yes weight is more important than size here. Also price -- show me a powerbook g4 for $350!! Of course the original eMate was $800.... The other factor that is important (to me) is the plastic case. I have dropped eMate on concrete with no damage other than cosmetic. I wouldn't try that with a powerbook g4 even though I know it could probably take some abuse.

That's the wrong kind of "bump." A "bump" of speed is a small amount of speed snorted off a key, a rolled up dollar bill, a small spoon, or even a fingernail. "Bumps" are a good way to extend the party without having to go in the nasty back room with all the tweakers huddled over the coffee table.

Bring back the eMate plastic clamshell casing, stick a G4 in it, and sell it for $350. I love the eMate, but I can't figure out any way to get the information I type on it into my Mac. So it collects dust these days.... The form factor is perfect. Sure, they can make it white instead of ugly dark green (personally I like the green), but if Apple comes out with something of that form factor at a reasonable price, I will buy 2 of them!!

hehe... yeah they were right about it violating the HIGs, but Apple showed that usability was more important all along and that the HIGs were just an avenue to reach that goal. Which is exactly as it should be.

I have to say, though, I still use Camino (Chimera then) over Safari, but more because I've just gotten used to its quirks than anything else.

Well, that does point to possible dangers of a completely antiseptic environment and of excessive use of antibiotic agents, but we started this conversation about cleaning your cutting board after using it to cut raw meat. (And I recommeded using white vinegar rather than heavy chemicals, which this article seems mostly to assume). Again, if you don't mind a little rancid ox blood or week-old mackerel organs in your fruit smoothie, more power to you, but I'm going to go ahead and keep cleaning my cutting board after each use.

(Note that the HIG is not always 100% accurate .. there are places where you should deviate from it slightly in order to match what Apple's apps do.)

An important example of such deviation is Apple's use of tabbed browsing in Safari. And now I'd like to take this opportunity to remind slashdotters that tabbed browsing was something I predicted years ago, but was slapped down by others who said that tabs would never happen in Safari because they violated Apple's HIGs. I was modded down for my premonition, but I would like to point out that I was right all along! Now give me my mod points!!

According to this page, the science is a little more confused than you portray it. Apparently bacteria go under the surface of wood and stay dormant, whereas on plastic they can't get below the surface. This means for plastic what bacteria are there are ready to attack the next item you chop, but they are also easier to clean off. Until, of course, you have scratched up the surface of your cutting board with a knife, giving them more surfaces to hide, harder to clean, etc. The studies for wood vs. plastic seem to have gone both ways. But the main lesson is, of course, keep your cutting surface clean, especially if you handle raw meat of any kind. Wash with soapy water ASAP after use, and then disinfect it with a tablespoon full of white vinegar (or use some nasty chemical if you prefer). Better also is to use different boards for "high risk" products and to buy new ones when the old ones wear out. But remember, if you don't clean it, it's not going to matter whether you use wood or plastic!
