If Jar Jar had been in the first movie, he would have been loved and had figures of him sold on the black market and been incorporated as a real character in fan fiction, while Ewoks would be universally hated and have fanfiction written about 1001 ways to kill them.

Um, you must have forgotten since it was so long ago, but the Ewoks WERE universally hated, and there was plenty of fanfiction about their messy and untimely demise. Hell, my dad had a bumpersticker on his company car that said 'Eat An Ewok'.

That being said, Jar Jar (as well as all the other cutesy kid-appeal characters) are just the product of Lucas trying to find a lock on a target audience, ANY target audience, that will continue to support his tenure with the story that made his name.

Sounds like we could have a parallel to Ice-9, from Breakfast of Champions.

For those who haven't read it, Ice-9 was a chemical agent developed so that Marines wouldn't have to walk through mud - it solidified the water in the mud, so they could pass over it, not through it. Problem was, Ice-9 worked too well - one application of the stuff would freeze the entire planet via chain reaction, killing everything.

Just because we can do something, doesn't mean we should. We seem to have a very short sight when it comes to emerging technologies, and this could have globalkilling possibilities. I hope their QA department knows what they're doing : )

Sure, I'll agree that the fight scene was too long (that's the pro-wrestler influence for ya), but the premise rocked, the movie had a great flow, and you just KNOW that domination thru commerce is truly the way to best mankind. I'm a hell of a lot more able to buy subliminal manipulation more than total environmental immersion, which is where I think Matrix failed (well, that and Keanu-fu), and They Live excelled.

I'm just saying that I had to suspend disbelief a lot more for Matrix. They're both good watchable movies for different reasons, but They Live made me look a little closer at the world outside the theater - Matrix didn't.

  6. Re:Is this really news for Nerds? on 'Matrix' Sequels In Trouble? · · Score: 1

Dark City wasn't bad (anything with Richard O'Brian is worth admission), but the best precursor to the Matrix was 1988's They Live. Matrix had some snazzy effects and a good twist to the 'unknowingly enslaved humans' story, but Rowdy Roddy Piper could kick Keanu's ass with both arms and a leg tied behind his back. Not only that, They Live's storyline was much more plausible and inherently creepier. Wachowski brothers can make a food flick, but they can't make you think like John Carpenter can.

Just another reason why you should NOT EVER have a cell phone. I refuse to wear one, and have passed over good jobs that require it. My time is MY TIME and I will not be at anyone's beck and call 24/7. Cell phones are nothing but hi-tech chains that hold you down.

I also think that any cell phone that plays 'dixie' or any other beepy melody ought to be immediately dunked in a bucket of water.

Sure do. There's a great company online called CafePress that you just upload images to, and they create a free storefront for you - you decide how much over the base price the user's cost is, and they do all the manufacturing, processing, and shipping, and cut you a check for the difference at the end of the month. Yes, there's NO OUT OF POCKET COSTS. Pardon the french, but it's a fucking brilliant business model. Wish I had thought of it!

I was left with a definite sense from the original article that the kid was nowhere near the popular circle, and his actions before the election were decidedly premeditated toward the end of getting popular enough to stand a chance in the election. I admire his forethought and he has definately shown he has the stones to deal with social double standards, which he will run into all his life. Here's a guy who will make a good leader later in life.

The War on Drugs has been a consistently neglected topic in discussions surrounding this federal election. My question is, do you believe the War on Drugs has been an unqualified success, and if not, what would you change about it if elected president?

Both candidates are far too spineless to do what really needs to happen to end the war on drugs:

    Legalize/decriminalize everything.

Short term impact would be a little messy, but the long run would pay for all. Once all recreational drugs are legal, the 'illegal thrill' goes away, legitimate businesses can capitalize where only the mafia has previously, and problem drug users (addicts) will overdose themselves and die. Prisons could be used for actual criminals again, law enforcement could focus on achievable goals again, and the economy would boom with the newfound trade.
Know why this will never happen? Because our government REFUSES to ever admit it was wrong about anything, even if doing so will solve a national crisis.
