Program in what you like... Although programming in QT won't get it included into gnome and programming in GTK won't get it included in KDE.
A lot of apps people develop never see the light of day... I've programmed hundreds of little apps for the various companies I've worked for.. I programmed in what I liked.. and what I was used to...
Just because you need to create a little app with a textbox and a button doesn't mean you need to include the HEAVY libraries of gtk/qt/gnome/kde.
Not a huge payoff.. but the payoff is definately there... Most school systems tend to be current on their licensing... I remember back when I was in school.. we had to have a license for every MECC games out there (oregon trail anyone?)... Schools (as broke as they are) still pay money for software.
But unfortunately, more group discounts tend to occur in the school settings.... so I think you tend to have more copies of the software out there at a lower price....
But doesn't SCO have their own compiler they ship with their OS (for $$$).. sort of like Solaris and IRIX?
All it would have the opposite effect... developers running SCO would then have to purchase the SCO C Compiler from SCO.. therefore SCO gets more money..
i got money on the wires being cut or the cameras being broken within the first few weeks.. I know I would have personally taken some of them out if I was in that school.
I wouldn't want to be watched all day.. if I wanted to be watched all day, I'd go to work.
And with the possibility of paying $1399 to SCO... I'm still worried (not) about SCO making me pay $1399 for my tivo. (yeah.. i know.. it's not a 2.4 kernel)
LaTeX is still the only way (note i'm not saying "good") to create PDF documents under UNIX that look the same EVERY time..
I try to use it on all projects in which I need to create badges and PDF forms.... Definately worth the learn.... Although the learning curve is worse than linux.
I've done the sysadmin / programming thing... I hate programming although i'm good at it.. most programmers I know hate programming after about 3-4 years...
I honestly don't want to do this the rest of my life... although I have no idea what i want to do. Programming sucks your brains out...
I love gentoo... I've been using it for about 6 months now... the best thing in the world is emerge sync emerge -up world The updates work.. Unlike upgrading from other distros... If gnome 2.4 came out tomorrow, emerge will have it.
I don't think i can go back to any other distro now.
for the millions of dollars this thing is probably costing... and only 1 GRAM!?!? geez.
You think they'd think of something better to do.
Something cool would be.. A) Collect a few pounds B) Fly back to earth orbit... C) Catch up with the ISS D) Grab said payload E) Transport it back to earth on the next shuttle mission..
Openview is already ported to solaris.. and most of the backend stuff it does is written in PERL.. So how hard is it to port to linux.... probably not hard at all.
The only thing i like about openview that would be useful is it's SNMP MIB Browser... no one else has ever come close to it.. although i haven't searched in the last 6 months
Being on an actual team at the contest, It was a lot better than their 2nd attempt.. Every time LTG throws an event. it gets better.. Although #2 required you to run a specific application on the webserver.. this one you could put anything you want.. (aka a static page with hello world).
But all and all it was good. I came in #1 for the 2nd contest. Team 2600 came in 1st this time (We, team penguinati, came in second this time).
but oh well.
It was fun.... the best thing is the food and beer...
I wrote a sendmail milter called Tantalus that stops spammers from guessing usernames... Basicly if they hit X wrong email addresses on your SMTP server in X amount of time, they are blocked for X number of minutes... It's really fun to watch them guess that 100 or so names they guess and hit the Xth wrong one and just be shut out...:) It basicly picks up where spamassassin and RBL stops.... It's kinda fun to watch it in debug mode.... and it's free.
I used UltraMonkey way back a few years ago.. It did the job.. and we never went down.. it has i believe 4 ways you can weight the webservers.... Actually.. it does more than just webservers... which is a plus as well...
I think the authors intent was that of a security CD.. more or less to scan your network for "issues".
:(
But.. it can be used for the powers of evil.
so more or less, in the US he would be found guilty of releasing hacking programs to the world..

I'm a geek, not a grammar nazi
What about this book:
http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/linuxkernel2/
It has linux kernel 2.4 snippets?
That's DEFINATELY violating SCO's (fake) IP.

Just my thought.

Supposively, if they don't fix it by this weekend, all the infected boxes are going to attack microsoft's website all at once.
:)
So in my opinion.... Don't patch it

What happens when we win?
Does that fortune 500 company look like a complete fool? Do they get their money back?
Do they sue for extortion?
The company that did it is a fool. It's probably Microsoft... registering their 2 copies.

I think people will start making their websites look better.. and then make other ones look bad (like it's been said in here).
What if i get a list of proxys.. write a program and click on each of the links and rate all of them..
It's easy as that... I don't think it'll work.
All the porn and viagra sites will be #1

Next on the kernel mailing list,
Tire vs Tyre in the embedded car control device code.
Nintendo (until recently?) has always taken a stand to produce kid friendly games (aka no adult games)..
This kind of censorship is expected from them.
I still think that's why most gamers still go with the PS2 or Xbox..

We installed cygwin on our NT box. In addition, we are running sshd on it. At night, our backup box ssh's in an and runs tar to grab what it needs.
very simple... and works.

No. The change was made at the 386.
The 386 was 32bit.
