First off, we aren't talking about poorly written HTML. I've written WAP and done enough with the "old school" browsers to appreciate the need for strict HTML. Yes, IE5 is way too forgiving (I don't even have to close a fricken table tag), but it also WORKS with most of the latest w3c specs. I've found Mozilla's support more on paper, then I have in real life. Gecko, Galeon, etc... crashes, incompatibilities, I love hearing my Linux friends at work swear up a storm everytime they try to visit a website - sometimes even their own fricken code!
W3C code is not inherintly backward compatible in many ways. For example, if I have a dynamic pulldown menu, it will _NOT_ display right AT ALL on Netscape 3 to the point where one has to force the user to an upgrade screen because the user experience would be more damaging then not.
Oh well, all of this arguing is moot. I know that the vast, vast majority of users love my sites, their enhanced UI, and enhanced functionality. The rest are stuck with "be compatible with my lynx" illogical holy wars. Not my cup of tea...
I think you're exagerating the issue. I'm not talking about poorly written HTML, I'm talking about a site that does work, and that DOES enhance the web experience. It does so by using an advanced UI and other features... unfortunatly your non w3c compliant browser doesn't support it... my customers love the site, because their browser works, and they aren't involved with OS, anti-M$ holy wars.
My site works just fine for those who are not overly paranoid or go out of their way to be different for the sake of less compatibility. I don't use heavy JS, and JS isn't necessary, but common, I thought technology was about advancement. And what, is Microsoft.com trying to see if I have linux on my HD or are they just trying to create some nice dynamic pulldown menues (which legitimatly enhance UI).
On the flip side, I do understand your point with http authentication, and agree 100%. The problem is, for sites like this (slashdot), it makes more sense to use cookies since it is much more convenient for the user and is only being set up for user customization, not to secure sensative data like a bank, webmail, "e-tailer" should.
Doesn't the W3C release standards to promote this effect?
Yes, but the problem is, there is no good browser for Linux that follows these standards. Us web developers would like to use some features to enhance UI and the overall web experience. Technology changes, and we don't have time to code backward compatibility for a fraction of our customers. We target the 98%, not the 2% who use a platform without a W3C compliant browser.
What happens if I code a browser and it's not compatible. Should you code your site for _MY_ browser that only _I_ use? Then I say, "I should have a choice!". Well, I do have a choice, I choose to use a browser that's not compatible with your services... that's my problem. So, where does one draw the line?
Part of technology is rapid change, and unfortunatly Linux hasn't had good luck keeping up in the web browser category.
My sites require javascript and cookies. They are not poop thank you very much. And no, I can't track your existance with a cookie, or h4x0r j00r r00tz with javascript. If you want 100% security and privacy, don't use technology that networks you with other people.
Let's find a balance here people.

Actually, it's determined by the electoral college, which is influenced by voting, to a point. I might also add that the presidency is the most affected by votes... but it still comes down to money - many votes are bought.
This is making the assumption that voting makes a _REAL_ difference.
Sure, we should feel privilaged that we can vote, unlike other countries that are in a dictatorship. However, this applied many years ago, when voting mattered. Now, it's all about who's got the most money. Special interests, lobbyists, you name it - there are many legal forms of "buying off" politicians.
Some real world examples: Here in WA state, we voted NO for a 3rd runway at seaTac airport. For some reason, the port of Seattle (who's got tons of $$$) is being allowed to build a 3rd runway. I'm glad that I "participated" and voted - what an impact myself and all the other voters made.
Even if your vote helps bring in your congressmen, senator, etc. of choice, I'll bet that politician's actions will be controlled by the money makers, not you. Don't kid yourself, if you aren't a millionaire contributing to political causes, you aren't making much of a difference, if any at all.
I'd like to add that Intel never actually intended on releasing the P4 this year, they just wanted to create hype. They new all along that it would be Q2 or Q3 of 2001 before they can make enough chips for systems other than those from Dell. This is their way of "staying ahead of AMD".
While Intel announces new products, AMD releases them.

