I think your number for a million dollars a second for rendering is WAY WAY overinflated. Lets put it this way, if Finding Nemo were done at the standard rate as you define it, it would cost 6 BILLION DOLLARS (100 minute film) to produce. So, you're saying their rendering efficiency is not only much better than normal but it's several orders of magnitude better? Or is it just the water scenes that are expensive?

I haven't seen any evidence whatsoever that media management has anything to do with it. From what I can tell, the thing that made shit happen was simply IBM's inability to make the G5 work in a laptop and also keep pace with the increase in speed found in Intel and AMD microprocessors. Laptops now outsell desktops so IBM's inability to make a low power, low heat G5 work is enough nail for the coffin.

King Arthur: Look, if he was dying, he wouldn't have bothered to carve 'Aaaauuuggghhhh'. He'd just say it.
Sir Galahad: Maybe he was dictating it.
    King Arthur: Oh shut up!
Sir Robin: Well does it say anything else?
    Brother Maynard: No, just "Aaaaauuuugggghhh".
    [knights making groaning sounds]
Sir Bedevere: Do you think he could have mean, 'Camaaaauuuuggghhhh'?
    Sir Galahad: Where's that?
    Sir Bedevere: France, I think.
Sir Lancelot: Isn't there a Saint "Aaaaavvvveeeesss" in Cornwall?
King Arthur: No that's Saint "Ives".
    Sir Lancelot: Oh, yes. "Iiiiiivvvveeessss"!

    Sir Bedevere: Whooooouuuuaaa!
Sir Lancelot: No no no, it's "Aaaaauuuugggghhhh" from the back of the throat.
Sir Bedevere: No I mean, "Whoooouuuuaaa!" as in surprise and alarm.

Saying that is the same thing as saying there should never be awards for malpractice because physicians are exremely reluctant to say their peers "made an error". It's not easy to win a malpractice suit as is and if the requirement were "beyond a reasonable doubt" which is what you need for a criminal case then you will simply make doctors immune to malpractice suits.

Oh, and that 20k in legal fees is nothing to the insurance company. They always overstate their legal costs. (I used to work for an insurance company.)

I don't doubt that some doctors are unable to afford the cost of the insurance, but if you follow the link I mentioned above you see that the increasing cost of the insurance has nothing whatsoever to do with the claims. In fact, the CBO and GAO say that malpractice claims are AT MOST 2% of all medical costs. In fact, the number of claims over recent years has gone down (only marginally mind you) but the cost of the insurance has gone up dramatically. Oh, and profits on this insurance have gone up dramatically as well.

"In some cases it is useful, allowing a company to recover from a loss of a valuable and knowledgable employee (or... er... summer intern) through changing strategies, locking in opportunities the employee knew about but hadn't become contractual yet, etc. In other cases it is a cudgel weilded by a corporation to keep employees from quitting."

I have never seen it used to "recover from a loss of a valuable employee). Not sure how that's even supposed to help with that. Non-compete agreements are always issued for one or more of the following reasons:

    1) You have specialized knowledge that your company doesn't want to end up in a competitors hands.

    2) You are a contractor and they don't want you to either a) switch employment to another company while maintaining your current gig or b) go independent and retain your current gig. This of course is due to the fact that they placed you so they have a right to that revenue.

    3) They are simply reducing your ability to get hired elsewhere and thus locking you in.

Now, item 1 is really just bullshit since you can be barred from giving away corporate secrets via intellectual property agreements. Number 2 is valid, and number 3 is simply abusive (but not uncommon). However, with number 2 almost all companies take it too far. So the contract will be written to state that you can't work for that company at all even if it's an entirely different division in another state. So 2 is valid but you have to be careful with how it's worded.

My policy is that I no longer sign non-compete agreements of any sort unless my company is willing to sign an agreement saying they will never find someone to replace.
