he has a point, doom 1&2 were fun run around a maze laying down CARNAGE on things that shouldn't live.
other than the name, the choice of weapons and the name of the things you have to kill this isn't doom.
if someone released a maze game with some ghosts called inky, blinky, pinky and whatever the other one was called and the game ROYALLY sucked then some retard on/. would still say dude it's pacman, what do you expect?
And who gives a crap about efficiency? This device needs 400w, i could run a wire to it and send 400w or I could build a nuclear reactor and blast it with 15 gigawatts!
Oh crap I just developed cancer, guess that sending 400w over a copper wire wasn't such a stupid idea after all.
You know, if I had to pick the thing I thought was the most useless overhyped waste of time about Gentoo, it would be compiling all that crap to make it run.
Thankfully it's a one shot deal and when you've done it once it is pretty much over with.
I have really conservative use flags, probably the only slightly wierd one is SSE for my P4, which probably makes mplayer eat 1% less cpu.
The absolute biggest strength about gentoo for me is portage, i'm from a freebsd background and just plain like how portage works. I also like the stripped out nature of the distribution, if you've spent most of your time adminning solaris or bsd boxes and then come to linux, you'll probably be just plain horrified at the crap that gets put into/bin or/etc on a linux machine.
Anyway, I could care less about tweaking 0.1% extra out of my pc, but portage makes it easier to keep it up to date and gentoo isn't completley braindead about its filesystem layout.
just ignore advocates, they'll go away eventually:)
gentoo is good for me, i don't think it's good for everyone - but i'm not everyone, i'm me.
my wife and my mother both use win2k and thats whats good for them, i help them out with patches and suchlike but neither of them really want to care about having gcc or whatever installed.
i chose gentoo because i like portage, and i find the way things are laid out to be more similar to the solaris and bsd boxes i'm paid to admin. there's nothing wrong with fedora or mandrake (which you dont use), but if Linux is about anything, it's about choice, and my choice is to use a distro that i feel comfortable with.
The reason people hate it is because it is frigging terrible. If Don Bluth had released a 30 minute cartoon of it, people would lambast it for being of lower than his usual standard and exceptionally badly written.
Instead, they released a "game" where the gameplay mechanic was watch some turgid animation, then at the critical junction move a joystick or hit a button at the right time to continue playing the animation.
Unfortunately, 9 times out of 10, the required direction or button wasn't clearly explained or worse still made no sense at all and then you got to watch the stupid death cartoon yet again.
Most people prefer pacman because in that game up makes you go up and right makes you go right.
I'll attest to this, the DC version of dead or alive 2 is far better than the ps2 one, just the same as soul calibur is better than soul calibur 2.
Still apart from this beach ball game and project gotham, there's nothing i want to play on the xbox (and i have msr on the dreamcast), so spending 200 on the opportunity to have a console with a crappy controller and more hassle with scart cables doesnt appeal.
In the uk the spa is a low quality food retail outlet, i don't think he'll be worried about their agents showing up at his house. Well maybe he will...
And it's good:) doesn't run so hot on my setup though.. amd athlon xp 2400+ 512mb ddr 400 7200rpm hard drive nvidia geforce 4 ti 4400 (128mb)
it doesn't detect my surround sound setup (sb live! with klipsch pro media 4.1's) it runs at medium detail @ 640x480 and gets pretty choppy in places... my only complaint so far is that it's so dark that even the flashlight doesn't even really let you see much (i'm trying not to turn my brightness up but it seems i may have to so i don't keep running into guard rails and such)... overall though.. i think the intro was a bit long.. i wanna kill stuff.. and kill it i shall... after the 15-20 minute introduction:-/ great for the story.. bad for my trigger finger
Strange, my PC is lower spec than yours but not hugely different and it runs very smoothly. When I loaded it up I was expecting a slideshow and it was very smooth. My only complaint is the really slow loadtimes and lack of ducttape, but my windows partition is on a crappy old drive running fat32.
for polygon throughput the tnt2 absolutely kicked the shit out of the geforce1/2 - it wasn't until T&L was commonly used that the geforces edged it out.
Guild Wars is by a bunch of ex Blizzard folk so the analogy is good. From what i've seen of it, it was already up to CoH's level at E3 and when they finally release it, it will be outstanding.
in a small company, my bosses trust me enough to make a decision on what to use and don't care about the details. in a large company i'll go with the flow and use solaris, windows, whatever the company is invested in.
picking an os for your company for personal reasons is stupid and wrong, it's a business decision you are making.
And to be honest, Epic does much better at licensing their Unreal engine out to third parties.
If all we have to look forward to in the next 5 years is a bunch of cheesy save the world from alien/hell/nazi/triad invasion in a FPS kind of way then i'm swearing of pc gaming.
There's only so many firstperson shooters and realtime strategies a gamer can take.
LIES!
I eat about 6 carrots a day and the only reason I don't creep around in the dark anymore is because my wife says it creeps her out!

I really doubt that in 2145 when some architect is designing a mars base that he will read this but...
CHOOSE YOUR GODDAM LIGHTING SUBCONTRACTERS CAREFULLY.

never heard of it until today either, but obviously it's succesful so i will be registering craigslist.co.uk sometime today for the London Massive.
404 file not found on the latest IE for win2k, will check it with firebird when i get home.

like i said, it's all about choice.
I know this is flamebait, but i'm rising to it:
wtf is this newbie vs zealot crap?

good post, I didn't know about that - if i had moderation turned on i'd give you a +1 informative.
I just emerge synced and the latest version available is still libpng-1.2.5-r7

Off topic:
Ferion: Like Master of Orion, only played against other people.
Did you notice MOO had a multiplayer option?
play thief or system shock if you want to be creeped out.

it cant have been in the top ten in Japan, unless it was the top ten bikini based volleyball games on Xbox charts.
It was a pretty fun game, mixing elements of volleyball and dating simulation.
The beat em ups were a bit lame tho, somewhere between Soul Calibur/Virtua Fighter and Tekken in quality.

They implemented some new features in the interests of National Security
actually it's transform and lighting ;)

I'm betting Tabula Rasa is toast tho.

wierd, doesn't do that for me - not on windows or linux. sounds like a font size thing.
/. doesn't exactly produce the most compliant html...
however I've never had any problems with the site using firefox.
