  1. Re:IO? on New Photos of Io · · Score: 1

I _honestly_ thought taht Io was some kind of weather system or mountain range or something like that... It could be anything really. Sorry that it wasnt so obvios, I should know better than to say anything about slashdot writing style, other than Dr Katz whom everyone rips on.

  2. Re:IO? on New Photos of Io · · Score: 1

All I wanted was "(one of jupiters moons)" or something like that, would that totally dumb down the whole piece? I don't really keep up to date on every thing NASA is doing. I don't think that everyone on slashdot knows what the hell Io is. It really annoys me that simply making this one suggestion would get such angry replies and no agreements. I guess proving someone wrong is more important.

  3. Re:IO? on New Photos of Io · · Score: 1

well aperenty when people were talking about it in the posts they said IO, so sorry if i didn't know that Io is a moon. The point was that I saw Io and was like "huh? whos that?" Then after reading the summary I had some clue, but still didnt know what the heck Io was! You dont have to start troll pointing just cause I made a mistake :(

  4. IO? on New Photos of Io · · Score: 1

Opps hit the return accidentally... Anyway, I was about to say... Could the people who write something like this possibly not use acronyms without telling what they mean first. I really did not know what IO was and it would be nice if it wasn't assumed that everyone knows what it means. It would only take a second to add a short phrase saying what it is before talking about it. Thanks for listening.

  5. not-techno on Ask Slashdot: What Music do you Code By? · · Score: 1

Most electronic bass pounding music annoys me. I like something with a more inventive twist. Something like Folk Implosion uses samples a lot better. Basically, anything with Lou Barlow in it is good and gets you in a groove. To pick you up when you are slowing down, perhaps put in some surf rock ala Dick Dale or Man or Astroman?. Definitely some stereolab on a long lonely quiet night is nice too. Also, if the lyrics are distracting I put in something like John Zorn's Masada which is a jazzy more mellowed out klezmer.

  8. The Rominauld Tanglin Award on Notes Toward a Postcyberpunk Manifesto · · Score: 1

Each year the composer Glenn Branca gives out this award for cyberpunk novels. He also sells a lot of the books. Quite odd seeing as Branca's music is not electronic, but experimental orchestra/multiple guitars. The link on the front page is wrong the address for the cyberpunk section is http://www.glennbranca.com/cyber.html, not cyberpunk.html.

  9. Re:They done this before. on QNX OS on a floppy · · Score: 1

Im amazed this wasn't picked up by slashdot earlier. But anyway, what the submission fails to mention is that they have two versions now. One is for dialup internet connection and the second is for network connection. I've never tried the network connection one since I dont have a network... Maybe I could put it in a box at school and boot it up... Anything is better than windows... Anyway, this is still pretty impressive that everything fits on a floppy and it autodetects your hardware most of the time!

  10. Virtual Classroom on Technological Pratfalls of an Online Education · · Score: 1

I am taking a "Distributed Operating Systems" class right now over distance learning and we had an assignement to hand in for this week. Now this is not your beginner computer science class, but the people still could not get it that you have to submit your homework using what they call an "activity" and not post it directly to the message board. So when I was checking messages, I see all 7 or 8 homework assignments posted right there for everyone to read! Then the next day there were more submissions but you could tell they copied it off the first person who submitted it publicly. I still sat down and did the work on my own because otherwise, what is the point of taking the class?

  11. wowser on Google is launched! · · Score: 1

This is really beutiful. I am on my shell account and google just looks spectacular on lynx. It is simple and clean and loads fast. The results seem to be very relevant and of course no adds is nice too! One thing I don't see, and I browsed through the FAQ etc is what you can add to a search to make it more relevant. I know in most browsers you can use use boolean operators. Also I often use + or - to make sure a word shows up or doesnt show up. Does google support these kinds of things? If someone finds some info on it, perhaps post it here. Even without using the extra functions this browser is still very effecient! Way to go google.

  12. "Distance Learning" on Building Virtual Universities · · Score: 2

My school (NJIT) offers most of their classes in a "virtual classroom" as they call it. I have taken one of these classes in the past and I am currently taking one on distributed operating systems right now. The way the classes work is that the teacher usually has a series of I think are slowly being moved over to real video, but without high bandwidth it wouldn't work as well. To keep in contact with your professor there is a message base system. This same system is used to give out the assignments where you send back your answers and the grades are later tabulated. Now, when I took my last course I have to admit that I never once watched any of the videos. You either had to pay some exorbitant amount of money (something like 60 dollars to borrow the videos plus 18 dollars shipping) or find time to go to the schools library and watch the videos there. So basically I read of skimmed over most of the book and did the few assignments and then we had to go and take an actual final exam in person. I don't really think I learned as much as I would have in an in person class. Until broadband connections are more affordable and common I don't really see learning over the internet as effective as the real thing. It allowed me to slack in learning and still end up getting an A. It might have been the subject matter however, it was a lot of information systems speak where they give new terms for topics you could think of normally. Maybe the class I am taking now will be a better learning experience, but I still think you would learn more having real discussions.

  13. Re:too new on Mandrake 6.1 Is Out (For Real This Time) · · Score: 1

If you have ever tried Mandrake you know that they always try to have the most cutting edge software at the time of the release of their distro. I have already download the kernel RPM and have been using it without any problems. Mandrake does a good job at making sure the development software they do include is not too buggy. KDE 1.1.2 has been released and is ready for consumption. If you want software that is all final and nothing cutting edge, than you should use redhat, even though it still is buggy.

  14. Re:GPL: Disappointing on 3Com Releases GPL'd Drivers · · Score: 1

If it is open source why then you can modify the code, or someone else probably will for BSD. That is the whole beauty of open source, they don't have to release versions for everything, someone else will take care of it. The main reason why they probably don't release it for BSD is that they don't want to have to support it. If the code is out there and there is a will to use it on another system, someone will modify it.

  15. new KDE on Mandrake 6.1 NOT Out (Update) · · Score: 1

I think they were just waiting for the KDE version to be finished. The beta they had up before was built from the 1.1.2 CVS, not that I tried it mind you (no highspeed bandwidth or CD burner). Things like Lothar for configuring hardware look very promising, however maybe they should have waited to see what Redhat is really doing and incorperate it? No matter, either way Mandrake always puts together a solid distrobution.

It might be just me but it seems quite odd that the place where your comic is hosted is made with an Adobe product. This is mainly because it claims to be a geeky site. One would think that a geek site would at least write their own code, not to mention the choice of OS. Do you touch the design of the page where your strip is located or do you just upload the comic strip to someone who uses the WSIWYG type of editor?