All of the gameplay fixes (e.g. splash bug, dropped sounds) in this release were originally done BY the mod community and sent back to id. We're talking line-by-line comparisons here, for the most part, as we've all made extensive changes and additions to the 1.17 code.
You know it's sad when our greatest developers don't even understand the fact CVS will simply MERGE the conflicting files between the MOD's source and ID's new source. Obviously, ID'd programming god's understand this, and felt that there was no reason to give a heads up.;)
The bands like Offspring, who have platinum sales (and thus sell enough to recieve royalties) are the ones with something to lose by giving the recordings away.
However, Offspring announced that it will digitally distribute their album for _FREE_ on the Internet one month before the CD comes out! They claim that it will only help their sales.

There is a difference between "dumbing down" a product, and making a product more usable. A product that a fool can use has all functionality striped out, and is so dumbed down that it takes 3 times longer to accomplish a simple task (thanks to "wizards" and the like).
It seems to me that whenever a company goes public, starts making money, or makes things easier for the user,/. reacts against it. I personally like Redhat - and I don't care if they are the biggest - I just like the distribution! Now, I've heard good things about Mandrake, so I plan on setting up a box to try it out soon. The point is, use the distribution that works for you, and remember, there's nothing wrong with:

I agree with what you are saying in regards to crtitical Computer Science education for low-level programming positions. But when doing web-based work, one is working at such a high layer of abstraction that the focus is much different.
And what's wrong with a 'teach yourself perl' book? Orielly has some great books that have taught me a lot about a very wide variety of technologies. Books are a very legitimate form of education - sometimes much more then being taught by a prof's AID (and a lot cheaper).
I would like to think that my abilities are well beyond that of a "geek". With my "web millions", I have built my own recording studio for music composition and video production. Do I have to go to school to learn how to compose music??? How robotic! Some of the best composers (with or without college degrees) purposely stay away from music courses as to not fall into a "rut of regurgitation(sp? shoulda gone to college...)".
Then what the hell was Elementary, Junior High, and High School for?? I think that skill-specific learning should start in High School with _LESS_ "well rounding". How well rounded do we need to be before we are "well rounded enough"?
As the saying goes, "If you're too well rounded then you aren't very sharp".
We run thousands of sites off of one IP and tested Netscape 2.0 (1% of our users) and have had no problems.
SSL is no problem because we setup a central secure site for everyone. For example:
https://secure.[hostingcompany].com/[customer]
Now you've just used 2 IPs to run your entire web service. Then you've got your PIX, your 3600's, mail servers etc. and you don't even need a full class C!
Our company bought a couple of Frame Relay T1's that where cheaper than Point to Point T1's. The reason they where cheaper is that we weren't Garunteed 1.5Mb, because it whent through a shared pool of other connections. We then wanted garunteed bandwidth, and ordered 2 Point to Point T1's instead.
This is the same concept as consumer broadband. It is completley ludicrous to think that every home user should have a dedicated 1.5Megabit connection to their home. What's cool about consumer broadband, is because of their overselling of bandwidth, we can all "share" a larger pool of bandwidth for a very reasonable price. There are some ISPs who may unfairly oversell the bandwidth, true, but I've known many to have very good speed for their connections especially when considering the relatively VERY low monthly fees for the service.
Or for the web, ASP... it's one thing to develop for an OS, but to use BASIC to do everything can make one go crazy - and it's definatly NOT worth the dollar. (Well, Perl coders get more $$$ but that's not the point).
Agreed - this unit seems absolutly incredible. My only complaint is that although it has two USB ports, it doesn't support external media like USB Zip 250 for media storage. I've emailed thinkNic about this and they say they may consider Zip drivers in their next OS release. And of course there's the possibility of burning our own package to CD with;).
I agree. Firingsquads use of tables is quite intelligent and lowers download speeds due to less graphics. Yes, it's more work for your browser, but a decent browser shouldn't have a problem rendering such. My PII350 on a 56K modem renders the site very quickly using IE 5.x... I'm no Microsoft fan by any means but the facts are the facts (and yes, they do hurt):(
My question is, since it's got USB, can I not expand the storage to use it to store my own data with say a Zip 250? IMHO it would have been smart to include drivers of popular USB storage devices so that one can download their own APPS.
Your point is well taken. Nevertheless, evolution essentially states that all species on earth came from something, but it doesn't explicitly state what the something is (very well).
