    What's true about it? Is there a big stash of GOP votes that haven't been counted? Unless that is true, or unless the Democrats were loudly calling for a new election (AFAIK they only wanted recounts) your cries of hypocracy are completely baseless.

    Right, because it is good for your Democrat to follow the legal process to challenge the election result when she lost, but not good for the Republican to do it when he lost.

    She followed existing law. He wants to pass a new law to allow for a new election so he might win a second time. Could you find a less relevant comparison?

    I live in North Dakota, which has a Republican govenor and the state legislature is solidly Republican. And yet our entire congressional representation is Democratic.

    Nevermind that the GOP is so very concerned about voter fraud, as long as your a minority and are likely to vote democratic. Democrats might have committed shenanigans as well, but you shouldn't throw stones in a glass house buddy.

    I think it's not up to the courts to decide this case.

    Who else can? The government can't pass legislation punishing a single company.

    Now look at the customers. There is absolutely no good reason they would have to buy Windows, or any of the other products Microsoft offers. They have a choice.

    That's the point: no they DON'T have a choice. If you are a business, you have no choice but to use what costumers use. And that at the least means Microsoft Office. To do anything else means you risk loosing customers.

    However, once customers get smart, see the trends, and stop supporting Microsoft

    Impossible. Windows runs the deskop corporate world. Just about any industry you are in, the software you use only runs on Windows. Accounting. Finance. Aritecture. Banking. You will find some exceptions, like Macs in the graphics industry, but those are just that: exceptions. A monopoly doesn't have to have 100% marketshare, just enough to hurt competition and consumers. The only way consumers will stop supporting Microsoft is if their products become completely unusuable, or something comes out that surpasses Microsofts products by decades. Neither is going to happen.

    Bzzt! Those are the only prominent luddites in the Democratic party, versus many in the GOP. Yes, the Democrats have Libberman (who, as another poster pointed out, is NOT liberal), and Tipper Gore. Actually not so much Tipper anymore, because even if she still wants to censor cds, she has no platform to speak from.

    So we have the conservative Liberman for the Democrats, and on the right we have....Ashcroft, Powell, Santorum, Bennett and Falwell, off the top of my head. And yes, you can find Democrats from Bill Clinton to Jesse Jackson making moralistic comments, but making a couple of pandering comments does not a luddite make. Jerry Falwell and William Bennet spend more time moralizing on their days off than Jackson does in ten years.

    No, the GOP has firm control over being the party of luddites; they don't have any other choice if they want to continue pandering to Southern Babtists and members of the Moral Majority.

    Can you make a thumbs up? Try doing it right now. Do it. Do it. No, seriously, do it. Okay, now lower your thumb down to your index finger. Now, imagine a remote in your hands, and making the same motion. Its that easy.

    The first time your kids have to spend signifigant time away from you is when they start going to school. Before that, you have a great deal of control. If we filtered all media to make everyone happy all of the time, all we'd have is Watching Organic Paint Dry on PBS, so stop expecting others to do your parenting for you, and take some responsiblity. The V-chip has been avaliable for what, 10 years now? And any digital cable box also comes with parental controls. Its really not that hard.

    When your kids start going to school, there are even odds they'll be exposed to words worse than "ass" in a matter of hours. The world is not going to wait on your children until you think they are ready, so you better make your children ready for the world.

    And many of us think a few words, including "ass", should be kept of the public's airwaves.

    And I think that Fox should be taken off the air for journalistic malpractice (if there isn't such a thing, there should be). But the point of free speech isn't to protect popular speech, its to protect unpopular speech.

    There have been cultural luddites for thousands of years, wringing their hands over foul language and how the younger generation shows no respect for their elders. And for thousands of years they've been wrong, every step of the way.

    Just yesterday, somebody with those asshole lights was tailgating me, you know, the ultra-bright lights which are probably very good off-road, but when blasting through your rear-view mirror by an asshole tailgater, they make it IMPOSSIBLE to safely change lanes.

    Yeah, I was driving my dad's SUV when I (doing the speed limit) passed a truck pulling a trailer, and the asshole put his brights on me. At that moment I wish I had a James Bondian type console, hit a button, and a large mirror would shoot up from my dad's tailgate, covering the rear window. Instant blindness for Mr. Dickhead behind me.

    And because you were DRIVING WAY TOO SLOW. If the cop has any sense he'll give BOTH of you reckless driving tickets. Driving too slow can be just as much of a hazard as driving too fast.

Why should I pay anything towards the U.S. military, when I don't life in a large city and am under no threat from terrorist attacks.

