    Not only that:

    Microsoft is end of life-ing .Net, ...

    I don't think it's worth to read anything below. .Net is the base for Metro and XNA and all the enterprisey MS products (Sharepoint, ASP.Net). Abandoning it would be suicide for MS.

    All you need for PC gaming is a $50 video card. The rest of the machine doesn't cost extra because you'd have machine for browsing web and for work anyway.

    The GM part is relevant, because you can only patent GM plants. It's the surrounding patent law that is creating the monopoly.

    IMDB already has similar recommendation system: based on what movies you liked, what pages you visited on their domain etc. It just doesn't recommend a general product, but a movie. So I don't see the innovation in Amazon's case, also, generic datamining shouldn't be patentable.

    You see it wrong. They're only locking on a single variable, the counter. It doesn't affect all writes that happen in the table (e.g. updates that don't change the ID field).

    MySQL uses table-level locking for MyISAM, MEMORY and MERGE tables, page-level locking for BDB tables, and row-level locking for InnoDB tables.

    MySql-s MyIsam is much faster with reads than PostgreSql. I think for the things people use NoSql, MyIsam is perfect. And when you want to move better ACID support, you can effortlessly switch to InnoDB.

    Solar flares are very different from EMP, as the change in field is much slower, so it mostly effects transmission lines, not computers.

    Error detection is a Layer 2 responsibility. TCP only does sequence numbers and resends lost packets.
