that probably was a "-1, LALALALALALA i cant hear over the sound of steve's awesomeness"
If i had some modpoints i would have modded you up.. apple does float on their "we are perfect in every way" marketing, and as such elicit a rabid response from all non-steve-fanboys everytime they slip up. basically apple is just screaming "we are better then you!!" at everyone else. Its pretty damn logical that when they slip up, they get kicked when down..
Advertise yourself against higher standards, expect to be held to them.
Where is the "+1, sad but true" mod when you need it?
My GF had a HTC WinMo phone before she got her iphone, that thing was horrid... come to think of it, it should still be around the house somewhere, time to get the sledgehammer:)
i have an ipod '3g' 8gb (which is just a 2g with a nosejob), and i also applied the update, wish i hadnt. I got zero interesting features, and in return many apps changed in ways that mainly just annoy me (mail app implements conversation threads, but does so in a way that is inherently inferior to gmail's way, and actually makes me do more work to actually read an email), and at times my ipod now hangs for a few seconds...
If this annoyes me long enough, it's jailbreaking time... if only apple allowed a downgrade back to 3.x
buy a wii and a not-entirely bottom-end pc/laptop.
indie games usually dont have the hardwar requirements of this years crysis, so they will run on your basic office machine with a 50 buck graphics card, or a laptop with the best IGP chip around
(i'd be annoyed if a website kept spouting 'will not render correctly in IE6, please upgrade' to me while browsing with chrome...)
and as noted before, most websites want as much users as possible, telling joe public to upgrade internet explorer (which poor joe doesnt even know about, he just clicks the blue internet icon) is a surefire way to confuse people and turn users away.
Now if i were to set up a website targetted at even a remotely tech-savy audience, i would drop IE support in a second, redirecting them at a 'please get a real browser' page, but that isnt a possibility for most websites
At the very least the larger/smaller units of ton (1000kg) and gram (0,001 kg) are easily computable with each other, rather then the an ounce being 0,0625 pounds or the two varying definitions of the non-metric ton.
It might very well be arbitrary (as is pretty much any unit), but it is easier in use.
The taxpayer funded educations that turn out to be BAD investments are arguably a worse situation than what the GP said - people with only personal debt. I don't know, maybe you LIKE the idea of free government handouts with no strings attached?
not sure how it is in other countries, but here in holland, whatever gov. grants you get for your study starts out as a loan, only on completion of said study (within X years), does it become a grant, and any money you lend extra above your normal grant stays a loan, to be paid off.
The mere fact that guy is posting online indicates he HAS a computer and the networking gear to connect it all up, many people dont.
There are charities which gather up old (often ex office equipment) computers, set them up and ship them to africa to be used in schools, i would imagine they would welcome some free networking gear so some form of network can be established. At the very least ask those organisations, they know what is needed down there
in this case, the positive effects of the second wrong doesnt entirely cover the victims of the first wrong, thus creating a third group which has been left out twice, proper balance would require even more wrong-doing...
What surprises me is no SLAX. When i first found it SLAX was a very usable live-cd which would fit on those tiny 8cm CDs (before large enough USB sticks were affordable enough to just have a few in your bag) and had an easy startup option to load the entire image into ram
Then i check it a few months ago, it now offers an interface on the website to select from a very large library of software, click the boxes you want and presto, instant live-image completely to your own taste
mayorly off-topic here, but is there any way to check if you hit the cap?
My karma is currently scored "excellent", and from what i gather from the FAQ, that is the highest qualifier, but i have no idea of the underlying numbers, and wether i am capped out, or merely hovering one peg above "good"
Perhaps for your own use and enjoyment, but making a port (copy of original gameplay) and then putting it in apps-stores? how is that not a trademark/copyright violation? If sony owns the rights to lemmings, they alone should be allowed to port it to the iphone for common distribution.
Now i realize in this case it kind of sucks since the intrepid geeky developer acting alone and (at least partially) out of passion and fanaticism for games/programming gets beaten back by the big soul-sucking mega-corp, but this works both ways, these laws also prevent sony from taken this guys' original games and shamelessly putting them on the PSP without paying him.
From a geek/nerd point of view, the whole '36 hours to port to several platforms' action was cool and all, but in all other aspects, pretty stupid, especially if the guy knew he was gonna violate sony's rights
Apollo (and in general the push to the moon, including mercury and gemini) got us (well, you americans anyway) from barely being able to shoot a single guy in a can into orbit, to doing in-orbit rendevous, lunar transfer orbits, and landing on a frickin moon! (in ~10 years from the start of serious spacetravel to moon walking)
The ISS is mostly mir 2.0 combined with freedom (the us proposed space station), and while it is the pinacle of space-station design and operation, most knowledge regarding long term stays in space was already found aboard MIR and its salyut predecessors.
Claiming the ISS is responsible for more scientific progress then the first ten years of the space-race is ridiculous
Pulseaudio also sucks ass... dropping sound all the time.. whenever i have a stream open in vlc i usualy end up killing vlc and restarting it every twenty-thirty minutes because pulse-audio simply stops outputting the sound..
pulseaudio is the sole reason right now that something like ubuntu isnt as user friendly as windows. Driver installation is on par on both systems these days, and niche stuff can be handled by the compu-geek at install-time, but constantly dropping audio is inexcusable for the lay-user
yeah, ubuntu with compiz was awesome back in the day, vista wasnt out just yet, and we linux guys suddenly had spinning cubes, transparency and shaded fire effects on our desktop:)
unsecured wifi sometimes also leaves the router admin pw as the default, a few guesses and your in...
I actually saw this at my moms place a few years back. Her own internet was being a terrible bitch and we needed to get online, so i found an unsecured wifi from one of the neighbours, closer inspection showed the router was also wide-open, so i poked around a bit... i dont quite remember, but i think i even improved a few settings...
anyway, do you have any control where your neighbour parks his pickup trick which you sometimes secretely hitch a ride on?
Ok, i just RTFS again, and it turns out the phone doesnt belong to the dead guy, but to the widow.. In which case i fully agree with verizon charging the ETF. She made the choice to move to some backwater town, she should have realized the consequences of that, and accept it, or dont move..
i'll probably lose some karma over this, but fuck it, this is about personal responsabilities, something most people dont take seriously enough

wouldnt that still require browser-detection?

Wouldn't it be "this... is... NASAAAAA!!!"? (or perhaps "this.. is.. RUSSIAAAA!!!")

for bonus points, hit up the gag-shop for a fake mustache just before the annual company (with partner) party/dinner

There is no such thing a positive discrimination

Why, you seem like someone who has something to hide Mr, betterunixthanunix....
not having a facebook page to start with is a good start.
It becomes somewhat harder to find damaging fotos on your friends' pages if they arent conviently linked in your own page
Still you have a very valid point though...
So you're saying batman is standing between us and affordable spacetravel?
I find your ideas intruiging and wish to subscribe to your newsletter
