"You should probably check your facts before trying to troll. SAS has a strict policy (and always has for as long as I've known) that people are NOT allowed to work past, I believe it's 6:00PM"
I'm not trolling. The fucking HR person told me how bonuses/raises were computed. That was NOT secondhand info. Now, this was about 12 years ago. It's possible they have changed but that's the way it was without any exaggeration on my part.
You forgot to mention the fact that they're also naive as hell, too. There are few grown-ups in this day & age that would turn down a Microsoft job. Times are tough, and only the wealthy (in both time and money) can afford to have a conscience.
Really? I'm pretty sure the people I know in IT wouldn't talk to to Msft about a job. Literally everyone person I have any communication with has few nice things to say about that company. Of course, I'm a Java programmer...I don't hang out with.NET programmers.
Finally, there are many people with a conscience out there. Just because you'd sell your soul doesn't mean everyone else would. Personally, I'd rather do janitorial work than work for Msft.
Are you kidding me? Any other software company would get reamed here for paying their interns substandard wages. But if Google does it, it's not really exploitation.
I have no problems with companies paying low wages for interns PROVIDED that they are getting valuable experience and aren't just sitting at a desk. So, if Msft were to pay shit for interns, you wouldn't hear anything from me about it. I can't answer for the rest of/.
Then why did IBM tell me there weren't really any internship slots open, only co-ops, while I got an internship at Microsoft? And you can't possibly be implying that Microsoft doesn't pay decently.
I cannot answer for that. I've worked at IBM and they have given out tons of internships in the past. Research it yourself if you don't believe me. As for Msft pay...I really have no fucking clue how much they pay interns...nor do I fucking care...nor did I imply anything about their pay.
Give me a break.
I'm glad you're enjoying your internship at Msft. Maybe they will teach you not to put words into people's mouths...
This HAS to be the biggest bullshit I've ever heard in my life. I use to live in Cary, NC. I did contract work at IBM for over 6 years in almost every building in the triangle area (and there are a fuckload of them). Not once did I experience any of the shit you mention. Honestly, it was one of the best places I ever worked. Many of the IBM programmers were extremely knowledgeable and I learned A TON from these guys. They were far more advanced than any of the companies I worked for afterwards. I strongly recommend people check them out for internships. It's incredibly hard for me to believe anything you've said about them.
Oh, and I interviewed at SAS Institute. I ended up calling them after my second interview to tell them I wasn't interested after talking to several people who worked there that mentioned that managers would watch the fucking parking lot to see who wasn't staying late. Their raises are based 50% on how much overtime you work (and that was straight from the mouth of their recruiter).
"Google summer of code paid out a handful of students. That's it. It wasn't an internship. It is exploitation. Paying people very little money and getting more done from them."
The purpose of internships is for the interns to learn something working in a real world environment. They may only have the few skills they learned while in college and certainly aren't worth being paid much (as a rule of thumb). So, in a sense, almost all internships are exploitation by your definition.
Oh, and there are many many college students that have no interest whatsoever in working at Microsoft (because they have a conscience). Finally, IBM hires about twice as many interns per year as Microsoft (and they are actually paid pretty decently). So stick that up your micrsmurf pipe and smoke it.
Please study history for 10 seconds. The reasons that 95% of all regulations exist are:
1) Lack of rules/loopholes in the rules allowed greedy fucks to exploit the system in such a way that it created an unhealthy economic situation frequently causing wanton ruining of the average peon's life.
2) A powerful corporation or person used their influence (read: money) to push through regulations to strengthen their own position.
That's it, pal. They didn't sit there one day and decide, "Hey we need to write up 5000 page of regulations for the fuck of it!". However, the "all government sucks" crowd can't seem to get that through their heads.
Really? Show me your evidence, please. Personally I find the current state of the republican party repugnant but that doesn't mean the rest of the world is out being a bunch of sweethearts.
Oh, here...I'll even start you off...
Kyoto Treaty
Of course one example like this is not sufficient evidence.
