Wow. Roman law? Where the fuck does that apply in any modern context. What is next? The code of Hammurabi? Oooh, biblical quotes! Lets bring out and interpret fucking cave paintings! Fun! Fun! Fun!
Well, actually, since you seem to be using old texts, let me get in a choice quotation.
2. If any one bring an accusation against a man, and the accused go to the river and leap into the river, if he sink in the river his accuser shall take possession of his house. But if the river prove that the accused is not guilty, and he escape unhurt, then he who had brought the accusation shall be put to death, while he who leaped into the river shall take possession of the house that had belonged to his accuser.
God fucking damn, Roman law predates the english language, get with the fucking program.
I'm not sure if you smoke crack or are retarded, but it is one of the two. Fair use has fuckal to do with having "the owner's permission". And really, Canadians should not be posting in regards to a proposed American bill. Sorry. Try again.
If you run a website, you should be backing it up. I thought this had already been established. CDs are pretty cheap. . . Hell, a raid array from a couple of years ago won't set you back a ton of money either.
Re winamp skipping under windows, the _ONLY_ thing I can think of is that you don't have dma enabled on the hard drives, your mobo is a pos or you have some really funky drivers somewhere. Seriously. Actually I don't know about winamp 3 (or whatever the bloated pos one is) I've heard nightmare stories about that, but I have an 1100 duron on a cheap board (k7s5a ver 1.0, cost me $5 in a bundle) and I can put out 2 winamp (2.75) streams thru different sound cards, streaming off the network with cpu load at 100% - no skips, _ever_. In fact, the last skips I heard were on a packard bell 180mhz after the dma controller went funky on that board.
I'd hate to say it, but there is a better than even chance that ATI's driver is probably causing the crashes. ATI is horrible with support for older hardware, I have an AIW too, and suffer with it. That said, I still wouldn't run XP. .. How is the video capture with the AIW under linux?
hmm, ok. You hire it support staff for a job where it assumed that they have bullets flying at you at some point in time - to say nothing that computers / servers are _very_ valid targets by the enemy. How much would you pay someone to do this? $100,000 a year? It's probably not an unreasonable starting point - I sure as hell wouldn't want to be sent to a foreign country where people want to kill me to do tech support for less - and I'm unemployed.
Multiply this by 4 years and lets see how much money that adds up to, and how many people the army could afford.
Granted, they could train their own people to support it right now, but these people _do_ have jobs and stuff to do right now - I somehow doubt "powerpoint training" will do it either.
OK, and to be honest, the military _is_ currently deployed and if you've ever worked with users you know that _any_ change will result is a mass of support calls and complaints from users. Confusion is not something that you want in the armed forces.
A lot of people in the armed services are even worse - some might call them ignorant or stupid - but the fact is a lot of them are intensely focused on doing their jobs - and they really could not care less about being technically literate.
I think this _is_ a waste of money, and is probably a "spend it or lose it" issue, but I really don't think switching operating systems / major application programs is a good thing to do right now.
------------------ Immigrant Special! ------------------ Here's what you have won! - One of the finest cells in Brooklyn. - None of the hassle of a trial! - Weekly "Russian massages" from the guards! - Free "Chinese Dentisty"! - Well lit rooms - 24 hours a day! - International (read bugs) cuisine! - Monthly amusement rides! (i.e. leg iron pull!) - Privacy (you know, from annoying people like your lawyer) - No more telemarketer calls! (or any access to a phone for that matter) - Guards who give you affectionate names - such as "sand nigger", "pull start", "slurpee nigger" and "camel fucker" And finally, when the entire DOJ still isn't able to find something on you after 2 years - A FREE TRIP TO YOUR NATIVE COUNTRY (regardless if you're expected to be imprisoned the minute you land).
Look, I know that there is a difference, but for certain groups of people in the USA, it isn't "hold for 2 weeks and release", in fact, it can be down right nasty. Certain cops / law enforcement are racist white trash, and realistically, if you're in their hands, you might as well be OBL or some other known terrorist - in their minds you're just being held there while a case is being put together against you.
Yeah, you can't mount as rw, sucks. I believe you can change some config files and reburn (or something) but I haven't tried it, and even then ntfs writing is a toss of the dice (from what others tell me)
A side note, knoppix mounts all disks are read only (IIRC) you have to right click on the drive in the file explorer (I dont have it running right now, I don't know the exact name, but you'll know what I mean when you get it). That aside, I was impressed with knoppix - booted faster than windows 2003 server and had everything running from a web browser to the usual sort of tools with no config on my part.
