I am about to start investigating and building a similar system using ATI's Radeon AIW cards and a P3 with tons of hard disk space. Too bad neither Tivo or Replay are available as multi-system devices:(
Folks, lets not get excited. Their real problem is preventing their pilots (most of them ex Air Force jocks) from crashing their planes. The seem to bring an airliner down more often than their software.
Just curious. I've been hearing about Tivo on virtually every media outlet and have yet to see one or a clone being shipped overseas. When can we get a device which can handle 220V, PAL AND record multiple channels? I'd dump by VCR in a second for one of these.
Its amusing reading some of the comments here and comparing them to the cheerleading that was going on when Red Flag Unix was announced. Lets face it folks there is no legal mechanism to enforce the GPL in China.
Wait! Microsoft beta tested their activation in China.. perhaps thats the way to go eh?;)
That slashdot will soon stop advocating the usage of banner redux software like junkbusters:) Imagine having to rely on banner ads and sponsorships for make payroll!
Wonder what would happen if one accidentally piped a BS MP3 through the sound blaster while it was connected to the line? Would the perky umm.. lyrics boost the line speed?:)
As one of my friends in the semi-conductor industry said.. Anyone can make one, its making thousands and millions (ok, dozens when it comes to launch vehicles) cheaply and reliably that counts.
Still a long way (about 5-10 years) to go before launching sats can be turned into a business in India I think!
Nah.. just make them sex and/or status symbols. It has worked like magic for Nokia in Asia where the phone is as much of an accessory as it is a necessity.
Actually you cannot BUY a player in Hong Kong which is not hacked. The Asian region selection is pretty crap and given that most of the US movies do not make it to the theaters here.. US DVD's sell like hotcakes here.
I was a part of the US IT Trade Mission that followed the Global Linux expo. One of the stats (revealed by Ambassador Bosworth himself) was that Korea has surpassed Finland in the penetration of mobile phones.
There are also 4.5 million WAP enabled phones now in circulation. Yeah.. try beating that in Malaysia. We're talking nation wide penetration (now.. now... lets not get peverted about this) of cell phones, not just KL.:)
Every human wants his 15 minutes of fame. The appellate court is no different. The judges on the court would welcome a landmark case which would make history (since the supreme court rejected it, its unlikely to get sent back to them again, IANAL disclaimer).
Absolutely, a large part of the poverty is due to a couple of reasons (other than western perceptions) which are corruption and illiteracy. The net can be tools used to fight both.
Poverty is relative. My equivalent culture shock was loosing my way around Chicago's downtown and ending up driving through the projects. Ugh! For a second I thought I was driving through the slums of Bombay.
Jeez, I hope that was loaded with sarcasm that I did not detect.
Indian "dot coms" and the dumb ass press have conned the people into thinking that the 'nets all about money. Well sir, its not. The internet is at its best one of the best means of breaking down barriers in society.
Think about education when you think about bringing technology to the villages. About two decades ago, your argument could well have been applied to the remote village educational programs which were run using INSAT... well, you know what, TV brought about a huge change in our villages....
WAIT.. lets talk about the wonders that the Rural exchanges developed by C-DOT brought to our villages. People can actually make calls to anywhere in India from virtually anywhere else. Your argument could well have applied to telephones a couple of years ago.
Umm.. MSDOS + Turbo Lightning? :)

Keep your eyes open for SyncML phones like the Ericsson T39. Looks like a pretty cool standard and fairly open...

Know what BOFH stands for :)

They generate a unique email address for any / every different situation that you need an address for.
Assuming that the poor guy's startup page is not set to slashdot! If thats the case the thief knows whats going on. ;)

Jeez! Almost read that as "Blair uses Dope" and sent the link off to Matt Drudge :)

Or perhaps the holy grail of all road warriors a long life battery?? Would make electric scooters / cars actually practical!
500K pageviews? Less than $300/month given the current ad rates. On the other hand this could be the killer B2C site that everyones been waiting for ;)
Not usable as a media server, but definately awesome as a jukebox. I've seen a 400 disk changer also being advertised in the market.
This rant has been brought to you by the letter K and M :)

Interesting that it does not filter out the slashdot ad server :)

Yep this is what we can expect with every village getting 'connected'.
