Enterprise would be so much better if Archer had half a clue.
Not to mention that episode where 'Trip' and that alien where stuck on a moon that was about to get extremly hot. They couldn't send a shuttle (atmosphere problem) or transport the alien up (would kill him) so Trip decides he'd stay until the aliens got there shuttle working. (Oh, and he figured out how to modify the aliens ship to travel in the atmosphere of the moon - this guy's a genious!)
So the tranporters are working. Trip and an alien are still on this planet, baking in the heat without water and that other stuff the alien needs.
C'mon Captain!! Use your brain! You can transport stuff down you know! A little water maybe?? How about some shelter !!! Sheesh!! Not to mention Trip and the alien decide to sit on a big hill on the side facing the extremly hot sun!! Did I say he was a genious? Oops...
Didn't get a chance to see the pictures, server is slashdotted. So I did a quick googling around and found a nice site that shows the history of the AmigaOS. http://www.gregdonner.org/workbench/index.html
I had forgot just how nasty Workbench 1.x's colours where. Makes XP look friendly *g*
Think about it. The vasy majority of people who use Ogg Vorbis, encode it from CD. Encoding one from MP3 or other format is just stupid!
So, if they have the CD's then it's a good bet they also own it. And there ain't *nothing* illegal about ripping your own CD's for your own use! So there.
Mp3 is for people who want music, Ogg Vorbis is for people who want quality!
(Or Ogg FLAC if you've got a boatload of disk space)
Hehe..If you're CPU is really running 266Mhz (I'm not gonna pick on your millihertz this time), you'll discover a whole new world with a BUS running faster than your old computer.. All I'm saying is put those old boxes with a nice FreeBSD installed to the closet and use them for screen/IRC-client! Imagine the uptime..
lol, dang it I didn't think anyone had noticed:p
I have an old 25mhz machine running in the attic, uptime so far is 658 days and counting. Not that it does much these days, I just can't stand to shut it down with that uptime;)
The machine I was talking about however is a tiny bit faster Athlon XP 2000.
Very similar, only on a credit-card shaped CD. Tho I'm sure you could do the same with Knopper - except finding CD-R's that shape is a pain in the butt here.
Does somebody actually pay money for Red Hat. I thought everybody downloaded for free from their web site.
We do both!
Normally download the.0 or.1 releases, and buying the boxed.2 (normally stable) version. You get a lot more CD's with it plus a really handy 'survival CD' that contains some very useful tools if your having a non-boot day;)
Oh, and my computer now has a nice "Powered by RedHat" sticker now! Worth the price alone!
A little more recent: Cassini took it's first picture of Saturn! It is 285 million km from the planet, and if it can get images that good then I can't wait to see what it returns when it gets there!
(My best attempt at taking a picture of Saturn is here - hmpf... )
Kryten: I suggest switching from blue alert to red alert.
Cat: Forget red alert, let go up all the way to brown alert!
Kryten: There's no such thing as brown alert.
Cat: You won't be saying that in a minute. Just don't say I didn't alert you!
I continue to get this "Is this all?" feeling every time I use it.
In a way that's a good thing. GNOME is trying to be a desktop environment, nice and simple. Let the add-on's do the rest. This stops bloat, keeps things fast and stable. (Well, kinda stable:)
I do miss a lot of things from the previous GNOME but the things people really miss will come back! That's the best things about open source! If it matters, it will be done.
Hopefully!
Coolies! You learn something new every day!

Will my 300MHz Linux box be able to compress my voice in real-ish time?
Most definitly. You could probably manage a few streams at the same time on that box.
Enterprise would be so much better if Archer had half a clue.

Needless to say, I no longer watch Enterprise

Does anyone else find the underline below every mention of HP in the press release annoying.
Oh, just me:)

I'm sure their shelf-life is around 200 years. :-)
No kidding, they'd probably out-last the shelf!

Just how much influence does the bus speed have on the system as a whole?
My CPU is running at 266mhz now, what improvment would I see if I upgraded to a 333mhz bus chip with the same clock speed?
Just curious!
Not only that, but both processors are at about the same price.
.. never thought I would say that!
Not to mention the AMD runs cooler than the Intel chip.
Whoa
What, like this?

I'm sick of this karma whoring going on at slashdot recently.
.. no sudden mouse clicks ...
Please step away from the computer Sir!
Slowly
Now, go outside! Enjoy yourself! Get some fresh air! It'll do you the world of good!
There is no reason left but MSIE to use GIFs.
Maybe Unisys asked them not to. </Conspiracy Theory>
They do seem to be very chummy!

Imagine a Beowulf school of these!

On the other hand, bad weather, or anything that might block the light's path, can cause slowdowns or power failures.

Power failures?! Just how powerful is this thing!! Somehow I don't think a flock of seagulls will have any impact.
Well except maybe with the ground.
I'd hate to be the guy who has to cleanup after that
My question is, why offer what is already a seriously compressed file within another set of, practically useless, compression?

Or even better, does it have those evil 'finger pad' mouse things.
I much prefer the older laptop's that had the trackerball. Much easier to control and they didn't go crazy if you pressed to hard.
The barebone notebook features no display, no CPU, no RAM and no HDD, but only the case, with keyboard and touchpad.
:)
Only on Slashdot would these be considered features.
In saying that I think it's a great idea! All my desktop machines are custom built, would be a shame to have to get a branded laptop now!
