The instructions included 'pressing the build button' in the IDE to complete the homework assignment. In essence they are not even teach them how to compile from the command line. In fact they weren't even going to teach them that at all. I'm glas he cam to me for help or he may never have codded again. It's really sad to see Universities do this sort of thing.

and we are careful to give the credit to those engineers that build that code but we just don't modify any of it. I'm sure most companies benifiting from open source are using it in the same way we are. If we were in need of modifying some of the Open source packages it would most likley be a bug fix and everybody is into submitting bug fixes to the open source world. right? Besides it's so easy to just use OS packages call them or making objects that wrap OS code I can't imagine why you would want to actually cut and paste open source code into your closed source app. Maybe I'm just not malicious enough :)

I don't think IBM is going to stop shipping linux without a major fight. besides SCO can only legaly lay claim to certain pieces of Linux that IBM supposedly used in the linux kernel. I think the people of slashdot and others are not very informed on the subject and if they were would not be worried. the only legal thing to come of this is a revocation if IBM's license on the use of unix code. however the license is mutually exclusive and paid in full and therefore does not allow a stipulation on it's use which is exactly what the IBM case is. Also IBM has never used the media as a staging ground to fight it's legal battles they use the court room.

My employment says I must work a MINIMUM of 40 hrs per week. It also states that I must work to complete all tasks assigned to me by the dead line date. Of course the legality of a contract and it's terms is dictated by the company and the any state or federal regulations. In my state (Colorado) we have a no fault law, which basically means an employee can leave a company for any reason and there are no repercussions and of course this goes the other way with the employer which means they can terminate your employment with out giving a reason or compensation.
