I would believe it. Having a criminal record can get you denied entry into Australia regardless of what country you are coming from (a quick google shows Snoop Dogg (US), a member from the band SNFU (Canadian) and David Irving (English) as people denied access to Australia for having a crimal record).
The Customs official probably had his fill of convict jokes for the day and decided to take wield his power (especially as the businessman didn't say "No, but" first before making the rest of the comment).
I don't know what it is about Australia and our communications ministers, we seem to get the members that have the least technical knowledge for this portfolio. First it was Alston (http://yro.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/09/24/148225) and now Conroy. Can we please get someone who knows about the tubes?
where any adult would need an ID that matched the name on the ticket
I see this as being annoying.
Does it mean that when I book a ticket I need to enter all the names of the people that will be attending? Or does it just say that I brought them and all those tickets need to be present when I enter?
In the first case, I have booked tickets before when I wasn't sure if Fred was coming but took a chance anyway. Fred wasn't interested but another friend Jane was so would I need to go back to TicketMaster to get the names changed over? (wasting my time and probably incurring another fee along the way). Also what happens if I become sick a day or two before the concert/festival? I now just can't give my ticket to a friend to take my place.
In the second case, what happens for music festivals where some of the group want to get there early but the named person wants to arrive later? Either you or your early friends are going to be annoyed so I don't see it being that handy either.
I keep hearing about people talking about linking tickets to IDs (for things like Big Day Out in Australia) so I'm not sure if I'm missing something or I just have unique experiences when booking tickets?
Recently I noticed that on Commonwealth Bank ATMs in Australia, that there had been LEDs affixed to the side panels about 3/4 the way up
I hadn't thought to much about them until now, but maybe they are the latest (and cheapest?) defense against these card capture systems (seeing that the IR would ruin the photos)
The camera would probably be attached to the top of the machine so that it looks down on the keypad (judging by the fact that it looks like there is still double sided tape on the opposite side to the camera hole)
You could thwart it by covering the keys with your other hand but from what I have heard the aim is to capture as many card/PIN combinations as possible so lossing one or two wouldn't worry them.
I went as saw 28 days later on the weekend and I did notice some of these spots, they were up in the top right corner near where the projectionist marks are (damn you Fight Club for teaching me about that and now sub-conciously watching that spot!)
I not sure that 28 days later really needs the protection - the camera being unsteady for most of the film should be enough to render compression useless:P
I think it is to show the whole idea of you shouldn't believe what you see feel of the movie (like who is good and who is bad!).
People would see Yoda fumbling towards them and assume they can kill him easily, only to have him bounce over their head and kill them easily because they didn't expect that from an old rickety man.
BTW - Here in Australia everyone laughed at this point too.
I don't see anything wrong with what has happened.
I think this is a case of the people involved being way to stupid for their own good!! If they had just post a couple of time would they get in this much trouble? I doubt it! But to post it 14,000 times!! What were they thinking?? And to email 35,000 people, which I'm sure a lot of he would never have met, but did so just cause he could!
These people got what they deserved! They were just stupid!!

BTW the strip club was in New York (http://www.news.com.au/story/0,23599,22268123-2,00.html)
I think they tried to set up these at the airport in Melbourne, it doesn't seemed to have stopped anyone.
"Oh look, pretty tape patterns on the ground. Now to camp in front of that moving thing!"

I suppose if they defrost him every 69 years it could work :P

Yeah I remember hearing that on the radio too recently.
:)
A quick visit over to telstra.com shows bigpond music as a link on the front page.
It would be interesting to be in the next meeting between ARIA and Telstra

Yeah it would work a treat. Well until you realise you are talking to a 45 year old woman knitting not the cute 23 year old on the ads :P

Looks like it is in teams of five, still I'd be happy with US$400 just for turning up with some friends :)
But if you do go to a lecture of his don't sit in the front row!!! You're just asking for trouble.
