I think there's something really to be said for how long it takes to remove the crap-ware, if it's faster to do a nuke-and-pave. I've done several decrapifications of peoples machines after they've owned them for years (so I really can't just nuke and pave at this point for fear of losing something they hold dear), and was shocked at how horribly slow Windows' Add/Remove Software function is. I've spent a couple hours before doing it, wondering how such a process can be so time-intensive. Reminded me of the old days of troubleshooting extensions in the "classic" Mac OSs (pre 10.0).

I did wish Microsoft would throw in a "1-click bloatware removal" requirement into their OEM agreement, it's not hurting Dell/HP/Gateway's image nearly as much as it's hurting people's perception of Windows PC in general.

My only problem with year based versions that are date-stamped versions is that they tend to be stamping their own expiration date on their software. Which is ok if you're Intuit and rake in cash just because you throw out a slightly differently buggy version every year without ever fully fixing things (sigh). But most software is intended to be used for a few years, and seeing a 2009 next to a 2010 competitor will hurt more than seeing a v4 next to a v10.

Just because multitasking is available on a similar platform, doesn't mean it's ready for mainstream use on another. Their other option would be to hold off multitasking on the iPhone just so people can have it on the iPad at the same time, which just seems silly.
People forget that iOS didn't start off as an App platform, evolution is and has been required, and it's not always the prettiest little thing. As annoying as it was to not have multitasking on the iPad the day it was on the iPhone, it wasn't a deal breaker for anyone.

In all seriousness, I think it will probably move more toward multi-mode tablets (docked for desktop-style use, an optional attachable clamshell w/keyboard for laptop-style use, and solo for pad use) after the initial fad wears off and people realize the necks and hands hurt. It's also great for attachment sales. Or most likely, just follow slower evolution like the MacBook Air.

Though, they really need to use something better to differentiate that it's for tablets and not just say "3.0 is for tablets only!". It just leaves a bad numbering scheme where the under-informed masses think they're getting older software with their brand new phone.

Google should have avoided platform fragmentation from the start, but they didn't. Now they just need to roll with it and make it easier on the consumer.

The Apps MAKE the device, not the other way around, Apple.

If Apple loses the consumer's confidence that they'll be able to run what they want, they won't buy the devices.
