One intersting thing to note is that Apple is probably the only computer company offering USB mice and keyboards standard. Sure things are starting to change, but too many manufacturers are still pushing the PS/2 port !?
Firewire already has a user base, albeit not in the low end PC market. Most high speed storage devices and multimedia devices use firewire. Also, now that Intel is going to add IEEE1394 to their mother boards things may change in the low end aswell. Each has their market and it is a question of the hardware manufacturers deciding which technology best fits their application.
What about a 500MB external SCSI HD? I tried my local second hand computer store but they only wanted complete systems. At the moment it is sitting in a box until I can find a better place than the bin - I am not likely to use it again as I don't think buying a SCSI card just to use it is money well spent.
If anyone knows any place in Quebec that is happy to accept old stuff like this then I would love to know.
ImageJ is a Java app that will handle the file without a problem and being in Java it is x-platform. Oh, and the source code is available on the download page.
Another point that should be mentioned is that with faster processors new types of applications become accessible to consumers. Imagine trying to edit your home video on your computer, or trying to do other creative work, on a computer four years ago and it would not have been possible.
The way I see it, is that while games push the envelope, faster processors make new kinds of applications available and the interest in those applications also help people want faster computers.
We all use word-processors and spread-sheets but there also a lot of people who also want to be creative with their computers.
Yep, believe it or not the USA is not the only country with online radio stations. If you don't mind the fact that you don't understand what the DJ is saying, there are plenty of other radio stations streaming over the internet and playing a much different variety of music. If you get bored of one radio station tune in to something from another country.
The gram is a measurment of mass, whereas the Newton is the measurement of force. Mass changes with gravity and something weighing 1 gram here would be significantly less on the Moon. Force, if I remember rightly is universal. Since 99.9999% of Slashdotters live on the planet Earth I would say that it doesn't really matter how much weight I would 'loose' simply by travelling to the moon.

Quicktime In Linux
·
· Score: 1
Don't worry,IE6 lost the QT plug-in but is likely to have gained the QT active-x component.
That is great to hear ( I am being serious ). The only catch is that the most of the QuickTime trailers use Sorenson and I can't see any legal way of getting this working on Linux, unless Apple changes the licensing between them and Sorenson. Maybe its time to encourage the use of a non-Sorenson codec?
True time is money which ever way you see it, unless you are a student with nothing else to do;-)
The one big difference is that if a company goes boom none of the software source is available for people to hack at and let live - it just disappears into the trash-heap of time. In the open source community, while you will have factions that get bored and go onto other things, you will always have someone willing to spend the time improving it, and the code will always be legally available somewhere to be improved upon.
The Mac and Linux are probably the only platforms where a real competitor to MS could afford to release an Office suit. The only problem is that people have got so used the features of Office that it is hard to convince them to use an alternative. I use AppleWorks on a Mac and do miss some of the features of MS-Word - unfortunately it is true:(
As to the Darwin issue, Apple would never consider commercialising it, because if they did they would have to support it and that's not where the want to put their resources.
Perhaps one of the punishments is that all contracts must be made public if so chosen by any signer?
Or it should be that the contracts should be registered with the government and on supicion of monopoly they would be made public, with the help of a warrant.
But then again all new PPC Macs use the New World approach, and all other non-Apple PPC machines make use of OpenFirmware. There is also enough of a support community to get you through the hurdles.
Newbies shouldn't have to worry about x86 specific issues either. You are likely to run into just as many problems with your x86 depending on the hardware in your computer.
Go and get yourself as RISC based processor, at least that way you won't be breaking any of environmentally friendly laws for energy usage.
It seems that with every generation Intel is intent of putting the gas heater companies out of business, while the PPC and ARM guys are trying for the most efficient ( both in processing power and energy consumption ) processors.
The movie is in Quicktime format so unless you have MS-Windows or MacOS your're out of luck.

The New Zelda

If after reading the text you still think a cartoon approach is bad, check out the movie at the bottom of the page. Although not the same feel as the previous version of Zelda it certainly is a novel approach and one that might find a number of imitators.
I think part of the problem in this story is that the guy has an account with 'Time-Warner Cable' who happens to be part of the same company that is an MPAA member. It looks like that there is probably a confidential information flow between the various parts of 'AOL-Time-Warner', hence the reason why it never went through the proper legal channels, ie it was all happening within the same company.
I think the best thing this couple can do is go and find another provider that doesn't have the words AOL, Time or Warner included in its name.
Sure this may not be what is happening, but in this case I am going to play by the same rules and insist the company is guilty until proven innocent.

This is what they mean by convergence.
I can imagine the next California black outs being labelled 'Intel Inside'.

Just tried it out and it works.
Thanks for that correction.

Maybe Apple can take advantage of the GameCube to prove that the processor used in Macs is a processor worth contending with?

- Can you have a beowulf of those things?
- When is Linux going to be running on the GameCube?
Hmm, just imagine the next Big Blue will be a Borg Cluster, er, I mean GameCube cluster.okay my karma is too high, I need to mod myself down a bit
Even better, here is a FAQ, see section 1.11, paragraph 2: http://www.dvddemystified.com/dvdfaq.html

Maybe it was just the IEEE 1394 connector that is prohibited on DVD players.
