The food stocks issue comes from what would be silage feed for animals. In that way you're removing the corn, beet mash, and some other plant sources from the market. It also shaping what variety of corn that is grown. Why grown sweet or pop corn to be sold on a volatile food market? You can grow dent corn for ethanol production and get a guaranteed price from subsidies. Corn by far is the easiest way to generate ethanol but there are other sources that are waste material. Beet mash mentioned above is one of the source. It takes longer to process them because they generally have less carbohydrates to produce this liquid golf. Without the grants and subsidies in the US ethanol would be break-even at best and a losing product at worst for farmers.

Is there a liberal equivalent of talk radio?

Commercially, no. All large scale commercial attempts have failed spectacularly. Air America is the most outstanding attempt that comes to mind. The only national network is NPR. While not specifically liberal, the network tends toward liberal views. Many of NPR's large supporters have a liberal bend so they have a large influence on their programming.

There several independent liberal radio station but they tend be in larger, more affluent cities.

From what I hear a lot of the original systems have been re-engineered to be lighter, more power efficient, and easier to source parts for. But in the process the design, especially main controller, has cut corners. They now have thinner leads on the boards that can't take extreme temperatures or electrical interference caused by extreme loads on straining motors. Also they're taking these units on longer mission in more extreme conditions putting more stress on the machines.
