  1. Two things:

    1) where are you seeing that single line option (I'm at $70 for one).
    2) it only throttles you during peak usage, which I think is pretty cool of them (in my one experience, they did indeed not constantly throttle me).

  2. Isn't this a thing already on Netflix CEO Predicts Mobile Operators Will Soon Offer Unlimited Video (phys.org) · · Score: 1

T-Mobile has done this at 1.5mbps for quite a while.

    ATandT does 3mbps

Sprint I think has a similar too.

This seems like a pretty safe assumption, since it's been happening for a while and is currently expanding.

  3. The post state and federal tax is about 8.5k/month (103k).

The 10k was a napkin math that was a little off estimate of post taxes.

  4. Sales tax that is pretty universal to everybody budgeting.

In CA, it doesn't apply to food or utilities, and rent (?), doesn't apply to savings or other taxes, it does appear to apply to clothes shop though, some people don't need to worry about that.

Pretending the effective tax rate of sales tax is anything approaching the nominal rate is pretty dishonest.

Just like pretending struggling to cover a month with a 160k/year salary is a failure of basic home economics.

It's not unlimited money or anything, but it certainly is enough to live comfortable and have money for a rainy month.

  5. Yes, you listed all of the nice things you're able to afford.

Also, I suspect you're not crying poor like the focus of this article.

  6. I live pretty well too, and could easily weather a couple months without pay, especially if it was simply a pay date change and no missed income.

I have a line of credit that could cover that and cost me nothing, because I could pay it before interest accrued.

But that's because I've been responsible(ish not even that responsible) with money, rather than live paycheck to paycheck.

I make about median income in a median cost of living area, it's, I have less disposable income than someone making 160k/year in that area, especially if they're getting away with 3k for rent (which actually seems super low for a two bedroom there).

  7. No, I consider budgeting for healthcare and budgeting for retirement part of living.

They can be skipped here and there.

I'm an adult that figured out how to live and budget my money.

I do it somewhere cheaper than San Francisco, but I do it with a whole lot less than a 100k/year after taxes. Including budgeting for retirement with the same annual income as I have now inflation protected.

If I lived in San Francisco, I could budget less as a percent, and plan on moving somewhere cheaper at 60-65.

  8. I can't find anywhere that says CA has an effective tax rate of 50%.

At at glance, without deductions, I see

    9 (CA income)
    6 (FICA)
    27 (Federal income tax)

I get 42% there, I'm assuming that's high as it ignores all deductions (though it may leave some things out).

the calculator I used had a 103k takehome, so less than I estimated, but still well over 6.5k.

Did you mean 12, or did they buy a new band and I need another new phone?

I just got one that covers 2/4/12

  10. I get 9 at this site (I double checked because an effective tax rate of 50% seemed high).

I assume there's a sales tax too though that knocks that 9 down some depending what type of thing you buy (if it's one that has exceptions).

  11. it's almost like I took 160k and turned it into 120k after taxes, then used the words "takes home" which colloquially means money after taxes.

    I was wondering this too.

    160k, takes home about 10k/month.

after rent that leaves 7k for all other expenses? Unless everything else scales incredibly high (higher than the rent, which I doubt), that's a pretty comfortable life, even with some student debt.

  13. It was an attempt at humor, because there's the crazy hosts file guy.

  14. Are you sure?

My screen is only 2.5k, but when I fill my field of vision with it, it's pretty easy to see the pixels on diagonals, and tests with 1 pixel offsets are even easier.

  15. Shouldn't you use the hosts file?

I'm pretty sure I read that here.

One can eat healthy for $50/person/week.

Rice, beans, eggs, and veggies, variations there of. Some chicken and pork in the mix.

It gives a pretty good variety of dishes available (stir fry, rice dishes, chili, hummus, falafel, scrambles of various types).

Add cheese and sauce, and you can do pasta dishes or pizza.

That's just cooking for myself without any economy of scale cooking in bulk.

I'm not saying it's the most interesting diet, but it's more variety and far healthier than ramen and bologna.

I stopped pirating about 5 years or so ago.

It's partially ethical, but also convenience.

I pirated when there wasn't really a good way to watch what I wanted, but now, the couple minutes it takes to find a good file, and the ten or so to download it just isn't worth it when there's likely something just as good on a streaming service, or barring that, youtube (though my go to their has been pirated tales from the crypt, which I assume will be taken down with the reboot coming).

  19. Re:Quality over Quantity on Can Streaming Companies Replace Hollywood Studios? (vanityfair.com) · · Score: 1

I really expected digital distribution to lead to a lot more variety at cinemas, but it seems to have actually lead to quicker churn as the new blockbuster is able to be shown in six theaters for the first two weeks, displacing more films than it would have under normal situations.

I suppose I should have predicted this after the long-tail was shown to not really play out on the internet as a whole.

I still think there's money to be made for an innovative theater chain that really looks at what's available and does some one-off showings of more obscure content. Now that one doesn't need to deal with the expense of transporting film, and setting it up, it should make such a thing much more possible.

  20. My last car was 11 years old, 180k miles.

Mechanically pretty well, my fat ass had the driver's seat shot though.

I traded it in when a speed bump blew the side airbag, otherwise, I bet it had a lot of life left in it.

My BLU Studio Energy 2 wasn't particularly huge (though a touch heavy), had a 5000 mah battery and lasted for quite a bit.

I got 24 hours of on battery (at 18% left still) with 8.5 hours of screen on time.

It also had a pigtail for USB otg charging, I could revive someone else's phone and still get a solid day of regular heavy use.

On most phones the screen is the highest consuming part, and there's limits to how much that can be reduced (in the end, brightness is energy).

I think you misjudge how big/small a battery is needed to reach this goal, the makers simply don't seem to care, and only do the big batteries on the phablet sized phone.

  22. Especially since it includes maintenance, a car typically dies when it's not worth maintaining.
