So 10 or 20 people in their vans are 134 million japanese? Please, thats just wrong. We have ultra-nationalists in my country too (Austria) but that doesn't mean that everybody is like that.
And every company can hire whom they want. Why should they be forced to hire a certain person because he is just... a certain ethnic minority? Thats typical over PC from america, everything has to be so over PC that nothing works at the moment and you are scared to do anything.
Still I haven't had any racist incident in Japan, wherever I went. Might be just me, that behaves correctly and not like a bloody stupid loud foreigner...
Well I am a foreign Programmer in Japan and I am doing very well. Yeah there are a lot of working hours, but thats so, and I don't complain.
It's also wrong that foreigners can't start a business. Some do, some don't. It's probably not as easy as in America, but thats country laws and you can't expect the same everywhere...
Vaio computers are horrible. We had some here at our office and after some time they litteraly fell apart. Side covers came off, front panels broke. Thought they actually worked pretty well. In the four years I had only two HD failures out of 12 PCs...
thats not true, there is just a small group ho is "ethnocentric". I live here for more than fives years and have not yet had direct contact with any of those "ethnocentric" groups. all Japs I met were absolutely friendly and open to foreigners.
Do you also believe all Germans are Nazis, all Muslims are Terrorists and all Americans are just fat and dumb?
fully 100% agree. Most foreigners know Japan from some movies and Anime. They should come to Japan, live here for some years and hang out with japanese people and not more foreigners who bitch about japan.
I live here, for more than five years, and Japan is in basic like any other country. Yeah things work different, but thats like every country. In basic, one big difference is, that japanese are way more friendly and way more helpful.
Well, since there are no FS like those from Microprose, or Space stuff like Wing Commander or Tie Fighter out there anymore, and everyone plays only FPS, there is no need for joysticks
Thats why I love to use debian for this, you can have serveral postgres releases installed parallel, so in a migration term (eg from 8.1 to 8.2) I had both client packages installed and I run the correct binary for each DB.
Well, thats sort of not true. Postgres has internal users, you just can configure who and how users connect in an external file, which is extremly useful for emergency access and database transfer from one server to another.
I know, that this is confusing and difficult to understand. I really needed quite some time to grope this with my first postgres install, but once you get it, its much nicer than MySQL (IMVHO).
Postgres has the pg_hba.conf file where it defines which IP (or range) can connect with which method (unix user auth, internal auth with md5 or plain password, kerberos, etc) to which DB (or DBs).
I still create all my postgres users in postgres (with createuser), but I generally configure how to access it in the pg_hba.conf file. Which is very nice if you need to move the database from Server A to B, there is no way you can lock yourself out, because which IP can access which server is in a plain text file.
erm, wrong. I use postgres since 7.4, and I used it on several very heavy duty webpages. One (with postgres 8.2) got millions of hits every day and postgres just worked without any problem).
Last week a guy from America was here in our Tokyo office and he wanted to use his iPhone SIM card in a japanese phone, bummer, does not work. It worked with his previous plan, but well, iPhone SIM is so locked down, nothing works. Plus, the iPhone has no G3 so there is no way it will work in Japan anyway.
Another example why lockdown is just plain stupid.
erm, thats so not true. My coworker is Muslim and eats therefore only Hallal meat, and so whenever we go to a restaurant he makes sure the order is okay for him. They always comply. He never had any kind of issue.
On the other hand, I eat really anything, so I never come into the situation of "I cant eat this because of reason X". So hard to say for me.
yeah, but when I look back at the speed jump from 7.4 to 8.1 then I am blown away. This is so big and so surprising that even my low spec test box ran circles around my development box which again ran circles around my production box.
Yeah, I wished there would be a way to turn it into threading like Mail.app has. This is much better fore folders like the INBOX, to follow a thread, else in Thunderbird its then buried somewhere down below so you will never wind it again.
I have groups set up, where you can only see two things, the sender and the group as to, even if you reply to all, there will be one, or max two mails. If the To user was in the group, he will get only one mail.
If I get mails inside those "one line above, full quote bottom", I just cut everything below the quote, and reply in the good old style. At least I put a "break" into such threads.
But actually, most quick things get decided via Jabber (in house server) anyway... I don't have so much mail-hundreds-long-threads anymore as I had in one of my older companies.
I am a very low level player, I play perhaps ever two weeks for 5~6h, and after a little bit more than a year I also got the RROD. At least MS Japan gave me a month free gold subscription:)
thats 15.376 Yen, and I pay 4.280, including VOIP service ...
Time to kick ass and chew bubble gum, and it seems your all out of gum!
I never said it doesn't work on a desktop. I use it here on mine right now. It's just not as easy to setup as Ubunutu I think.
I do the same with debian actually. Well Ubuntu comes from Debian so there wont be a big difference I guess :)
Debian is sure not a desktop distribution. Ubuntu would be one. I run Debian on all my servers.

100% agree. XML rocks to talk between apps (eg php -> flash), but sucks big time in beeing a database (been there, tried, and learned a lesson)

The speed thing is slowly getting an urban legend. Postgres got really, REALLY faster since the 8.0 release and I am sure 8.3 will boost that more.
I always take postgres over mysql, I trust postgres more in a long term run with tons of data, than I trust mysql.

yeah, but they are happy they have finally a place where they can use silverlight.

The reason for this is, that if you put soy sauce on your rice, it means you are a beggar and very poor. Thats why it is very bad to do that.
It's acceptable if you have something on the rice already, for example raw egg, daikon, etc. Then you can put soy sauce on it.
really looking forward to this. I think 8.3-rc1 or 2 is in debian/experimental already ...