    And you ask all taxpayers to pay for your driving. Even your local neighbor who doesn't drive. Has to pay for your roads.

    Thats because all taxpayers benefit from having good roads, regaurdless of how much they drive.

    I have one too, but don't feel like digging around the back of my computer to see if its the same model. Mine only bitches when there isn't a keyboard plugged into the keyboard port. So I plug in my cheapass, extra usb keyboard (coincidently made by Belkin) and I'm good to go.

    ...only if the iMac and eMacs were the only computers that Apple made. As they aren't, I don't see that you have much of a point. People don't bitch at Shuttle for not putting out compact boxes with 6 PCI slots for the cost of an X-

    People usually argue that enthusiasts like myself should be buying PowerMacs, but the whole point is that a $500 PC is just as capable of doing these things as a $2000 PowerMac.

    Once you add all the stuff you are talking about, its not going to be $500 anymore. Duh. And PowerMacs aren't $2000, either. If you want a deal, either wait till Apple updates the line, and grab a unsold machine of the previous generation for a hefty discount. Or if you don't want to wait, get a refurb, they have the same warranty. The cheapest one they list at the online store is a 1.8 GHz 512MB 160GB SuperDrive for $1400.

    If you're complaining that Apple doens't offer a cheap box of parts, just stop because its not going to happen, and that chestnut is older than Ray Charles's great grandfather, and Ray himself is old. And dead.

    As for your list, Firewire makes just about everything on your list irrelevant, and iMacs have had Firewire for what, five years now? Six? As for having two giganics, just how many people need two on a personal computer? Certainally not for a firewall.

    To a minority, they do matter

    Keep in mind that having a plethora of models for every conceivable minority was killing Apple in the mid-90's. Unless there's a major shift in the computing industry, Apple will never deviate from having seperate "consumer" and "pro" lines.

    As for using even a first gen iMac...how many cable/dsl modems DON'T have a usb port? And even if they don't, you can get USB -> ethernet adapters pretty cheaply these days. Boom, firewall.

    I am not talking about the level of users that are on slashdot, I am talking about the stereotypical mother/grandmother.

    Bully for them. However, the majority of users make use of the second mouse button all the time (its indispensible in Windows), and that majority grows all the time as kids learn to use computers and old fogeys kick the bucket.

    Do it based on percentages, or maybe 5 years worth of profits. But along with this would necessarily come more inspectors for oversight...because if the threat of severe punishment were enough, we wouldn't have any drug users in the United States, especially New York state. However, the fines would probably pay for the inspectors, and then some.

    This would also help reduce the number of lawsuits. Right now a lawsuit and a good attorney are your only weapons as an employee/consumer, but advocates of "tort reform" want to limit lawsuits so much that they are meaningless to any defendant who has enough money.

    As I said before, if you're plugging Opera, its your job to show its superiority, not just two word bullets like "its faster".

    Why not narrow it down to three or four features that you think put Opera head and shoulders above Firefox, back them up logically, use the preview button, and I will give them serious consideration. :-)

    He didn't miss it. Somebody put it best, as that big business rents the Democratic party from time to time (see Hollywood and the DMCA) but it co-owns the GOP along with the religious right.

    Well lets see, he's a deocrated Vietnam Vet, and has spent over half of his life in public service, as opposed to Bush who was in "drunken frat boy" mode until he was 40.     Because they generally are? Wanting a frugal government is one thing, but having tax cuts for the sake of having tax cuts is another.

    I read the republican *platform* and smile in admiration, but year after year, it is completely ignored by those in office.

    Ignored? How about completely abandoned? Everything from non-intrusive government (gay marriage amendments, Patriot Act) to 'smaller government' (Homeland Security, No Child Left Behind) to responsible federal budgeting (extending the debt limit so we can have an even bigger deficit).

    Not that the Democratic party isn't in a mess...no goals, 'moving to the center' even though it keeps costing them elections, modeling their responces to GOP attacks on the Dukakis campaign, weak responces to the GOP's 40 year lead on PR. But at least they don't consistently act against their supposed core principles the way the GOP leadership does.

    Why would they? NAFTA was a bipartisan peice of legislation and passed with plenty of votes. And free trade was just as much an issue for Republicans as it was for Clinton.

    WTF are you talking about here? Kosovo was one of the most bloodless (for us) operations in history. It stopped Serbia from invading Kosovo and putting over a million people out of their homes. So I say again, wtf are you talking about?

    As for non-sex scandals, I have three words for you: Whitewater and Hillary Clinton.
