Blizzard of course doesn't go after Fan Art, Fan made movies, and even some of the very questionable stuff that goes on over at darknest (such as model and skin edits in the live game!) not counting all the nude warcraft art.
I'm not a little happy about the way blizzard sometimes reacts (bnetd, glider, etc) but they certainly give their customers and fans a lot of freedom. I wish other companies weren't so bloody stupid. Why hurt your customers?!
I know someone will step in with the proper history... but did you know, Blizzard was originally meant to make Warhammer games for Games Workshop?
After they had a falling out and denied blizzard their IP, blizzard modified it sufficiently and renamed it into Warcraft, releasing the original "Orcs and Humans" game. Needless to say, they've had nothing but the most immense success with Warcraft 2, Warcraft 3, various expansions, and now World of Warcraft and its Expansions. As well as giving it a Sci Fi twist and coming up with Starcraft 1 and 2.
I've always hope Games Workshop was kicking themselves hard over their stupidity for losing blizzard to make their own even more successful franchise when games such as Warhammer Online are a total flop.
But I guess they haven't really learned anything going by their current behaviour.
ZFS speeds up rebuilding a RAID (called resilvering) over traditional non-intelligent or non-filesystem based RAIDS by only rebuilding the blocks that actually contain live data; there's no need to rebuild EVERYTHING if only half the filesystem is in use.
ZFS also starts the resilvering process by rebuilding the most IMPORTANT parts first; the filesystem metadata and works its way down the tree to the leaf nodes rebuilding data. This way, if more disks fail, you have attempted to rebuild the most data possible. If filesystem metadata is hose, everything is hosed.
ZFS tells you which files are corrupt, if any are, and insufficient replicas exist to due failed disks.
Sigh. The stupid stuff people keep asking over and over.
To me, teenager always meant 10 and up. I don't know. Maybe the definition is different in Australia. (I'm from Adelaide, too, btw, where this took place. Adelaide is a city of just over 1 million people.)
What were they doing in a storm drain? I don't know, exploring maybe? We've had stories about underground urban exploration on slashdot before, and there's many sites out there on it, such as caveclan. (http://www.caveclan.org/). Their site appears to be down atm but it was about the exploration of tunnels in Melbourne and around Australia.
And yeah, as others pointed out; perhaps their signal wasn't strong enough to call but they could text or get data.
I haven't read the comments posted yet, and i'm sure there's many posts that say the same thing as this, but....
Yes, its fine.
You are allowed to sell GPL'd software for a price, as long as the source is available. Even the insanely pedantic Richard Stallman won't argue against what you did.
You put in the effort to port it to the iPhone and in doing so along with putting it on the App Store you are required to pay for the Apple Developer License.
There is absolutely NO reason why you can't charge for the binary you compiled and made available via the App Store. AS LONG AS THE SOURCE IS AVAILABLE.
If people don't want to pay, that's fine, they can use the source to compile their own binary and put it on their jailbroke iPhone for free or whatever. Who cares. At this point it is no longer your problem.
Your coded changes are still freely available under the GPL; it's just your packaged, signed, and apple approved binary that is not.
So in the spirit of the GPL, legally AND morally, you are fine.
The point is, these "exclusive" agreements are anti-competitive, detrimental to consumers and should be illegal. (And they are in other countries that have consumer protection laws.)
In Australia all 5 telco companies offer the iPhone. Oh and you can even buy legit unlocked ones direct from the apple - brick and mortar or online.
Competition due to consumer protection laws is a great thing.
Exactly! Google Latitude is just an inferior (and potentially confusing) version of the maps app. Sure the maps app might actually use Google Maps but it's the Apple extensions that really put the shine on it. It's absolutely right that this be limited to a web-app. Furthermore, who would want to allow an application to continuously run in the background? It opens up all sorts of angles of attack, it's dangerous, resource intensive, and Apple is right to disallow it. Apple know what's best for it's customers. They shound't, and they won't allow the likes of Google to undermine their customers' experience with the iPhone using shoddy, poorly designed applications.
You, sir, are the biggest idiot I have ever met online.
New 'shock' report into church sex abuse Article from: Agence France-Presse
July 21, 2009 11:19pm
A SHOCKING new report has identified hundreds of victims of child sex abuse by Irish Catholic priests, officials and clerics say, two months after a landmark study found "endemic" mistreatment. A Government-appointed commission of investigation headed by a judge has been probing allegations of abuse by priests in the archdiocese of Dublin - the country's biggest - since March 2006.
Archbishop of Dublin Diarmuid Martin has warned that the report - being presented to Justice Minister Dermot Ahern on Tuesday - would "shock us all".
It is the first time the state has investigated how the once-powerful Church in mainly Catholic Ireland has run its affairs.
It probed whether the Church reported abuse allegations or attempted to "obstruct, prevent or interfere with the proper investigation" of complaints.
A spokeswoman for the archdiocese said the Church authorities had identified between 400 and 450 people that allege they were abused by one of 152 Dublin priests since 1940.
"I would like to stress that that is a very conservative estimate and is likely to rise," she said.
It is not yet clear when the report will be published. "The minister will refer the report to the Attorney General Paul Gallagher to see how best to proceed," the justice spokesman said.
In May Ireland was rocked by a landmark report that concluded sexual, physical and emotional abuse was "endemic" in Church-run industrial and reformatory schools, orphanages and other childcare institutions dating back to the 1930s.
Prime Minister Brian Cowen said it contained a "shattering litany of abuse of children in care in this country over many decades".
He told Parliament the report was the gravest in the history of the country and contained "such horrific stories that it is difficult to know where to begin in talking about it".
This scary question remains: Would I be breaking Irelands new anti-blasphemy law by bringing this up?
Ahhh yes, but you can personally thank Mr. Stephen "Dickwad" Conroy for providing the necessary incentives for getting the Pirate Party of Australia up and running ASAP.
Mod me flamebait all you want, but the fact is it's TRUE. Americans are so blinded and oblivious to the better conditions outside their own country elsewhere, even as far close as their own northern border.
I never liked consoles either. Ever. Fuck that shit.
PC gaming is where its at, and always has been.
What I was planning on doing was logging out of google services, and blocking all google cookies....
Any other suggestions would be welcome.
Not just in London, I think you will find that this is the case everywhere in the world...
$8/hr !?!!?!
Have things really gotten THAT BAD in the US??? Wow...
As an aussie.... /agreed!
And anyway, its not gonna stop jack shit. Everyone will just buy the game off eBay.
But what exactly is stopping you from just buying whatever phone you want and chucking your simcard into it?
Its what we do in Australia... every phone in the past 10 years i've bought off of ebay.
Just use ZFS, its already been done.
kthxbai.
I didn't even know about warhammer 40k :)
But pretty funny if they recreated that too, with more success.
Thought I'd add:

Talk about Idiots.

Go the pirate party....

All this on top of double or triple parity. :)
This is something the ZFS creators have been talking about for some time, and been actively trying to solve.
ZFS now has triple parity, as well as actively checksumming every disk block.
Sigh. The stupid stuff people keep asking over and over.

Tell me again why Apple's not Evil ?

About damn time if you ask me. If this was the Australian Government, Apple and AT&T would have been ripped apart into shreds over this.
and requested a list of all applications that have been rejected and why.
I personally would LOVE to see this list. In full. This should be on wikileaks.
I've personally had enough of the Steve Jobs dictatorship.
Apple is truly evil these days.
What's sad is all sense and reason totally falls away when it comes to Apple.
Everyone bitches about Microsoft, but as soon as Apple does it, ohhh its all okay! Its okay BECAUSE ITS APPLE!
WTF people...
