But what if we collect so much solar radiation that it affects global climate? If that radiation is no longer heating the surface of the earth but instead being converted to electricity won't that have an effect on the climate?

I doubt there's any one solution. The solution is to have a variety of energy sources. Man doesn't exist on Coca Cola alone (ok, some do but they aren't doing very well).

I keep my main configuration files (e.g. .bashrc, .emacs) in a subsversion repository. When I get on a new machine I checkout the "my-etc" project that contains those files. I have a Makefile with a target "links" which automatically creates sym-links and makes backups of the original files. It has worked well for me for quite some time now. It gives me the freedom of making config changes and easily importing those changes (svn up) on other machines.

I'll second that. I've been using ev1 for more than a year now and I've been completely satisfied. The prices are reasonable, the hardware is rock-solid stable, the network is fast, and the tech support is competent. My plan with ev1 includes remote access to the serial port. I've been lazy and finally got around to setting up serial console support but I couldn't access it. I sent ev1 some technical data and they resolved the problem relatively quickly (it was on their end) without questioning the data I provided to them.

  6. Surcredits on DSL Surcharge Plan Abandoned by Major Carriers · · Score: 2, Interesting

I'm tired of companies that offer a contract with a set price only to change the price arbitrarily with "surcharges." The odds are completely in the companies favor. They have a customer locked into a mult-year contract with a certain minimum price but the company can raise prices on a whim with "surcharges." If they can do that why can't I add in my own "surcredits?"

I recently dropped my garbage collection company because of surcharges. I've really respect companies that charge me ONE price per month with no lengthy contract (Time Warner is the ONLY example I can think of). I really don't care what factors into some companies cost of doing business. I don't care how much gas costs Waste Management and I don't want to see it on my bill.

  20. 3 Months and port isn't complete on Cellphone Number Portability -- A Big Lie? · · Score: 3, Informative

I've been trying since December 6th 2003 to port my landline number to a verizon phone (bought on December 6th). We were told it would take 3-4 days to port the number. I expected 2 weeks.

So far it's been 3 months and I've made more than 25 phone calls to Verizon - and still the number is not ported. To make matters even better the landline carrier, Frontier Telephone of Rochester disconnected my number today. I immediately called Verizon (yes, Verizon) about this. They tried to get a conference call to Frontier but Frontier was closed for the day.

Can someone please tell me what to do? I filed a complaint with the FCC a week or two ago. I tried contacted a local TV news source but they didn't want to help me (or couldn't). I also left a message with the NYS attorney general tonight. I really don't know who to contact.

I switched to Verizon because I was unhappy with Frontier and it wouldn't cost much more to use Verizon and have 2 phones with many more features than my landline carrier. Instead I'm faced with 3 months of phone calls to Verizon and Frontier and both companies pointing the finger at each other (and me wanting to point the finger at both).

Verizons customer support has been very friendly and seemingly helpful but the fact of the matter is that after 25 calls and 3 months time the number still isn't ported.

When I call Frontier they promptly tell me that I should be dealing with Verizon - not them. Their reps are typically very rude. A while back I was lucky enough to get a nice rep who put me in touch with her supervisor. Her supervisor was nice and contacted their porting department (which I can't contact). He said their porting department wouldn't tell him why, but that Verizon wasn't giving them the information they needed to port the number.

To the best of my knowledge Verizon has sent at least 4 port requests. 3 have been ignored and one was denied.

I almost forgot! We were never offered a temp number for the wireless phone so we can only make outgoing calls on it. This has been a major hassle.

Sorry about the rambling nature of this post but I am extremely upset...
