I think this only goes to show how much the project has matured over the years. The first release of any new software will normally be riddled with bugs and lacking in features. There's an immense amount of work to be done, and major improvements can come about rapidly. As the software improves, however, there's less to be done, so it takes a while before enough changes can be made to warrant a new release. Ideally, a program would be so refined that a new release wouldn't be needed, ever.

It does for him everything he needs it to do, far better than the 333 celeron he had before. It runs Windows XP, and when he clicks on a video file, it plays. When he tries to run a java app, it works. Imagine that. Everything works, and I didn't have to spend ten hours configuring hacked plugins for Xine/Quicktime, RealPlayer, j2re, etc. If he has a problem with it, I'll fix it. And it'll take me far less of my time to fix whatever problems he'd encounter than it would have for me to build, configure, and support a box myself. I'll also call tech support to report whatever problem he had, and chances are, it'll be fixed next time around. We shouldn't work to make non geeks more geeky, we should just be there to help them out when they run into the ocasional issue where a geek is needed to take care of it.

Customers of mine have been hesitant to try Linux. Many still see it as bleeding edge technology, and have developed a 'wait and see' attitude. With the free release of RedHat 9, I've been able to incorporate LAMP systems for small projects, at an incredible price. The stability, reliability, and security of those systems has helped to prove the overall impression of Linux, and in some cases lead to Enterprise Licensing for larger systems. With Fedora being primarily a testing release, without the stability we've come to expect from RedHat, how can I convince customers RedHat is a valid choice?

It isn't. I ran into the same problems with Flash and resolving dependencies from the CDROM. The menus and taskbar paused and came up jerky, and the overall distro seemed far from polished. I respect that the author spent enough time with it to discover even more problems. I gave up far earlier. I loved Red Hat 9. I swore by it. Now, for the first time since I started using Linux, I find myself looking at what's the best distro for me. I'm disappointed that by saying "we're focusing on the enterprise" they really meant "we're abandoning our current user base". I hate to say it, but on the projects I work on in the future, I think I'll be abandoning Red Hat. Can't wait to see what Novell/Suse will come up with together.
