  1. Redhat - on Big Brother Awards · · Score: 1

RH is not going to be the distribution people hate, why is it that RH popularity pisses people off.

If you do not like the product OK, your choice but what drives you to dislike the company. Granted it is an extremely popular distro, and seems to be every where but they have not done anything injurious to anyone. All they are trying to do is make money, and not a lot I might add.

  2. its gonna be redhat on Dell: Linux will be Option Very Soon · · Score: 1

every where u look u c rh, every linux var sells rh. Don't get me wrong I use and like rh, but enough is enough.

And i would not buy a pc from dell, there are only a step (and a small one) up from the cockroach that is NEC/Packard Bell.

  3. wasted thought on US-DOD confirms "cyber-attacks" · · Score: 1

I am sure I read that all computers containing sensitive defence information are prohibited from being networked. In fact it was written that the DoD employees got their news on tape in the early days.

The level of security was so tight that an expert was rumoured to say a security breach would mean a breach of trust. In short treason.

Has this changed or are these attacks on admin computers, and thus of less significance. Did the DoD relax its security in the face of increasing hacker activity or is this just media hype ??!

first the new kernel, now the port for jdk 1.2 - all is right with the world.

Now I can finally get around to installing freebuilder.

Wonder how long before the actual release, or more importantly how long before the mirrors actually get the files. Maybe they should have held off announcing till then

  5. Independent thought on Microsoft claims Linux provides weak value · · Score: 1

"We've got a mind of our own, so go to hell if what you're thinking is not right"

I know you are being sarcastic, and I agree who gives a flying fsck what ZD thinks. I have problems believing that they printed M$ opinion on Linux, which bunch of morons are they targetting.

Then again if you tell yourself something often enough you begin to think it is the truth, sane people call it being delusional. Those who ignore the whistle of the oncoming train ...get the picture.

And the comparison to NCs, they will see the difference when we leave our collective feet in their ............

  6. Amen !! on Opera for Linux · · Score: 1

Netscape is a big fat hideous pig, that prevents me from truly insulting those trifling widows users. The sooner this b_tch can be replaced the better. This is the only Linux program that 'crashes' regularly without help - actually it consumes too much resources so I kill it.

Opera is ugly, it may be fast but I refuse to spend hours using the product, and why no tabs. I admire the two pigs in the garage myth but the product is trash. Considering its relative youth the product should have been better - must be taking lessons from M$. I have yet to see why anyone would want to use Opera much less pay for it. For 30 I can get the LinuxMall smorgasborg and have change for a Banks (actuall at 180 to 1 a case of Banks). Give me lynx instead.

Mozilla seems to be the messiah coming to save us, we will soon see if Netscape (and the nice people at http://www.mozilla.org ) can mend their profligate ways and produce a stable browser.

  8. Flame wars are good on Interview with Dennis Ritchie · · Score: 1

With some exceptions the much reviled flamewars allow for ingenuous exchange of ideas and opinions among (an admittedly) bright collection of minds. At least /. flamewars do.

They allow those of differing opinions to postulate about the advantages of 'their' products. While the claims may occasionally be spurious, the discord is usually beneficial.

Unix has evolved into many different flavours each as unique as those that use them. While the incompatibility is bad the variety is good, and to be desired.

  9. It won't work on Gnome 0.99.8 released · · Score: 1

We all enjoy flame wars, but your attempt lacks the subtlety needed to provoke one. I am sorry but you will have to make a less obvious attempt. Maybe remove the MS refugee slur, that makes the comment too obvious or you could include your email address to tempt us.

  10. Pentium III's overpriced on But what of the P3? · · Score: 1

Water's wet. What else is new.
Assuming AMD and Cyrix remain the price will drop the PII cost a fortune when it first came out.

By next year you will have a PIII or equiv on your desktop. This is because you can never have a PC that is fast enough - I remember 40MB hard drives and the 32MB limit. As long as Windows swells, Intel will build faster chips and those of us who use Linux will benefit. This maybe the only upside to Windows; fast cheap chips.

  11. Why always RH? on Infoworld Awards Red Hat Linux 5.2 · · Score: 1

As a RH user since 5 I have to agree. RH is not much better than the other distributions (the opposite is also true - I ain't a traitor). Most of the tools used in RH installation are available on other platforms, I know the installation of Turbo Linux parrots that of RedHat. Combine this with average build quality - broken Navigator etc. I do not think that RedHat is as sterling a product as its accolades would lead you to believe.

Their much vaunted support only covers installation, assuming you do not have any exotic hardware and are capable of reading and understanding the installation of RH is a snap. The definition of an installation is unfair, leaving the newcomer to figure out his modem alone.

Aside from the email tech support, the tech docs on the site are in some ways deficient - mainly with respect to their age.

However while RH 5+ may not be the best distribution by far it does deserve consideration as the best. RH the company is almost a model citizen, especially with the RHLabs. I could more conceive of the company being given an award.

On the other hand the award is for Linux, RedHat just benefits from being the most popular. Linux also benefits from the exposure RedHat gets, and so does Debian and the other distributions. All in all it is a win win situation.