However there are some workarounds - you can "install" windows 2000/2k3, etc off the cd and after the first reboot (where the 640x480 gui starts off) shift f10 will dump you into a console with full access to drives, ntfs, fat, et al. You can also start some gui programs while windows is installing, but dlls, etc may not be there because they haven't been installed yet.;)
I'd still say best bet is to either swap the drive or use the preinstall environment. What a pain. I actually just ftp'd the files off the partition and killed the partition and reinstalled when I had a problem, but if you want to do something a bit more useful, I think you're SOL with knoppix.
What are these banners you speak of? Heh, seriously, it's kind of funny see content shrink. Admuncher is very, very nice - I turned it off and finally saw that yahoo hulk ad (which i'm sure brought seizures to quite a few).

Longhorn is coming out in a few years, we already have processors that are ~3Ghz, and really nothing to use them to their full potential on the desktop (at least for the majority of users) - not to mention 64 bit procs.
I really doubt performance will really be an issue. Granted the developers do need to make sure it is somewhat efficient, but I don't think it will be an issue for Microsoft's target market several years down the road.
New York, yes, it would, Brooklyn more specifically. New Jersey too. But then again, I'm just a bitter techie;) I used to have a 10 commandments, and #1 was thou shalt fear the zip codes that begin with 3. Prejudiced? me? naah. Experienced;)
Actually Washington DC I really have no complaints about virtually everyone that I've ever spoken with from the DC area was bright (or better) - and I'm sure there are plenty of other places.
Bring it on! Come on, seriously, put your money where your mouth is. I seriously want this to be implemented - and when some script kiddie finds a way to remotely kill pcs and pulls a "Anna Kornikova naked"/lovebug - I want to see your ass in court, and the asses of those who implemented this technology, being sued by thousands of companies for millions of hours of downtime. Not to mention some slightly disturbed person losing their life's work and going postal.
Of course, this is coming from a country where there are people who actually believe that Iraq used WMD in the 2003 war, so it's not like it is entirely unexpected.
linky? (yes, so the pollsters called white trash (white folks in the south), but face it, white trash votes, or is, at the very least, able to.)
My personal theory is that if someone raised the sea level by 50 feet overnight and flood coastal areas, and also managed to flood any trailer park that has more broken cars than trailer homes - you would get rid of a good portion of the stupid people in the USA./wave florida, louisiana, etc. I think it has something to do with the salt in the air, but then again, I'm not really an expert at these things;) Granted, the survey about the wmd was a bit skewed in people that they called mostly white trash, but hey, these people can vote.
Heh, no. You apparantly haven't played counterstrike recently. There are servers that autokick you for cussing (ass even!) among other things. This in a game that is based on what I would think to be more or less adult themes. Not that I can figure it out, but whatever.
First off - damn near _every_ passive radio frequency device will _DIE_PERMANANTLY_ if exposed to even 1/2 second of the inside of a powered microwave. Really, if you are that worried. . . put object in, hit start, hit stop as quick as you can, pull object out, done. It might not work for some sensitive electronics, but c'est la vie. Sure, it's extra work, but you're already being tracked unless you do "extra work" (as seen below). Others in the thread have given reasons on why the rfid tag would be killed at checkout time.
Secondly passive RFID tag ~= security badges. Same idea. Unique id hooked to a system that identifies you via magical invisible waves and a reader. I don't see people all afraid about the badges that they carry (or not, hooray for having your job sent to Canada/bitter) OMFG!!! teh hax0r could get my name. Seriously. The badge that gets you in the door at work that you carry poses the same risk. Of course, dateline hasn't done a special afaik on these yet.
Also - It's not like your privacy is raped already everytime you walk into a major store. Cameras everywhere, security guards checking out chicks pissing / changing (yes children, they do have cameras in the rest rooms), getting tracked if you pay by any other means than cash (you mean stores create customer profiles based on credit card and checking account numbers? The fuck you say!!)
Yes, yes, slippery slope and all that, but you shouldn't expect your privacy to be at all respected by walking into wal mart or any other big store. Really, you can't even go into a library in the wonderful USA now with a reasonable expectation of privacy. (I digress, but you folks voted in the people who passed legislation based on a soundbite from the executive branch, and more likely than not, didn't even read it.)
Granted, I don't see the *wow we must have this* logic, but I personally don't see rfid tags as being a really big problem.
Finally, _you_ _do_ also have the opportunity to shop elsewhere, i.e. places that don't screw over the local community / economy.
BTW. If you're really against this technology, I _suppose_ you could google for microwave waveguides and perhaps even how to make a microwave gun, hook it to a inverter in your car and point it at the front door of a walmart and take out 1/2 of the tags 30 feet from the door.
