needs to step it up and take the brass ring or the community has to admit that they've missed an opportunity. Which is it going to be?
This isn't too far from the Linux on the desktop debate. Those who say that they don't care about Linux on the desktop because it doesn't support their apps are 100% correct. Either the open source needs to answer the call or understand why people go elsewhere for their technology.
As for the idea of there being some non-DRM legal-for-download PDFs? So what? I'm sure these same titles will be importable to the iBooks system. Aside from that it does me no good to be able to download A Tale of Two Cities when I really want Under the Dome. And in some cases it won't do for reasons outside of one's control. Apple would be wise to cut good deals with textbook publishers early on. This is an area where there is no alternative. You can't step into a class room with just any book on trig when the prof wants you to have Trigonometry (9th Edition) by Margaret L. Lial, John S. Hornsby, and David I. Schneider.
Yes, I know ephemeris data can be grabbed from the GPS satellites and I know that newer smartphone apps are now storing map data locally
So you're admitting your rant is a non-issue?
I still find a full-featured GPS handheld to be much more useful than a GPS app on an iPhone.
Care to back that up? Your entire post hinged on the idea that you can't save maps locally and you turn around in your closing remark and admit that you can save maps locally but go on to again proclaim that dedicated GPS is still better. I own a Garmin iQue M5 and while it's a great device I don't see a single thing that it could do that can't be done on a cell. Either I'm missing something or you don't have a leg to stand on here.
So Obama using an axe instead of a scalpel on an issue that has hurt absolutely no one is OK with you?
I wonder how you're going to feel when he's facing a real crisis and does the same thing.
The bottom line is that this could have been handled better. Maybe not by Obama himself, maybe he would have needed some help but it still could have been handled better. And to be frank, I don't think we've seen the limits of how far this will go. I think there is going to be a backlash from this that is going to reach non-commercial ventures. Just wait and see.
What difference does it make who answers this in what fashion? All parties have idiots, lemmings, hypocrites, asshats and liars. You'll never get the plain truth out of people and to think that the majority of any party's members are going to see that they're just a supporter of the other side of the same coin is unthinkable.
If the majority of people ever came to see the truth about their parties there would be a major political upheaval. And, from where I sit, it's never going to happen. For as many glimmers of hope we've had that the choke hold on Washington or even state government was going to be broken they've all been false hopes in the end.
But, please, if you're dissatisfied with the dim wittedness of our leadership please take the time to consider a third party alternative. If for no other reason than to show that those in command today deserve a vote of None Of The Above.
So OSX and Linux are the same OS? After all, we can't have it both ways.
Uh, so Sophos' hard drive encryption software is because Windows is mismanaged? Huh?
According to several sources on dictionary.com, Google is a verb.

No. If you SEE it going supernova tomorrow, then it already "happened" millions of years ago
Betelgeuse is only about 650 light years away. The milky way is only about 100,000 light years across.
What do you expect out of mainstream media? Insightfulness? We can't even get that out of sources that we can actually trust to cross check their references.
So someone who doesn't really use a cellphone as a phone at all is thinking about giving it up and you're impressed? Am I missing something here?

Or people watching NetFlix/Hulu or a multi-user home or someone who's video conferencing....
Your assumptions may have been fine 5 or 6 years ago but today they're nonsense and we're only going to see more of the same.
Any intelligence observing us will already have decided the bulk of what they need to by the time they bother to have a conversation with us.
I'm sure they've seen enough of our massive political systems to know that honesty is a dead virtue among the vast majority of right and powerful.
What's insightful about this? Should everyone who bitches about taxes pick up and leave their country? Should anyone who bitches about their wives run off and get a divorce?

PhysOrg is good for science news. Otherwise I'd recommend starting your own and hoping it takes off.
Junkies seem to enjoy it.
That's a pretty weak argument.

The kinds of people who are really going to ante up for the iPad use their cell phones for GPS already.
It's the same line used by Kyle Reese in the first movie, you stupid bitch.
You've been terminated, fucker.
Come with me if you want to live.

First links that link to blogs that link to articles. Then links to social networks to link to links that link to articles.
Where does the stupidity end?
I hear they do like the pictures tho.
Do you think authors should read you a bed time story to get paid?
You could have been an artist. Don't blame them for your lack of foresight.