"But then they realized that for timley delivery of movies, you really need hundreds of distribution centers, not several. Hundreds may be exaggerating a little bit, but Netflix definatley has more than several."
Netflix has about 35 distribution centers. There's one in or very near every major city in the United States. With that distribution they can provide 1 day turnaround time to the vast majority of the population.
I agree, I don't think they have to worry about Amazon much. Netflix has already lowered their prices and offers quite a deal I think.
CSI has had an immense impact on the number of people going into criminology and forensic science. So there's is hope.
Of course, money is the best motivator. Kids aren't gonna give a shit about science if they don't think they can get jobs doing it. How many science jobs are in this country these days (no including professors)? Why hire an american scientist to study stem cells when you can hire chineses ones that are much much cheaper, don't have any laws preventing them from working with stem cells, and have state of the art laboratories?
There simply isn't a compelling reason to become a scientist in this country. It's a great place for foreigners to come study but that's about it. They take it home and kick our ass with it. America is becoming a banana republic (economically speaking).
I love how people automatically accept the Mac as the superior computer. For me, the Mac is a piece of shit. I am a gamer. I need SPEED and I need something that plays lot of games. The Mac has neither. Rethink your premise that the PC is "cheap" while the Mac is "good". To me, the PC is a muscle car while the Mac is a BMW Mini. Cute for sure, but not enough power to get the job done.
I take issue with your analogy in the "faster, more powerful" department. The PC has always been more powerful than a Mac and at various times in history much more powerful.
If the games aren't worth $50, what makes them suddenly worth $60? Seriously, the number of games made for the Xbox that are worth a shit I can count on one hand. Those I am willing to shell out $50 for (a few might even be worth $60). Better graphics != better games. Many of these games suffer from fundamental design flaws that no matter how great the graphics will still suck major ass. Game companies need to work a little harder at what's behind all those fancy graphics and sound effects. I'd rather play Pong rather than most of the shit that's produced today. (No, I'm not kidding.)
I have an MX700 and I was excited to try out my new MX1000. Boy was I disappointed. The fucking thing wobbled. Possibly some kind of manufacturing flaw but it was completely unacceptible. I'm waiting for their 2nd generation laser. I've heard they have a gamer version in the works.
$50 for games is my limit (unless it's something truely amazing). So no XBox 360 for me. 95% of all games released for the XBox weren't worth the $50 they were charging (or $10 for that matter). I'm guessing it won't be any different for the 360. I'd also guess that the reason for the increased price of games is to cover the increased licensing fees Msft is charging the game companies to make games for this thing. Lets face it, it's gonna cost Msft a lot more than $300 to manufacture this thing and they want to make shitloads of money on this new console.
The democratic party is dead. They have no leadership at the moment so they flail about doing stupid shit like pretending they care about porn or violence in video games. They should self terminate and make room for a real party imo.
My understanding is that the porn industry already supports blu-ray. In fact, to honor the new technology, Vivid plans on releasing a new video: blu-balls: 47; the anxiously awaited sequel to blu-balls: 46.

Cool...now show me how you pull music off of it.
"Ogg seems to use more power thus decreasing battery life."
My Rio Karma plays ogg files longer than an iPod can play AAC or MP3s, so I'm not sure where you're getting your information.
"they've been buying DRM (and otherwise) crippled devices for years."
Yes, the iPod being a shining example.

Yes, because other countries are so generous that their national interests are irrelevant...

Actually, I think I'm one of the few people who actually has any taste in games at all.
If the games aren't worth $50, what makes them suddenly worth $60? Seriously, the number of games made for the Xbox that are worth a shit I can count on one hand. What about frogs and alligators? A Frolligator! Imagine this giant fucking frog with huge teeth leaping 20ft in the air at it's victims!

A choice between two fucking losers is not what I call "freedom". It appears a lot of people have low standards for what counts as freedom these days.
Apparently Microsoft Genuine Advantage is one of the services you can disable.

Yeah I want some of the crack this asshole is smoking.
