    This could be deliberate in an effort to create a stronger DRM package by the Entertainment industry.

    Like it is actually a standard part of the development life cycle for DRM. Kind of a "throw it to the wolves and see how long it lasts" mentality. Then it's back to the drawing board to try again.

    Not really.
    • He will probably appeal.
    • He'll say that the sentence is excessive and get it reduced.
    • There's always time off for good behavior.
    • What would be worse is if he's sentenced to have nothing to do with computers in any way, at all, ever.

    My concern is that these children will get use to the idea that being spied on is an OK thing.

    Once they are desensitized to the idea of not having privacy, it will get easier to get them to conform to whatever the people in power want.

    The US automakers have been fighting to keep the current standards for decades so that they can tout the "Great Milage" that their cars have. Now that something has come along that looks even better that the standard (read fossil fuel only) autos look worse, they probably have done some back door lobbying to change over to this new formula.
