  1. Re:The future is asynchronous! on Pentium 4 Overclocked to 7.1GHz, Sets World Record · · Score: 1

I came across another article the other day that indicates that certain aspects of the x86 are already asynchronous. One thing is for certain is that increasing clock speeds can only go so far. The future, IMO, will not only be asynchronous but also multi-core or multi-CPU.

According to one of the two articles in my post it is indicated that the current processors are actually running as fast as their slowest component. With the asynchronous chips, certain components could be ignored if they aren't playing a role in the current processing. Think of asynchronous chips as "Just in Time" processing.

  2. The future is asynchronous! on Pentium 4 Overclocked to 7.1GHz, Sets World Record · · Score: 3, Interesting

Cooling and power requirements aren't the only issue, since at those types of frequencies you are likely to be interfering with radio frequencies, unless you have really good shielding.

The real future is asynchronous CPUs, that are actually clockless. They generate much less heat and consume much less power. The only reason that they aren't replacing the current batch of chips fast, is that all chip design and testing processes are built around clocked CPUs.

That much I understand, but in certain cases there isn't a local distributor to go through. What happens in that case? That's why merchants should be allowed to buy from foreign distributors until a local one becomes available.

  11. Re:How about everywhere next? on iTMS Launches in Japan · · Score: 3, Interesting

The issue is with the record companies. They have issue if you don't buy through the local distributor.

What I would love to see happen is for merchants to be able to be able to import CDs and music for which there is no local distributor. The day a local distributor picks up that music the merchant would be given a time frame to sell their remaining stock, and all future purchases would have to go through the cartel - uh I meant local music distributor ;)

This would allow merchants to provide the selection they want to provide, without being blocked by anyone.

The other conclusion I also came to is that the system will be designed to run in the presence of that chip, but the presence of that chip won't prevent the computer from running anything else. For this reason running Linux, MS-Windows or any other OS on this hardware is still possible.

The real question, given history of security measures being cracked, is how long will it take for someone to break this? Quite honestly I wouldn't look forward to this, since Apple makes money off the hardware and to a certain extent this would probably result in "killing the hand that feeds you" when it comes to the OS.
