America's infrastructure is under attack-- but it isn't an organized attack. Admittedly, some hackers have government ties. I'm more concerned about the ones without government ties. While China might hack to steal secrets, which is intolerable, but just another form of espionage common between countries, hackers without loyalties to countries can wage unrelenting attacks on our infrastructure.
So what do we do? We improve our fucking infrastructure. China is not going to attack our infrastructure and attempt to kill Americans and cripple our country. Why? For starters, they'd lose the money they invested in us. Additionally, their economy is hugely dependent on us. If America falls, China and most of the developed world falls. Lastly, how would America respond? In all likelihood, with nuclear weapons. Our best bet is to improve our infrastructure and when we trace back hackers to a government, we retaliate just as we do in all other forms of espionage- with political and economic sanctions.
Good ol' politicians spreading FUD. The stakes are higher, but the problems are still the same at the core.
Obviously Microsoft isn't researching a buzzword. They're researching a concept; more importantly, they're researching how to make money off of said concept.
Advertising on the internet will never die out. As long as Google can get their targeted advertisements in front of as many eyes as they can, they'll be a success.
How much can you bitch about Microsoft forcing you to upgrade, or about the features in the upgrade, when Microsoft is giving it to you for free? If you want a browser with a different feature set, then use IE just long enough to download one of the many alternatives out there! Personally, I use Firefox, but keep IE around to handle the broken webpages that only work in IE. The only reason people are clinging to IE6 is they are still accessing pages written to expect IE6's broken behavior, and they either know or suspect that those pages will not work properly with ANY other browser.
Because Microsoft does everything in its power to force people to use IE. This is especially true in the workplace. After my mom had gotten trojan after trojan, I tried to switch her to Ubuntu (easy distro imho). Sadly, her work required her to use a website that only works through Internet Explorer 6. She works from home, so she doesn't get technical support (except from me) and I don't want her to risk her job calling them incessantly. All she needs is a fucking web browser-- but thanks to Microsoft's shitty, broken IE anything developed for it only works for shitty, broken IE. This is intentional. It's called their business plan.
Yes, they could appeal, and yes, it could take a long time-- but that's how our legal system works. Long, heated debates ending in a hopefully lawful verdict. Are you trying to tell me the Federal government can't order Toyota to reveal the data on all the cars they are investigating?
How about as a parent you don't buy your kids inappropriate content and you don't allow them to possess it?
In America, and many other western countries, there is a system for rating games based on their content. Minors cannot purchase some media, including movies, games-- so why should all of us be restricted as a result of your poor parenting?
Well, sort of. I always pirate music, and if I especially enjoy an artist's music and continually listen to it I will buy T-Shirts and other merchandise. That way they get most of the money I spend and the ones I truly appreciate get all of my money-- the garbage albums with a few hits and some filler songs get rm -rf'd.
For my software, I use FOSS all the time and rarely need to use proprietary software (I'm a student).
I am a HUGE movie pirate. Why? Well, for starters movies are just too damn expensive-- and the quality of movies has been steadily declining for years. I pirate to avoid annoying DRM, but most importantly: I pirate so that the few quality movies I have the pleasure to watch can get all of my money. When I see a good movie, and I know I'll want to watch it again, I buy the fucking DVD. Shitty movies don't deserve my money, and good movies deserve all of my money that I would plan to spend normally.
I would LOVE to see a theater with a membership sort of deal; I enjoy going to the theaters, but paying $10 a ticket is unreasonable. I would pay $30 a month to see 10 movies. That way, the theater would get $360 a year from me instead of the $35 they're getting now. I feel like the entire entertainment biz is giving us the finger-- they routinely produce shit, at a low cost to them, and act surprised when people stop paying for it. Instead, people begin to pirate and rarely spend their dollars on such inferior goods.
No, you don't lose your phone when you are accused of a crime, and you shouldn't lose your internet connection based solely on accusations (even if proven).
