A "conservative christian" calling the Pope dogmatic is like the pot calling the kettle black.
Sounds like somebody doesn't know what a conservative Christian is. Conservatives believe in salvation through faith in Christ alone. The bible is a list of good things to do and stories, but my salvation doesn't flow from anything writen in the bible. Fundamentalists are the dogmatic ones who interpret the bible literally, who bash gays and lesbians and generally aren't very nice to anybody who isn't in their group or a potential convert.
Note, however that most fundies are not like what is described above. Some run for political office in Canada as members of the Canadian Alliance.
I really wanted to say as a "conservative Christian" your opinion doesn't mean jack, but that would be rude.
You do realise that what you're saying here is that a Redhat user's opinion of Debian doesn't mean jack?
Unless you meant that due to my faith my opinion on anything means jack, and I should be stripped of my right to vote, hold public office and defend myself in court. In which case you would likely be a bigot who likes to descriminate based on religion and/or faith.
I suppose my point is that there is no such thing as an unbiased opinion. You don't have one, I don't have one, CowboyNeal doesn't have one. Let's get over it, it's not that hard.
My friends and I had always planned (but never got around to) making a "WWDLD?" bumper sticker or t-shirt or whatever (What Would the Dalai Lama Do?)
That's actually a neat idea. But I thought that the Dalai Lama was like the pope, somebody chosen by the body of believers or their leaders to lead the religon, so there is always a Dalai Lama. Correct me if I'm wrong.
The idea would be that he's still around to ask (unlike Jesus) and is more likely to be a better role model than more than a few Catholic Priests (cough altarboys cough).
That was my point. Jesus make a better role model than any other human, priest, pope, pastor, whatever.
Not only is that a caterogical lie, according to Catholic doctrine, you don't even need to be Baptized or believe in God or "accept J.C. as your personal saviour" to be redeemed. All you need to do is to recognize your fallen nature in some way, and wish for redemption. That is "baptism by desire."
I'm not being anti-catholic. As I said, I have many friends who are catholic. I'm stating a fact about pre-JP2 catholicism.
We declare, say, define, and pronounce that it is absolutely necessary for the salvation of every human creature to be subject to the Roman Pontiff. -- Pope Boniface VIII, the Bull Unam Sanctam, 1302.
Yeah, only difference is Stallman isn't a dogmatic leader to 2 billion people.
Nor is the pope. He is only the dogmatic leader of Catholics, who do not number 2 billion. Protestants do not adhere to the pope's dogmatic statements, they believe the bible as their last authority.
You wouldn't believe how much power over the masses the Pope has.
It's sickening, isn't it? As a relatively conervative Christian, I can't believe that these "Christians" don't think for themselves. WWJD is replaced with WWMPD (What would my priest do?), at least with most of the Catholics I know.
I've seen people flock to the streets and wait for 2-3 hours just to catch a glimpse of his holiness passing by (yes, 2 hours waiting for a 5-second sighting). And people absolutely refusing to compromise on ANY point the Pope has decided on, is totally frustrating.
Some people are nuts, and others are Catholic in that crowd. According to Catholic dogma, Roman Catholics believe that complete submission to the pope is required for salvation.
On the other hand, this guy is innocent until proven guilty, and deserves his day in court. Is there a clause in the law that says it's your own fault if you are injured (however injury is defined in the particular situation) during commission of a crime? There should be. It could be called the "Personal Responsibility Act".
The problem is that injury compensation and the like are covered in tort law. That means that judges and not legislators define the law. It's 100% precident.
OTOH a spammer IS innocent until proven guilty and is entitled to his day in court. It's his legal right to confront his accusers (the blacklist people) and I don't blame him for trying.
Actually, you want us (Canada) to invade. Think about it, better beer, lower drinking age, etc.
Nah, we'll just make them (and the rest of the world) our slaves while they worship their benovalent dictators in the frozen north. See here for the battle plans!
1) Holiday Inn Express 2) Radisson 3) Travelodge (www.travelodgesaskatoon.com)
The Holiday Inn and Radisson both have ethernet drops in some rooms. The Travelodge will give you a 3Com 802.11B card when you checkin and take it back when you checkout. I think you can also use your own 802.11B card. It also has (for business class rooms) a printer/fax in the room for you to use.
I'm sorry if that sounds like an advert, but I stayed there and it was great.
In program user profiles should have died with win 9X. All the big OSes now have some form of login and user managment system..
The problem is though, that people don't use them. 99% of the people I know just use one login name for the whole family. My family does it, and all my friends families do it. They use profiles in Netscape or Eudora or some other mail reader, not the ones in Windows. Oddly enough, most of them don't use IE, either, though. So my sample may be tainted.

He was either the principle or another party to the offence, but since we don't know which one, he can't be convicted.
See Regina v. Thatcher (Saskatchewan Court of Queen's Bench) It was a high profile case in the province involving a provincial politician.

