As a former government employee, I can attest to the fact that for large amounts of time I was not productively employed. In my case I knew Big Brother was watching so I did not goof off on the Internet. I did goof off in numerous other ways. The fact that the civil servants were goofing off is symptomatic of a bigger problem. A smart manager would realize that the public stewards just have too much time on their hands, and therefore their jobs can be eliminated. In other words the solution is NOT to ban 'viewing of porn during the work day. It is to keep firing the 'civil servants' until they are so overworked (some would say rightly worked) that they just do not have time to look at naked ladies at work.

Consequently the invisible hand of capitalism will guide the best companies to becoming the most profitable, and everyone is happy. Modern media has created the erroneous belief that corporations want a free market economy. This could not be more false. Corporations want monopoly, and a steady stream of money. The definitely do not want to compete. If do not have any moral / political forces e.g. Teddy Roosevelt breaking up trusts, do not exists, the corporations will naturally grow so powerful that the consumers become virtual serfs.
Red blooded USAians (like me) tend to condemn the Bolshevik revolution and spread of communism. However there WAS big reason, for the revolution and the capitalists over there only have themselves to blame. I am afraid that the next person who is put on hold for three hours won't sneak into the house of the companies head honcho, and kill him, I do not want this to happen, but when people have no recourse to the law, it is inevitable. You can only push people so far.
In the past I would argue that the baser instincts of capitalism were periodically checked by 'the moral fiber' of the corporate governors ( and vigilant government) that kept the system from going to hell. This no longer appears to be the case. The notion of providing a 'good service and dealing honorably with customers' has been replace by lets outsource our call center to Indians, and keep the customer on hold for 3 hours.
There are numerous examples showing the our corporate leaders have become no better then common street thugs. My favorite one is Midway airlines collecting $20 million dollars from the taxpayers for NOT running an airline after 9-11. 50 years ago, some CEO / CFO would have said 'no we can not collect money for not doing our job'. Now the corporate culture is 'Hey why not. It's not illegal'
This would be good for people concerned about piracy. Since the U.S. doesn't care about the issue, a prudent boat owner should disguise his boat as one that is already sinking that way bandits don't try and board it to steal all your women and booze.
Come to think about it, it would also be perfect for domestic pirates too. When someone comes to your aid, you could quickly fire your blunderbuss, and trow over all lines. That way you could steal THEIR wine and women. Best of all worlds.

In the situation, the terrorist group destroyed a target of supreme U.S. importance. Our country spent the next 10 years fighting this 'terrorist' group. In the process we virtually bankrupted the country, and eroded all the freedoms that we were supposedly fighting for. In the end it was revealed who the real country controlling the terrorist group was. However at that point the imaginary country in question had just had 10 years of incredible economic and technological expansion. It was literally too strong to fight. The scenario planned to be kind of like the "Kobayashi Maru" scenario in Star Trek 2 the wrath of Kahn, where our little ship puts up a last ditch noble fight in the face of sure death in the hands of overwhelming odds.
However, at the time my superiors decided that my scenario was too unrealistic. Instead we had to keep fighting the imaginary terrorist organization.

This is the result living in a society where food is in abundance. Now if they were to be magically transported to a place where food was scare, and survival is not guaranteed, person B, would quickly starve, and person A, would be getting all the hotties.
The ability to put on kg / pounds / stones while consuming a moderate diet is a survival characteristic that is superfluous in a society of abundance. Some people do fine on a 2000 cal / day diet. Other's need to eat a LOT less if they do not want to balloon up.
Take for example Lynne Cox long distance swimmer that swam all the way to Antarctica. Sure she is a warrior, and IMHO in shape, but, if you saw her picture, you would no doubt label her as a fat ass. On the other hand there are not too many skinny long distance swimmers swimming in Antarctica.

This could never happen today. The cops would be sued for using slave labor to clean the police cars. The only recourse the cops have is the law. They are not allowed to interpret the law. Common sense fails, and lawyers prevail.

If we can harness the best minds of the planet who designed nuclear weapons for war to make nukes for space, that would be the best of worlds.
So far cooler heads have prevailed and kept us out another nuclear war. That gives me some hope for humanity.