No, the greedy banks started all their criminal, immoral, and unethical behaviors decades ago.
Democrats vs Republicans
Liberals vs conservatives vs moderates
It's all a facade to keep people like you arguing. Of course we're too busy to discuss the rampant violations of the Constitution (supreme law of what land?).
I spent most of my life in southern California. Droughts aren't uncommon, and if it they had done this during a drought they'd be getting a pat on the back. Then again, I didn't live in Orange County.
Either way, it's ridiculous that you can be jailed for this... I could possibly see civil action resulting-- but jail time? Silly me assuming that California's jails and prisons aren't overcrowded already-- oh wait, they are.
Cruise control isn't stupid. Daily, I drive on a somewhat curvy highway with regular inclines and declines. With cruise control set in my car, I can easily maintain my speed of 60 MPH. I can drive safely at 60 MPH, but manually staying at 60 MPH is just another unnecessary distraction. Also, the police in my area do nearly nothing, with the exception of writing traffic tickets. So I can get a ticket for going 64 in a 60....
But yeah, stupid automatic doodads....
I use my Linux box for nearly everything. The only use I have for Windows (on a separate, offline desktop) is for testing.
Yeah, I should have to pay an extra tax to cover ignorant users...
Seems fair.
I mean, no one seriously opposes health care insurance. That is just a crazy mind reform in the States which makes the scum defend the economical interests of the upper percentile.
I oppose health care insurance being handled by the Fed. I have absolutely no problem with individual states having their own "public options" and such. Hell, if it worked well in one state I would want it in my state. Get it done right in one state, and it will spread like wildfire throughout the union.
Whether or not you believe that AGW is significantly raising overall GW (which hasn't been concluded), we still have the problem of pollution. I grew up in a very, very polluted area where you were much more likely to develop asthma.
I believe that we should work to reduce pollution, including carbon emissions. We can recycle more, develop various renewable resources (solar, wind, nuclear, hydro, etc) WHILE drilling for oil. America's power infrastructure needs to be updated (which will go along nicely with the adding of various renewable energy sources). Along with this, we can cease our involvement in the Middle East (to a degree), saving on "defense" spending and "rebuilding" spending. Our dependence on oil isn't going to dissolve-- we still use oil for manufacturing and energy (which we can reduce).
Recycling conserves our resources, reduces pollution, and minimizes landfills (I hear that we have a process of converting trash into energy).
Essentially, quit polluting-- to stop pollution.
So the next time you're conversing with a "denialist," present my argument to them. I haven't met a single person who disagreed with me. Hell, we can spur growth in the economy (lots of jobs), create a new American industry that doesn't depend on "intellectual property," reduce pollution, save vital resources, save government funds (we can give out loans, not bailouts), reduce our involvement in the Middle East which will undoubtedly halt terrorism (less recruits, less money, less public support).
I doubt it will go how it should (AMERICAN POLITICS, FUCK YEAH), but you shouldn't bitch about someone's plan without supporting a better plan.
WHO's assessment system was based on five indicators: overall level of population health; health inequalities (or disparities) within the population; overall level of health system responsiveness (a combination of patient satisfaction and how well the system acts); distribution of responsiveness within the population (how well people of varying economic status find that they are served by the health system); and the distribution of the health system's financial burden within the population (who pays the costs).

The fact that it is even illegal is absurd. This case is just one depressing example.
Toyota ... generally won't allow the data to be read without a court order.
All it takes is a court order. So essentially the only thing slowing the investigations would be an unwilling Federal government.

I mean, think of their future-- don't you want them to be adults in a free society?

http://www.who.int/whr/2000/media_centre/press_release/en/index.html Instead of taking claims made by biased proponents (both those for health care and against it), read what they are citing and see the obvious spin.
> Typical liberal. Can't support your own needs. Need someone who knows how to handle their own money to pay for you.
So, what is social security again?
That thing that won't be around in a few years.
I have Verizon and it isn't blocked for me.
