I don't know, I'm pretty sure talking about toggle switches on a date would be a pretty big turn off. I don't understand. If she's turned off wouldn't you just toggle the switch?
maybe you should try figuring out what drives you to do it in the first place. As long as you're only harming yourself, I don't really care what you do, but I'd still prefer to have you NOT harming yourself. Uhhh, dude. I'm writing. Words. In a book. Why the fuck would you call that "harming yourself"?
I suppose it's also a bit condescending to say to a guy standing on a ledge "don't do it, you have plenty to live for". What would you say instead, in order to avoid sounding condescending? Are you serious? In order to not sound condescending, how about not comparing writing poetry to jumping off a fucking ledge, for starters.
Didn't you see First Contact? Yeah but it got marked "troll" by the mods.

If they have the ability to visit us, then the far more likely scenario is that they will exploit/conquer us. You just have to look at our own history of contact between various cultures to figure that out. What makes you think that if we find an intelligent species out there, that they will be as stupid as we are?
Blame the media. I mean what the hell - he says "Don't blame the movies I see, the music I hear, the games I play or the books I read. No, they had nothing to do with this. This is my war"... then he has a list of the movies he sees, the music he listens to, the games he plays and the books he reads. Of course he's giving the media something to talk about -- as is any modern day school shooter or mass murderer.
In short, just because something feels good, doesn't mean it's going to have a positive effect on your life, or that it's in any way beneficial. Where did she say it "feels good" to write about it or even that it's beneficial? I've written some pretty dark shit myself and I don't do it because it "feels good" or because I think it will make me better; in fact, I don't make a conscious decision about whether I'm going to write that sort of stuff; I just do. Sometimes it's the only way to deal with certain feelings -- not to feel better as a result, but just to feel, or to better understand what you feel. Maybe I wind up a better person after writing it, maybe not -- all I can say is I never do a cost benefit analysis before choosing to write something. And it's a little condescending to tell someone not to "brood" on their experiences or "descend into a fantasy world" just because they admit to writing things you might not find comfortable to read.
did they make more or less profit than what they would have made with the standard sales method? The thing is, Radiohead isn't done making money off this record. They still plan to release it as a regular CD, in stores, with regular record company promotion. The Financial Times went so far as to call the whole scheme "a promotional tactic to boost sales of CDs." I like what they're doing here, but I think slashdot is completely exaggerating how revolutionary this is -- here is a well known band that is going to make money no matter what, and they're putting this online tip jar out there ultimately to promote the sale of more of their traditional market CDs. If you want something a bit more radical check out Niggy Tardust, the collaboration between Saul Williams and Trent Reznor. Download 128 kbps mp3 for free, or pay 5 bucks to download 320 kbps quality. No tip jar encouraging people to give more than that, no record company, and no physical CD. That may not be the best model either, but these guys are taking a much bigger risk than Radiohead.
The story about how he got that nice enclosure is amazing too (see here) -- some guy in England read his site, thought it was a cool project, and made one and sent it to him. Pretty amazing if you ask me.
Nobody is giving them a "right to escape." In fact, if they try it, guards are likely to shoot and kill them. And they will be pursued and thrown right back in jail to finish their sentence as soon as they are caught. They are simply not punished *additionally* for trying to escape. Stop trying to twist things around.
No, they're not oblivious to that at all; that's why they put them there in the first place, and that's why they try to catch them when they escape, and put them back there. And that's why they will prosecute them for any other crimes they commit while escaping. Your claim that they are not concerned about public safety is circular.
The debate worth having, as always, is how "we" get the people who download music and don't pay for it to become paying customers. The answer to that is relatively simple; Radiohead figured it out, and so did Saul Williams and Trent Reznor. Put your music online and ask people for money. The Niggy Tardust record is a great model, I think -- download 128 kbps mp3s for free or buy a 320 kbps download of the entire record for five bucks. I sent my five bucks in a week before the record came out and I've been blasting it since it came out on thursday. iTMS and emusic and beatport have shown there are other ways to do this as well. Of course, none of this stops "piracy," but you're just not going to stop that. The real question is, can artists still be compensated and even make livings from their work while so-called piracy continues? I think the answer is clearly "yes."
If you read the link, you'll find that there's much more to it. Such as what? I read the link, and it seems pretty clear -- escaping itself is not a crime, and the accused is both permitted and expected to try. Of course, guards can shoot them in the process, and they are not pardoned for any crimes they commit in the process. But if they figure out how to escape without breaking any laws, they will not have any additional time tacked on to their sentences simply for trying to escape. They will eventually be caught in most cases, and will be forced to finish out their sentences. It has absolutely nothing to do with pardoning rapists or whatever.
Truth is a defense to a defamation claim in the U.S. so if they are actually homosexual then there would be no defamation claim because the statements were true. But the related torts of invasion of privacy and intentional infliction of emotional distress would be the basis of a lawsuit if that were the case. Outing someone who didn't want to be outed is likely to be actionable under US law (and probably french too; the problem with the case here was who was responsible, not the outing itself).
"We applaud Apple for the exciting licensing changes"
Is it just me? But I hardly find a license change exciting, not even the the slightest bit. They should really send the PR person who wrote this to a shrink or a psychiatrist. Is it just me? How hard is it to say if [ "$(sw_vers -productVersion | sed -E 's/([0-9]+\.[0-9]+)\..*/\1/')" != "10.4" ] ; then syslog -s "unknown OS version." ; exit 0; fi? Speak for yourself... I'm still stuck on how to pronounce "sw-vers"...

This was pointed out on a previous slashdot article and this poster claims it is not true.
