What if the authors say they are willing to sell allow it to be non-GPL licensed for a million dollars each.

Wouldn't that give the code value then?

What if they said a million a copy?

By your logic I can just use QT without releasing code or paying Trolltech because the code is GPL.

Perhaps if any of the authors says that no amount of money would lead them to allow non-GPL release it would have no value, but I don't think that has been stated.

Those that are generally happy with there life will generally maintain that happiness even if getting paralyzed in a car accident, and those who are miserable will maintain misery even after winning the lotto.

Where is this lack of control in Ubuntu?

I have been using it for a while now and I think I have complete control.

Every remote service that is running I chose, I chose the desktop environment, the kernel optimizations (low latency), the theme, the default text editor.

As someone who has used Linux as a primary desktop for around 30% of the 8 years I would describe myself as a "power user", but not an "expert". With this background Ubuntu is fulfilling the promise that was started (from my perspective) with Redhat and continued with SUSE and Mandrake. I plug in a device, and it pretty much just works. Like Debian I have every package I could possibly want, but unlike debian I am never too far out of date (I understand that unstable is kind of like that now-adays).

Because Debian is a well loved distro and Ubuntu popular, I always can get packages for Ubuntu that are up to date, and not included in the massive selection available to the repositories. I personally feel that .deb files give me more control that compiling from source, because I can easily remove said packages and get everything off. I can also easily get a list of everything installed.

It is apparently really hard to get the right amount of atoms reliably and constantly. This is why mass is still using a reference while time and length have ways to reproduce them in a lab (I believe it is measuring the speed of light, and the waves coming ff some substance that is heated up).

There is some work being done making spheres with a silicone chrystal structure, but the margin of error is a few hundred atoms (molecules?), and they wanted it down to around 50. This was a few years ago, things may have changed.

Steam, HL Etc. work pretty well in Cedega at the very least.

And Enemy Territory is real good too.

I have only Linux and I admit I get huge pangs of game lust when I am at the store (I really want to play Railroads!), but I make do quite well with World of Padman, Enemy Territory, UFO: Alien Intelligence (native). If you include WINE there are a few more games (one player at least), and if you get Cedega (more expensive than Windows), there is a fairly large selection of games to choose from. There are other Quake III mods that are totally free I am yet to play, including Urban Terror, and some aliens vs humans RTS hybrid too. Non cutting-edge FPS is very well represented on Linux.

If Sid Meier wasn't so old school (I get the impression he breaks a lot of (modern?) programming conventions when playing his games), I would probably be very pleased with the overall situation.

Besides, when I turn up the eye candy my Desktop Framerate drops to 15FPS when wobbling the windows (this is actually true, that and the not too-infrequent crashing caused me to dump Beryl). Wobbly windows look terrible without AA too.
