Spin it any way you like but I've never been on a project, web-based or otherwise, where they didn't care about performance. Until someone shows me something other than some annecdotal evidence that the development of Rails is SO much faster than Java or PHP that it makes up for the massively beefed up server you will need to run it on, I call bullshit. For that matter, most companies aren't willing to simply toss servers that they have that work perfectly well currently. Sometimes you just can't upgrade them enough to make the difference and since Rails apps are an ORDER OF MAGNITUDE slower than Java and PHP apps you will definitely have to make a huge upgarde to keep the equivalent performance level.
It's funny because I remember the time when people use to make all kinds of jokes about the old "throw more hardware at the problem" solution to problem solving but now that we have Rails it's simply Ok!
The other problem with Rails is that if you have an existing data model you need to code against, it suddenly becomes tons less attractive and less quick. Sorry but there's just too many limiting issues with it for me to call it ready for primetime for anything but the most low capacity, non-mission critical sites imaginable.
Apparently you never heard Madonna live. Her voice is absolutely horrible. The reason why she sounds better on her later stuff is that the dynamic pitch adjusters are that much better. They can make almost anybody sound decent. Take away the cool tech, and she sounds like a dog getting raped by Mike Tyson.
I'm glad calling me a moron makes you feel better about your intellect. Unfortunately, it doesn't change the fact that you simply cannot grasp the difference between ignorance and being mislead. Subltely of language is completely lost on your bovine intellect. Don't ever write a book or anything because you simply don't know how to use the fucking language.
And no, I didn't say the SAME FUCKING THING AS YOU, YOU STUPID FUCKING DUMBSHIT.
"The current government is indicative of what happens when a country's citizens are ignorant and apathetic."
No, the current government is indicative of what happens when a country's citizens are mislead by lies, propaganda, and corruption. In any event, you don't get the point of what I was saying. Americans don't like being criticized, attacked, or slighted by other countries. There are some exceptions to that rule but I won't bother going into it.
"Do the US posters here really feel they have more in common with all other americans than they do with counterpart techies in Europe or Asia or Africa? Which community are you going to give precedence to? The US government that is comprised of tech-ignorant people with vested corporate interests (RIAA / MPAA, Pentagon, et al) and little adventurous spirit, or the IT literate and neophile tech community?"
The tech-ignorant people with vested interests and little adventurous spirit in the Pentagon control and fund DARPA. Without DARPA there would be no internet today.
"People here spouting Fuck Em comments about the UN should ask themselves why they identify so much with their government."
We don't. We identify with America and the whole notion of what America is supposed to be. The current government has nothing whatsoever to do with it. We also tend to be very protective of our country even if we hate our current leadership. The notion that control of the system WE invented should be taken from us is a bit of a slap in the face. Don't forget, we are the ones who provide GPS capability around the world. We don't have to. We can selectively turn it off so only our military can use it or only certain portions of the globe. For some reason the UN doesn't think they can take that away (which of course the can't) so the EU is going to build their own GPS system. That's perfectly fine and they have my support. If the EU, UN, or whoever wants control over the internet, they can build their own separate network and they won't hear any complaints from me or most other people in the US.

