Linspire's goal is NOT "to run windows programs on a windows interface".
They abandoned WINE back in 2002.
Their goal is to introduce Linux to the mainstream market in an easy and friendly way. Linspire / Freespire will NOT run any Windows software without installing an emulator of some sort.
There is a whole spectrum of Linux users. Some are on the high end (kernel hackers) and others are on the low end (village idiot). There are a LOT of people in between. Some who are technical, know how to use a computer, but, aren't Linux gurus. Maybe someone switched from Windows to Linux last month. Freespire gives these people a nice smooth transition into the world of Linux. If the person values their time they can fork over $20 and use the CNR service. If they would rather tinker under the hood and learn it for themselves they can apt-get. I don't buy your premise that those who know how to apt will run somethign besides Freespire. Sure, they could.... but, to be honest there are a lot of people out there who are tired of constantly messing around with their Linux distro to get it to work. They just want it to work and I think that Freespire makes that possible for a large percentage of people.
I think you've COMPLETELY missed the point. They aren't trying to sell Freespire to grandma or the other family members. They are marketing Freespire to geeks who know a bit about Linux. The company is still selling Linspire as their commercial product. They recommend Linspire and the CNR Warehouse to the customers who are in their target audience. But, for years, the geeks have been saying: "We like Linspire but, it's not for me. It's for my grandmother". Well, now there is a version of Linspire that is geared more towards the geek audience. They aren't trying to sell Freespire to their target market.
a) Use Linspire and get a CNR Membership (recommended for computer newbies and those who know nothing about Linux)
b) Use Freespire and apt-get to your heart's content.
It sounds like you are saying: "Well.... I like the ease of use of this CNR service.... but, I just don't want to pay for it". I don't like paying my phone or cable bill either. But, in the real world people pay for goods and services that they use. If you don't want to pay for it.... then you can roll your own or go without.
You can use apt-get to install all the non-commercial software in Freespire. Personally, I don't see $20 / yr. as being excessive considering my time is worth money. I spend more on that every month for my Netflix account.
Independent stations still exist. When I lived in Chicago I listened to WXRT. In Boston, I listened to WXRV. In NYC there is always WBAI. In fact, there are a small handful of radio stations that aren't owned by the ClearChannel monopoly. These stations play what they want to play. They aren't beholden to the RIAA and they aren't forced to play what the company tells them to play. I like radio. I'd much rather listen to a good radio program than veg out on TV. I can listen to the radio and work on my computer at the same time without the visual distraction of television.
Tom Petty hit the nail on the head with his song "The Last DJ" --
Well you can't turn him into a company man You can't turn him into a whore And the boys upstairs just don't understand anymore Well the top brass don't like him talking so much, And he won't play what they say to play And he don't want to change what don't need to change
There goes the last DJ Who plays what he wants to play And says what he wants to say, hey hey hey...
And there goes your freedom of choice There goes the last human voice There goes the last DJ
30?!?! You lucky bastard! When I quit I weighed 185 lbs. Now, I'm pushing 240. Total gain = 55 lbs. But, I started smoking again... let's hope those pounds start to melt away again. I'll die of lung cancer... but, at least I'll be skinny.
Another project to turn America into a police state. Just what we needed....:-(

Good point. The company I work for offers 10 vacation days (after 2 yrs), 5 sick days, and 12 paid holidays. I asked if I could use my sick days as "personal days" instead and was told: "NO". I argued that in the 6 yrs that I've been with the company I have only called in sick once! Meanwhile there are people there who regularly call in sick. One girl in admin must have had at LEAST 9 sick days last year. I told the boss, I would rather be honest and take the day off to do things that I normally don't have time to do (like run errands, get my car fixed, etc...). But, I guess if I was dishonest I could just call in sick and get off scot-free? It pisses me off.
Why is this "misleading"? We all know how to count. What makes this any different than the millions of other products that are sold at $19.95, $39.99, or $99.95 ? Advertisers have been doing this for years.
" For those who want to contribute an ounce of prevention, RIAA is making it easy, and potentially lucrative. In August of 1999, RIAA launched its CD-Reward program that provides monetary awards of up to $10,000 to an individual who provides the association with information regarding CD manufacturers illegally producing RIAA member company sound recordings.
Consumers, retailers and replicators can report any suspected music piracy to the RIAA by dialing a toll-free hotline, 1.888.BAD.BEAT, by faxing this Badbeat Form, by sending email to cdreward@riaa.com, or visiting the website at www.CDReward.com."
So, let's get to it! I see a 1-800 number, an email address, and a fax number(1-202-223-8322). What could we possibly do to tie up resources and cost them money? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.........
The old "shoot the messenger" bit. Jesse is running a Search Engine (and now it is just a demo with no real files). I don't understand how he can be held liable for files that other people are sharing? If this were the case -- the RIAA would have to go after Google. After all aren't they "aiding and abetting piracy" too? Isn't this what the judge decided in the Gnutella case? How can you hold someone liable if they aren't breaking the law? Jesse never broke the law and he still isn't.
Can I run the application that I want to run? Or, do I have to suffer with Microsoft products? Can it run non-Microsoft apps? If not -- then why bother?
I never understood the point off cursive anyway. I've printed my letters since I was in middle school (unless forced to use cursive). It was painful, it hurt my hands, and made my handwriting more unlegible then it already is. I always print when I write. I haven't used cursive in 10+ years now -- there is absolutely no reason to. I'll be happy when this form of "kid torture" is dead and buried. Goodbye and good riddance!
I'm taking those classes at UoP. I wonder if you have been my instructor before?:)
I have found that the classes at UoP are challenging. You get out of them what you put in. I strive for "A"'s because I know that I can do it. I put in the extra time and do all of my homework and then some. Some of the people I've seen in class try to skate through. But, they usually get what they deserve. There are no formal tests at UoP. You have to prove your knowledge through extensive research papers and Learning Team assignments. You can't just learn enough to pass the test. You have to apply yourself or you get poor grades.
I have found the format to work well for me. Some people just aren't cut out for the long hours of reseach and writing. I'm going to get my degree by 2004 because a large portion of my previous credits were transferable. I like online classes and I have always done better with directed study by doing my own research. I've had more problems in the traditional classroom then I have online. In the traditional classroom enviroment I didn't tend to push myself as hard. It all comes down to the individual.
Maybe Slashdot should set up a fund. We'll all chip in $20 and hire Justin for a year or two? Let him work on cool new P2P apps without the spectre of AOHell.

Yes. This has changed in Freespire. The user no longer runs as root by default.
