    i tell users to do this for passwords:

    - one of the three digit sets of your license plate
    - the first three letters of your mother's maiden name
    - the numbe of fillings you have

    stick em together and you have a seven or eight character password that looks like garbage but still can be remembered by the user.

    of course it's possible for someone to reconstruct this but it would definitely have to be an inside job - probably by a dentist.

    Why should it be that a prosecutor could not appeal?

    • because the resources of money and time of a government are "unlimited" while those of a defendent are finite. the government can always win by attrition.
    • because we believe in a system where a person can be held in jail or on bond pending a trial. defendendants could be held perpetually in remand for a petty crime of which s/he is never convicted.
    • the government could use points one and two above to coerce guilty pleas from innocent parties
    • once exonerated of a crime, citizens should have the ability to move on with their life without fear of a second jeaopordy.

    sound like good reasons to me.

    So what if Steve Ballmer bounces around stage chanting "Developers"? Does that prove that Open Source software is superior in any way?

    no. it highlights the possibility that he is neither more nor less immature than any given open source developers. does his actions prove that microsoft's "software is superior in any way?"

    please, if you're going to leap to wild, unfound conclusions based on the longest of all possible stretches of interpretations at least try and be humorous about it. okay?

    what would our world be like this technology wouldn't of been explored and helped along the way. i highly doubt the internet would be where it is today let alone any other form of technology.

    at one point, the internet was mostly dial up. don't you remember waiting patiently for that uucp script to cron so you could get your email?

    the biggest problem that the Open Source community faces in taking Open Source to the next level is . . . the immaturity and insecurity of some of the members of the community.

    ballmer screams "developers! developers!" like a cocaine-feulled monkey. steve jobs is well known for his temper tantrums and "reality distortion field". darl and the sco crew are running around like paranoid schizophrenics with delusions of grandeur (or even just plain adequacy)...

    and the open source people are "immature and insecure"?

    The problem with obscurity is not that it doesn't do anything

    by this logic, you should post your email address all over the web and rely completely on your spam filter.

    the bottom line is this: hiding your server decreases the number of scans and attempted xploits on your box. since secruity can never be 100%, a reduction in attacks translates to a reduction in breaches. basic math.

    true. but it takes days to install and my mother would never be able to set her own USE flags. i think mepis is looking to provide maximum customization while still being "end user friendly"

    and there is apt for rpm as well... so you can, uh, swing both ways.

    my personal favourite though still remains the rpm-based yum. truly, a package management system for the lazy!

    on security through obsecurity:

    while it is not a substitute for a good security policy, it is an excellent augmentation. the old saying goes that the only secure computer is one that isn't connected to the network. well, that's not really possible if yr running a web server, but you definitely don't need to advertise that you're connected... or how you're connected.

    let's use a military analogy (ugh). you may put your soldiers in an armoured transport... but they still wear camoflauge.

    i mean, after all, we all turn off ping before we put our servers up... don't we?

    no. say you're running something like zeus or (god forbid) jigsaw. the script kiddies will look in their bag of tricks, find nothing for your stated server and move right along.

    kind of a neat idea, actually.

    i wouldn't go spouting off about that if i were you. if your isp finds out that you are running as an "isp" they're likely to cut off yr service.

    it's not like the fbi wasn't running amok yesterday though... yesterday they were justifying spying on anti-war prosters by claiming that lawful dissent was potentially terrorism. their big argument to support this assertion? anti-war demonstrators have attended "training camps"... and terrorists often attend "training camps". ergo: protesters == terrorists.

    yup, SCO is out to steal & control all those Open Source riches, both GPL and BSD licensed flavors.

    wrong. they are out to destroy it - so their proprietary solution is the only alternative. open source software is like air - it's free and ubiquitous. if you're in the air resale business, you can't compete that. sco's plan is pollute all the free air so that their jug-o-freshness brand of bottled air can clean up.