Sorry but you're a fucking idiot who simply doesn't know what he's talking about. First of all...game consoles ARE sold at a loss (want an education in that business model?), secondly they ARE sueing the woman's daughter. What exactly is a lie? Perhaps you would like to discuss the lies the RIAA spews forth every year?
STFU and go back into whatever whole you came from. Feel free to come out when you actually know what the fuck you're talking about.
It wasn't designed to compete with the Mac Mini...it was designed before the Mac Mini was ever even announced. The device was designed to be used in developing nations that have very limited resources (especially power) and dirty environments. This device will draw a lot less power than a Mac Mini. I can assure you that the equadorians that will use this couldn't give a shit less how pretty your mac mini is. AMD originally never even intended to offer this to consumers in general. I'm not sure why they changed their minds but they made a deal with Radio Shack and there you have it.
So please stop with the Mac Mini comparisons. They are two entirely different products designed for entirely different purposes.
I agree. How do you get this fucking job anyway? Futurist? Are there really people who get paid to sit around and dream up this bullshit? If so, where do I apply? I've got a bunch of tarot cards that I think would do a much better job than this asshole.
From everything I've read about Environics, they have to be the most idiotic polling company on the planet...which is saying something. Read some of their polls and you'll see that the answer they are looking for frames their questions to the point of rediculousness. Clearly their clients are paying for these results.
Most polling companies are bad but these guys have to be the worst. Who gives a shit what they say?
"He makes a lot of assertions in his book that aren't backed up by reality; the idea that you need a "leisure" class in order to invent is the least of his obviously incorrect assumptions."
Sure, it's possible to have inventions without leisure but there's some heavy limits that come with it. Do you honestly think that some guy in a poor tribe in africa is going to invent the next version of the internet? the first fusion reactor? It just ain't gonna happen. These things cost money -- lots of it. It's possible that they would invent certain simple devices but it's questionable how valuable they would be outside of their environmnent and to the world at large.
So, while his assertion isn't logically valid it is realistically valid, especially today.
Both formats will be using AACS (Advanced Access Content System) for their content protection so both will require a internet hookup. This will allow them to flash the EPROM at will and essentially destruct your player if they want to. Still interested in using either one?
I disagree. I think it's foolish to try and say open source is about this ONE thing. It's about a lot of things and all those things have benefits. You can be certain that if the only benefit to open source was the ability to make your own custom versions of it, that it simply would not have succeeded as it has.
To me, open source is about:
1) sharing ideas 2) sharing code 3) getting a free lunch 4) getting the opportunity to contribute 5) being able to change it into whatever you want 6) creating competition (even against commercial products) 7) making a better world (think about it)
Given a little more time, I'm sure I could come up with more. But all those things are open source and they are all vital to its success.
"You see being easy to use is NOT what opensource is all about. It is the fact that YOU can modify YOUR copy of the sourcecode so that YOUR binary will do what YOU want it to do."
Not really. For most people it just means they don't have to pay for it. The fact that they can modify the source is pretty much meaningless to them since they have no desire to do so. I've used tons of open source over the years and so have my friends. Neither me or my friends has ever modified any of it. The most we may do with the source is view it in our debuggers since our code calls some open source library. This notion of customizing this stuff is really fucking naive and rarely done. I'm tired of hearing it.
In the end, all people want is for the software to do what they want. In this case, Opera did what he wanted -- Firefox did not.
DBUnit didn't scale to the enterprise level? It's a fuggin test tool. What scaleability are you talking about.
As for the XML...I have mixed feelings about it but it makes sense when you think it through. In any event, DBUnit will export the XML from your db for you.
OS/2 didn't have any viruses either. It doesn't mean it's not possible, it's just that nobody gives a shit about a product that has almost no market share. Where's the glory?
You are correct. There is nothing new in WoW except for the artwork. What I was trying to say is that I hope, in spite of its lack of innovation, that it does kill all the other copycat games just so that the gaming companies get a fire up their ass to make something new again. I am aware of the irony.
Yep, that's the reason for me. It's so trivially easy to cheat these online games without breaking any laws or having any chance of getting busted even if it were illegal that it's a fucking joke. Granted, most of the tables you go to won't be loaded with cheat teams but it only takes a small number to keep you in the red. Plus, over time there will be more of this as people get a clue. Some of the more clever people can even do this by themselves without the help of friends.
Anyone putting money into online poker is either a sucker or a cheater.
I'd say it's an 800lb gorilla but only games lacking innovation. Lets face it, the game industry is fucking stale and everyone knows it. I don't need to see 20 versions of Battlefield 1942. MAKE SOMETHING THAT'S FUCKING NEW FOR ONCE!
The consolidation in the game industry and the lack of investors to take any risk has put one giant cock-block on gaming. Personally, I hope WoW puts all these copycat, zero vision gamin companies out of business.
1) Natural numbers are arbitrary. They were created by primitive peoples and therefore have the limits inherit to primitive systems. We created them because they are retardedly simple enough that even we could use and mostly understand them. It doesn't mean they are in any way adequate to describe the true nature of the universe. Add to this the fact that mathematicians can't even agree on what's included in "natural numbers". Please, how fucking stupid...is this the best you can do?
2) No, I wasn't kidding. He should be shot. At the very least they shouldn't let him practice science of any sort since he's clearly incompetent.
Frankly, I'm tired of discussing this with you. You lack the imagination for it. It's because of people like you that the world progresses as slow as it does. Cest la vie...
Oh, and don't bother responding because 1) I don't really give a shit what you have to say at this point, and 2) I won't read it anyway.
His point is that not everyone is always thinking about money or making money. While you are correct that people who do are the entrepnreneurs of today etc. etc. you certainly wouldn't want the majority of the populace this way. It would be come an even more cold, and unfeeling world than it already is. I suppose you were a big fan of the 80's?

No amount of eligance saves you from the fact that Rails is as slow as a two-legged dog. It simply can't compete with anything else performance-wise.
Yeah and it only takes 4 lines of Ruby code whereas in Python it takes 15!
Apparently you never heard Madonna live. Her voice is absolutely horrible. The reason why she sounds better on her later stuff is that the dynamic pitch adjusters are that much better. "The US only built a small fraction of the internet..."
If you're just talking about laying down wire...maybe so. However, we built and run the heart of the internet which is its root servers.

Step 8: S3 rots in hell. Seriously, you fuckers are the Enron of the graphics card world.