The judge probably knows that Windows is brain dead, and hard to program, especially if one must buy the commercial developer tools.
No free stuff + no developer tools == no scripts for the kiddy to use.
I don't know how often this sort of judgement is made, but you can check CANLII (www.canlii.org).
Canada does make some stupid judgements, though. I do know of one case that is going to the Supreme Court of Canada soon, in which the convected murderer was convicted of either killing his wife, or paying somebody else to do it for him. That was the actual verdict returned in the Saskatchewan Court of Queen's Bench -- "We the jury find the defendant guilty of murder in the first degree, for either murdering his wife or hiring somebody to do it for him"
Having not read the article, and going from memory, Mafiaboy was sentenced to 8 months in juvy in Quebec. I think this is fair, he's getting an education, and punishment at the same time.
Among the "French-speaking PM Quebec born candidates" is your beloved Trudeau, loved everywhere but in QC. Also, I point out that QC didn't elect Chrétien, Ontario did.
Trudeau is hated in Saskatchewan and Alberta, too. "Everywhere but QC" seems to mean Ontario.
Don't blame where the PM are from, or what language they speak. Blame who elected them (and keeps them in place).
I'm in favour of the rest of Canada separating from Ontario. You're from Quebec, so how 'bout it? Move away from Hamilton and then we'll leave.
Or, I've got an even better idea... Let the west and Quebec VOTE THE SAME WAY. I know, it's a radical idea, but if Quebec, Saskatchewan, Alberta, BC, and Manitoba all vote for the same party, the Liberals are screwed.
PS.. Cretien doesn't speak EITHER language very well, THAT bothers me. Him speaking French OR English well would be a good thing.
Gah! Two parties in Canada, and they're both in Ontario!! Somebody want to start one a little closer to Saskatoon than Toronto? Toronto and Hamilton are both really bad drives from Saskatoon. How about Saskatoon, Regina, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg?
Okay, knowing full well how Westminster style Parliament works (Ie: Canada, Australia, UK, etc), is the US system different?
I guess what I'm asking is, if a bill is passed by the house, does it then have to be passed by the senate and then the president? Or can the house do it all by itself?

Fair IP Laws?

And yes, I am a Canadian IP lawyer. And I do think that significant reforms need to be made to IP laws.
And you're posting as AC why? If you really are an IP lawyer, you've read Canada's Copyright Act. Here I quote Section 80:
80. (1) Subject to subsection (2), the act of reproducing all or any substantial part of
(a) a musical work embodied in a sound recording,
(b) a performer's performance of a musical work embodied in a sound recording, or
(c) a sound recording in which a musical work, or a performer's performance of a musical work, is embodied
onto an audio recording medium for the private use of the person who makes the copy does not constitute an infringement of the copyright in the musical work, the performer's performance or the sound recording.
Limitation
(2) Subsection (1) does not apply if the act described in that subsection is done for the purpose of doing any of the following in relation to any of the things referred to in paragraphs (1)(a) to (c):
(a) selling or renting out, or by way of trade exposing or offering for sale or rental;
(b) distributing, whether or not for the purpose of trade;
(c) communicating to the public by telecommunication; or
(d) performing, or causing to be performed, in public.
So if I do it for ME and NOBODY ELSE, it's legal. If I make a copy for a friend it's illegal. Makes sense to me.
For those who want to check it out: here is a link.
Even though we're supposedly getting our own version of the DMCA, you can take a look at Canada's CURRENT IP laws. Stuff like reverse engineering and such are perfectly legal, and copying audio cds is limited.
Our CD copying laws work like this: the government collects a levy on blank media. This is to compensate artists for piracy. Businesses who use lots of cds can apply to have the levy refunded. Canadians can copy a friends audio cd for themselves, but are not allowed to do it commercially or on a large scale.
Software is governend by licence, just like the USA, and IIRC the SSSCA is not even remotely possible here.
i ask you this: what the hell is the point of maintaining public ownership if it doesn't mean decent and affordable service for all??
There isn't one. The main reason that I'm opposed to privitisation of Sasktel is that I've seen what's going on in Alberta with Telus. Now, Telus isn't nearly as bad as what I hear about Telstra, but it's bad next to Sasktel. $25/month for 1000 minutes of long distance within Canada? What? Sasktel: $22.50/month UNLIMITED. Oh, lest we forget: Sasktel's basic plan: $22/month. Telus: $25/month. Telus' customer service is also quite bad.
I also know that Sasktel is making a health profit and not recieving _That much_ government help, and pays the government most of its profit.
Or... broadband in Saskatchewan! Except unlike ND, we actually have it:)
Thanks to CommunityNet any town with a school or hospital gets broadband by 200[34]. That'll be fun, because then I can move to East Bumfuk, SK and be happy with my broadband:)
What I really want to know, though is why did the fransaskois schools get is before the English schools?
Which is a shame, because if you could, they'd probably cost about $10. But instead, you have to get a 1.5 GHz monster or something, even if it's just going to be a router or email host.
I agree. But you can still get a Celeron 500/533 for $65CDN at Techtronics in Saskatoon.
The other problem is that you can't move your 500 mhz Celery to a 700mhz model. You need a new motherboard because the parts aren't available.
Quit whining. It turns out that a G3 at 700 Mhz is plenty enough to run OSX. If you're planning on playing games -- maybe not (if they're hardcore 3D, anyway).
Quake and Quake II (see Fruits of Dojo for a port to OSX) run just fine under OSX. Unreal and Unreal Tournament run just fine under OS9. Starcraft runs great on both.
I'll agree about its disk speed. Its developers tools are kick-arse, and are fairly easy to learn. I'm still trying to leard ObjC.
I've got a P2-233 running OpenBSD-3.1 for a wired NAT box (It was available in their CVS tree for a while). I also have an iBook with Airport, so I thought "Hmm, maybe I could get a wireless card for this thing". So I did, a Linksys PCI/PC-Card adapter (wi driver in OpenBSD).
It runs quite happily in HostAP mode, with bridging enabled, my wired and wireless networks are on the same subnet. Works very well.
N.B. OpenBSD 3.1 doesn't support WEP in HostAP mode, but OpenBSD-current does. This doesn't affect me, because I allow anyone to get on my network if they choose.
