I get paid to write in both PHP and Java/JSP and while PHP is very cool and I enjoying using it a lot. To give any comparison between the two languages is not a very good idea. The reason being is that while they both have been applied in similar area's ie:(JSP/ Servelets and PHP) their core architectures could not be farther apart. I mean common half the functions in PHP can only be used on *nix's because PHP front ends common C libs and this is very useful for PHP because it allows you to use code commonly used in standalone applications on *nix's in a multi user web based application. However if I were to try and code a cross platform application in PHP I wouldn't get passed the first object because most of those C libs are only on *nix's and on top of that reusing other peoples code in PHP is pointless unless you plan to mimic the software environment that they run their Lapp on. On the other hand all code written Java will always work on any machine because the over all architecture of the JVM. Again PHP was designed to be a powerful language used for the web applications and more specificly designed to take advantage of existing open source C libs to make complex web applications easier to code. And yes I know there is a compiler and I have seen the GTK stuff and I like it very much but all you need to do is go ahead and write command line application in PHP that makes an LDAP query then uses that information to make a gif. Write that code and then try to get it to work on windows and on *nix's and you tell me how that works out for you...

Gimme a fucking break what the hell does that mean. What is your deffinition of support... somebody to call and bitch at when it don't work? well that is bullshit too because it doesn't get the damn problem fixed. The biggest problem I have seen with pay products is that thier support is complete marketing bullshit and serves no purpose in the real world. For instance Oracle you have to pay an annual contract to have access to thier web site that has thier support documents and on top of that every damn time I've been thier I can't even find the fucking solution then I go search on Google and I find the problem in some Open Source forum that happens top be coding OSS for Oracle and they have broken down the problem with out the help of Oracle and have FREELY posted the sollution. Now tell me again why I pay Oracle for an annual support contract?... Hmm?... yeah that's what I thought.

Well we decided to use java and have not had any preformance problems what so ever. But in answer to the your general problem. It sounds to me like your lack of initial architecture is what is killing you. You need to rethink the architecture of your app and put code into the appropraite layers of that architecture. Every time I hear about a problem proting to multiple systems or tweaking code because of compilers, it just screams architecture redesign.
