I'd hate to be part of the team that looks at the source code. Those people would never be able to work on open source code again without being accused of 'stealing'.
A lot of companys don't like scripted languages because the source is required to run the code. For small companys like the one I work for this isn't a problem, but larger companys that may spend a lot of money developing there programs may feel better if they only have to distribute binaries.
No doubt that scripting is a better choice from a programming point of view for many of these types of systems, but often it's not the programmers making the choices;)
Some of the interactive services are a bit naff, but some are pretty interesting.
One of my personal hates about the system is those incredibly annoying red dots or 'press red' logos they put everywhere. I expected it from Sky, but I am really disappointed to see the BBC reach such low levels also.
I don't care about them putting up those logos during the adverts, I don't watch the adverts anyway. But to plaster them all over the programs people watch is just wrong.
I just setup IPv6 last night on my main box after reading the previous article. I was able to ping and irc, tho I didn't think Mozilla supported IPv6. Guess I was wrong:)
Tis very cool! Everyone give it a go! If all those who read Slashdot got onto the IPv6 network then that would be a huge boost! And we need IPv6 to be successful!
Oh, and Slashdot should consider setting up ipv6.slashdot.org - it's not that difficult!
with higher quality audio/video and better compression
It's a shame Sky use such a horribly low bitrate that it probably wouldn't make much difference. A properly setup analogue system used to be much better.
they're a little older @ 2000 so they may be safe from this, how far back does this go...the article mentioned that problems started showing in 2001
Good question. I don't remember exactly when I built that machine. The 800Mhz Pentium III was fairly new when I got it, and 'orribly expensive. I'd guess it was 2001.
I also remember being annoyed at these new 1Ghz CPU's that made my machine obsolete:)
4000 hours for the good capacitors? That's like 6 months of continuous usage.
They got maths lessions from the RIAA?
"These motherboards are obviously being sold for use in music piracy. Why else would they put onboard audio on it? These 'secured' capacators are designed to protect our prof^H^H^H^H.. artists from these thiefs."
How is being asked to hand over your key, any different to being asked to open your safe on production of a warrant ?
The trouble is even if data was completly random, and they ask for the key (which you can't obviously give them, or prove the data is random) then your a criminal.
It's guilty until proven innocent, which is wrong.
It's also interesting to note that ATi's drivers seem to behave better than nVidia's... now that's something I didn't think I'd hear myself saying 12 months ago.
Tell me about it! ATi used to have nasty drivers, and not all that impressive hardware.
I used to laugh at people with ATi cards...
Now I'm considering being one of those people!:)

Can understand both sides!
Give this a go: about:mozilla
:)
Anyone know any more of these 'features'?
No-one can be told what the Earth Simulator is. You have to see it for yourself.
the news in the states is reading more and more like a comicbook everyday
Tell me about it! Sky in the UK have recently started carrying a new comedy channel called 'Fox News'.
At least I think it's comedy. There sure ain't any news on it.
We have an old Pentium 133 here setup as the ISDN router. Works perfectly! Also got a DHCP and DNS-cache on it.
Heck, a 486 could do all that!
draw an 'N' and netscape pops up
People still use Netscape on Linux??
Arh the Horror!

I was traveling south a few months ago, and in Luton I saw this.

Had to take a picture
Image quality is rubbish, cheap camera.
and would like to remind all employees that reading /. at work is stealing and might be a violation of the DMCA!
/. staff? Hey that might explain a lot ... :)
Does that include

When they are younger, it's easier to mold their minds.
... I read that as 'easier to motd there minds.'
Erk
I think it's time I took a break from IRC...
Don't click on link, or you'll remove your eyes with a spoon! Anybody knows why this is still moderated at 4?
....
There is no spoon

I am just curious if the Asus or Abit motherboards that I own might be affected ??
All the failed capacators seem to be from the company JPCON. On my motherboard (that also failed) they are branded JACKCON.
So if you board has these capacators, I'd keep an eye on them.

My older ABit board suffered the same fate a few days ago. I took a pic here.
I've got replacment capacators here now, gonna attempt a repair later today. I've never tried to fix a motherboard before, so should be fun!

Ack, I keep getting that URL wrong. Shame that some company is camping on that address.
Here's the proper address: http://flac.sourceforge.net/
.shn files which are a type of lossless audio
Of course it would be nice to re-encode these to FLAC files.
A nice open and free format!
Can somebody tell me why I'd need a higher numbers of hertz?
:)
Well with the AMD 2000XP you get the added benefit that your computer can heat up your entire room.
You think I'm kidding?

Do English-speaking people receive spam in foreign languages?
In my @rocketmail.com account, every item of spam is Taiwanese.
But that's only one account. All my others get flooded with English spam.
Bah, Demon are rubbish tonight.
The site is here for a few hours.
