This sounds crazy, but if Microsoft manages to piss off enough users, the chances are more people will wake up to the issue of DRM. For the moment most people seem blissfully unaware of what DRM and what it means. Make listening to music how they want, where they want complicated and you will hear the noise from what used to be people who didn't care.

At the moment trying to explain DRM to the average Joe, without looking like some sort of extremist, ain't easy.

I don't think its just your Mom its going to confuse. This sounds like one of those solutions that is so smart it is stupid. I mean this means additional costs, not really knowing which component failed if something went wrong (so who do you blame) and the extra hasle when it come to dealing with stupid sales people or the kid at your local video store. It also means that it is harder for any one publisher to add an extra layer for their movie.

In short, while an interesting idea, more effort should be made into providing simple solutions, not trying to expound multiple incompatible formats.

Have you done a blind listening test to really see whether this isn't simply psychological? Of course the music must be from the same source, such as one track with the DRM still intact and then the same track with DRM removed - for example something from the iTunes store and then the same track with PlayFair applied. Not using music from the same source just proves that one is ripped at a better quality, but doesn't prove that the DRM is a factor.

  14. Re:it still asked me for a password on Hack Mac OS X With Installer Packages · · Score: 4, Interesting

This reminds of the suggestion that one security advisor provided. I think it was a story some time back here on slashdot.

Basically the guy suggested that the authentication dialog should have a user customisable image (you would customise in control panel). That way when the password entry dialog appears the person would know whether the password request dialog was being provieded by the system, or being faked. The idea is that the is little chance in the rogue program working out the image the user used to authenticate password dialogs.

It also makes us realise that validity of Microsoft providng the facility of signing packages. Although there are chances that you can have a faked certificate, this would help you limit yourself to a party with a valid certificate, if you so choose. The important point is that the certificate is used as an indication, not as a control mechanism.

The truth is though, if you have enough careless users installing random garbage you increase the chances of your system getting 0wned, no matter what the OS. It is the same principal as in the real world where even if you have the best security system, if you have people leaving doors open, covering detectors because they make life inconvenient they are truely worthless.

All DVD drives for computers do this, unless you have a hack. Using players such as VLC or MPlayer will help you get round the issue. Of course this doesn't change the fact that it is a pain in the butt. It is also for reasons such as this that HD-DVD and BluRay do not interest me. For the moment I haven't had much issue with games, but the interesting thing is that the price differential is used as the excuse for region-locking consoles, yet at the same time PC games don't have to put up with this madness.
