Or on a Mac iTunes insisting on putting music in a certain weird place? I want to create my own folders, and maintain why own directory structure, and know exactly where stuff is because I put it there---not because Microsoft/Apple/Ubuntu think that's where I should keep stuff.
I know that you're not really looking for a solution - but that behaviour in iTunes is optional. You can turn it off, and then iTunes will use whatever folder structure you've already got.
The thing is that 99% of iTunes users don't know, and don't want to know, exactly where in the filesystem their music is stored, they just want to click on iTunes and see it. So that option is on by default.
My old bank closed my online banking account without warning, and without bothering to tell me they had. I called them and they said it was because "I had a virus". This, despite the fact that I run a secure operating system (with no known viruses) and have an up-to-date virus scanner. Couldn't they just suspend my account until I "fixed" the problem? No, I had to open a whole new one.
You can't find a VHS player with S-Video out anymore at a reasonable price.
That's because VHS tapes store video in the composite format on the tape. There's no point in putting separated video out on a VHS deck because the quality wouldn't be any better.
It's two things, but of those two, primarily only one of them.
The iPod, if not the best sounding music player, is easily one of the best. But mostly it's the UI. It's difficult to explain why if you haven't used one for a few days, but the iPod UI, to use a cliche, just works. Other players just seem clunky and awkward by comparison.
I'm sure for many others the looks of the device play a big factor as well, but I'd still be using an iPod if it was brown.
When I'm setting up a new system, I hate using sudo for a ton of commands and would rather have access to a root shell while I'm first setting up a computer or when I'm setting up a new application.
The one benefit of Vista will be to stop manufacturers from putting crappy integrated graphics into laptops (even apple does this on the non-pro line).
I installed Vista on my non-pro MacBook and Glass works just fine. So the graphics may be "crappy" but they're not crappy enough. Personally, I'm glad the MacBook has integrated graphics - it improves the battery life signifcantly. If I wanted proper 3D hardware I would have bought a MacBook Pro - that's what they're for.
Just tested this with a friend - the URLs get through fine when sent with Adium. So they're being blocked by the client software - not the network itself.
It's difficult to be wrong about a definition especially when we lacked one.
It is possible to be wrong, however, in statements like: "Pluto is so similar to the eight planets that it deserves the same name." - because it isn't really similar at all, and so therefore it doesn't.
Long ago I learned it was a planet and I see no reason to unlearn it. Why should I?
Because we were wrong. It's orbit is incredibly un-circular, it wildly off the plane of the solar system, and it's smaller than the moon! It never belonged in the pigeon-hole we've labelled "planet".
Part of science is accurate classification. We can't label something just because we want to.
A lot of these new features sound like they require server-side support. Do they still support publishing to servers other than BlogSpot? I don't use it and would prefer not to.
Wow, Memepool. I'd almost forgotten about it.
Fark is still up.
Post hoc ergo propter hoc.
That's the same reason I buy CDs and DVDs today - I like the box and the other documentation it comes with.
the FCC is effectively denying Americans the right to hear news and ideas from other countries.
Sure, because, it's not like internet access is useful for that, or anything.

I did. At another bank.

That's why only S-VHS decks have them.
This whole article seems to be based on the lack of a "log out" button, except... there is a log out button!
Here's a screenshot
It's right there in the top right.
Rule 3: Spammers are stupid.
Orange UK has supported EDGE for years. They also support HSCSD. (Remember that?)
Orange used to be quite the innovative network, back in the day. They jumped the shark when they killed off Wildfire.

No it isn't.
Did you even click the link in the article? YouTube is an app, and will not be viewed in Safari.
The site you link to is for other phones.
There's already a foolproof solution. My bank never contacts me by e-mail! So I know that all e-mails claiming to be from my bank are fake.
Quite simple really.
You must have a Pro account. Free accounts display ads.
I know that Slashdot is often a bit late with the news, but this BBC news story was written on 6 July, 2004!

sudo -i

This is about forcing something on the consumer that they don't want.
Rubbish. You, the player, are given the choice of kissing another boy in the game. If that offends you... don't!

Best. Use of a non standard port. Ever.

So you're saying tradition doesn't matter?
Yes, I am. Tradition has no place in science. We can't keep believing that the Earth is flat just because it's traditional.
