..how broad a definition of violence do these findings apply to? Would say, watching sports qualify? or even better playing them? Should we ban PE in school and ESPN from cable?
Concentration is a skill. It's not something that comes instantly to everyone, it's something that needs to be practiced. And it's not hard to practice it, either, but it does take some discipline.
This point can't be emphasized enough. It's not exactly subtle but at the same time few appear to realize it. Concentration, discipline are skills like any other. How do you gain a skill, how do you improve it? Practice, practice, practice. Obviously you can concentrate if you force yourself, you state that outright in your question. There's no magic potion here, you don't need to see a psychiatrist. I hate to resort to a cliche but you really just need to buckle down and force yourself through this. It will get easier as you continue, you will do better as time goes on. That is the crucial point you have to keep foremost in your mind. Finally while a lot of the suggestions here are not going to cure your problem they are worth considering as they'll make things easier:
Get rid of the caffeine. While it's great for that quick burst of alertness over time it makes you tense and edgy. This is the kind of subtle irritation that can be tough to deal with as it takes a while for most people to realize that it's even a problem
Physical activity. Getting some exercise wont take care of your concentration issue per se but being fit makes EVERYTHING easier in general. It's worth the effort.
You are what you eat. Get that junk food out of your diet and you'll notice a real improvement in your life overall. Once again this won't cure your problem in and of itself but like exercise having a good diet makes everything in your life easier.
Sorry. No magic tricks, no great secrets. Like most things in life, you can deal with this by some old fashioned hard work.
Just out of curiosity, does anyone think/. should have a policy regarding these kind of press releases? Sometimes they may contain useful information to be sure but here you have the Vice President of this very organization really just having the editors post a promo puff piece. Not to impinge on the credibility of an institute represented by the amazing "Father of Invention" as proclaimed by that hard hitting news source the Boulder Daily Camera, but seeing how this issue has come up recently for google it seems relevent to wonder if/. to should be considering it as well.
At last people are taking this stuff seriously...
Now they just need to catch that guy who shows up here looking like me and screws up my karma.
Sure you COULD put your faith in the authorities, but do you seriously think they're going to interrupt their donut break to help out another slashdot thug on the RIAA hit list? Why wait around for them when for a small fee you can start off fresh, fully karma loaded and with a "VERY low user id number". Act now! While supplies last:
Hate to call this Orwellian, but it seems so to me.
Winston and Julia had a hard time finding genuine food (except from the proles). I remember them drinking "Victory Coffee". The same applied to cigarettes and chocolate.
This isn't so absurd.
Yes it is. No one is forcing you to eat at McDonalds or do your grocery shopping at the local 7-Eleven. You want fine dining eat at gourmet restaurants. There is no shortage of organic produce or premium quality coffee/chocolate/ice cream or anything. If these disappear it will only be because no one wants them. This isn't a rant about lack of choice, your just whinning because you're not paying bargin prices for top quality.
I sound elitist.. and, I guess, in this case, I am.
No, the problem is you are not. You can't shop at the local quickie mart and expect them to stock your Kenya AA (or AAA or Green Mountain blends, etc) for pennies on the dollar.
Don't forget this isn't a done deal everyone.
Anyone with a fax machine and some intelligent comments might still make a difference as Judge J. Frederick Motz is soliciting comments. Check out Redhat's

But based on our recent experiences with suicide terrorists, has anyone thought about the simplest
method of hiding, importing, and distributing the virus?
A suicide terrorist could EAT the virus, and go on vacation in the US, visiting as many places as
possible, breathing on as many people as possible.
From a report I've seen, tv documentary no links
sorry, that's considered rather unlikely. Physicians considering it said that by the time the person is contagious they're too sick to get around easily and it's readily obvious to anyone looking at them that they are very ill.
I see many highly moderated posts here saying
one of two things either restraint is necessary
in the face of this tragedy or that we in the
US brought this upon ourselves. The first while
a worthy sentiment is naive beyond imagining the
other is foolish beyond belief. Anyone who
thinks that there is any possibility restraint
for this unprovoked massacre cleary does not
appreciate the scale of what has occured. In
all likelyhood thousands are now dead, this goes
beyond terrorism, this is a declaration of war.
If this does turn out to have been a product
of terrorism from the middle east, something
which can definately not be assumed, those who
are now dancing in the streets of Palestine or
think that we somehow deserved this are going
to reap a harvest of destruction that no one
is going to be able to look upon without sorrow.
This is now inevitable.
If this is terrorism out of the middle east many
have stated that retaliation is foolish as we
cannot be sure of the terrorist group who did it.
Once again you fail to appreciate the scope of
this action. We may not know exactly who did it
but the finger beyond the trigger is obvious.
Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan revel in their support
of these terrorists. We may not know exactly who
did this action, but we know enough.
...a few minor tweaks could make this design
perfect. The current setup makes it too easy for "Seating Pirates", via the use a tough plastic
cushion or piece of plywood, to steal unlimited
usage of the Seat. By extending the spike length
and having them extrude from the back of the seat
pirates could be deterred. Still retribution by
lawsuit against the offender would of course be
more palatable than this minor design change, so
never mind.
I'm sure they're adequately written novels
(meaning I'm sure he's learned a lesson
from Xenocide)
You clearly haven't read Children of the Mind otherwise you'd know better. Xenocide
was tough to get through, but that one was impossible. It's unfortunate but I think it's becoming rather clear that Card is morphing
into a more literate Piers Anthony. Able to start a series rather well with a good idea, only to follow up with endless junk. I'm tempted to think
he's just trying to milk his success for all it's
worth, but his statements seem to indicate it's more a matter of conflicting goals.
He's drifted away from writing good books, to writing books that simply put forth his MESSAGE. Card's always tried to use his works
to make statements but we've hit the point where that now seems to be their only purpose.
I guess if BGC can get remade at this late
date then they figure anything is fair game. But,
they missed the boat on this one. If they had
continued with the OAV series instead of taking
that detour into that horrible TV series, I mean
the first one, maybe we would have had something.
Now the license is so tainted with junk, Sailor Sammy?!, you can't
help but dread what's going to come out of this.
No, this will only have curiosity value. Too bad,
it was a great OAV series when it first came out.
It seems excessive but speaking as someone who
formally worked at a libarary for large university
I can see the reason for this. We also ended
up having to ban email & chat room use. What happened was that we brought in all these computers to help people in research & such but a
small group of people ended up monopolizing them
for hours so they could hang out in X-Rated chat rooms and
do their email. Anybody who wanted to actually look up information for a paper or research project was out of luck.
Sure Miller has done some great comics, but
he also wrote Robocop 3. So I'd say it would be
wise not to get our hopes up that his classic
work will be properly transported to the big
screen.

Your proposition is too either/or. Just to take your example, certainly your doctor may require your DNA profile but why should your insurance company have it? I would say it is accepted that at times you have to give out certain personal information in order to have your doctor treat you or perhaps get a loan for a house. The point is that it is your choice. You are in control of your personal information and you decide who gets it and for what purpose. There isn't, nor should there be, any requirement that you have to vomit out your private life to the world just gain access to basic services.
The BBC seems to have exagerated the incident a fair amount. There was no real communications disruption and the shuttle crew was never in danger. This article at CNN clarifies it a bit. Scytle
