And, there's not an ounce of sarcasm in that statement. It's like a microcosm of politics in our country. One group drops in spewing talking points they've had jackhammered into their earholes since 2009. The other group comes at it with factual arguments whether they're for or against the program. Unfortunately, it's easier, cheaper, and more effective for politicians to appeal to and incite the former group.

  3. Interesting HIV transmission rate stats on HIV Vaccine Trial Shows 90% Immune Response · · Score: 1

I was on a blog once where a guy posted that there's only about a 1/1000 chance of contracting it from an affected person. He then got flamed into dust. I looked up his numbers and it's actually true! During normal sexual intercourse, the rates are 1/1000 male (infected) to female and 1/2000 female (infected) to male. With rates that low, I don't even think "sexually transmitted" is the right word. You probably have to have an open wound, scratch, or open sore from another STD to transmit the virus.

Now, when you start getting kinkier (e.g. anal) the rates start going up. I can't recall the numbers for these, but I think they were around the percentile range (give or take a few factors of 2). I think because the skin in your nether regions is much thinner and porous. This is why the gay community has been so devastated by AIDS. Additionally, the rate of HIV in gay males is 1/5 with half that number not even being aware that they're infected :(

  16. Horrible change in Wall Street culture on Algorithmic Trading Rapidly Replacing Need For Humans · · Score: 1

To previous poster, the stock market is fundamentally designed to put people with cash on hand in touch with entrepreneurs with a need for investment capital. This is NOT what's happening here.

We had a client who bought one of our software libraries about 7-8 years ago and needed our help to build a trading app that employs these silly algorithms. These flash trading algorithms are exploiting market fluctuations that have little to do with fundamentals and sound investments. First you find a statistician to find stable market blips. If you've got instant access to the markets and wads of cash, you can exploit the fact that (hypothetical examples) there's a 2 hour dip in tech stocks when most IT staffs are in their Monday morning meetings. You can exploit the fact that private schools have orientation every 3rd Friday in August, so the NYC big wigs are all taking their kids to class and markets dip. Or that, on the Friday before the Super Bowl, Frito Lays sales spike for 4 hours because people are stocking up on chips for the game.

It's electronic money and I shudder to think what elements of our economy are being squeezed to generate it. The only thing that'll change this culture is to regulate flash trading out of existence.
