why are people rebooting their OS X boxes often enough for it to be of anything more than curiosity value ? Is it just an "old habits die hard" thing causing you to reboot so often ?
I use a laptop. I regularly shut it down, or put it to sleep, but when plugged in (usually only on weekends) it's never shut down.
You should, however compare the times it takes OS9 to come out of sleep to OSX.
OS X.2 looks REALLY cool, but there is one thing that will probably never change. It's not a technical issue, but business practices at Apple.
They still sell "North American English" versions of their computers all over the continent. That's not so bad, until the speach recognition doesn't recognise "schedule" and "zed", to name a few.
It also doesn't know "colour", "realise", or "flavour" to name a few.
It would be quite easy for Apple to sell "US English" in the USA, and "International English" in Canada.
SaskTel, the provincial Crown phone monopoly in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan, is investing CDN$80 million into starting a subsiduary that will provide broadband service to Newcastle, NSW, Australia.
See the link here. It's skimpy on details, but it's real broadband. Take it from a SaskTel customer, they're good ($22/month, unlimited (128k) DSL to $100/month for unlimited (3m) DSL)
The thing is, though... that Linux is not for mom&pops. It's for hardcore users who know what they use their computers for. It's also an excellent server
Windows is for the average joe who doesn't know how to use a computer, or doesn't want to use it too much. It's fine for that, especially since Win2K came out..
Canada does take that a bit more seriously...for instance, photo driver's licenses are much newer there and were fought much harder (and, at least two provinces I can think of, Quebec and New Brunswick, leave the photo as being optional. The yearly report of the Societe de l'assurance from Quebec says that about 11-13% of Quebecois decline to have the photo on their license. Clearly not a majority, but those are people who clearly value the idea that they do not want nor need a photographic identifier.)In fact, no Canadian provincial legislature has ever mandated that a photo be on a license (even in Ontario, it's the minister or transportation that has ordered the photo license, and the minister of health that has ordered the photo health insurance plan card.)
Saskatchewan also does not have a manditory photo licence. But we will by June/03. I didn't refuse, because we need photo ID to buy booze here, but still....
Some government monopolies are not a bad thing. I live in the Saskatchewan, the home and heartland of Canadian socialism. Here's a list of our Crown monopolies:
SGI: Saskatchewan Government Insurance. Mostly a monopoly in auto insurance, there is no other choice. Lowest rates in North America. They also compete with the private sector on home and other insurance. Apparently they compete with private insurance in Manitoba and Ontario too, but I'm not sure.
SaskPower: Electricity. Some of the lowest rates in North America.
Sasktel: Telephone. No local competition, and some of the lowest rates in North America. They have competition the long-distance sector, because that's controlled by the CRTC.
SaskEnergy: Natural Gas. IIRC, not the lowest rates, but close.
Keep in mind, the CIC (Crown Investments Corporation, the Crown company which owns all of the above monopolies) does not get much in the way of government kickbacks and taxpayer help, and they pay the government each year, kind of like another tax.
The other thing is, in say the australian config machines... you get to choose New Zealand, International English, Australia etc.
The configs are slightly different, so when you boot it up, you basically choose 4 buttons, and then you spend an hour as it restores everything:)
I'd like to be able to do that. I live in Canada, and we get the USA version (They call it "North American English", there is no such thing.)of the software. Its spell checker doesn't know how to spell to the satisfaction of most English profs here, and the speech synthesis does not pronounce certain words properly and especially, it doen't pronounce the letter "Z" properly.
On OS X just use AppleWorks.. it opens MS Office files
Not very well it doesn't. If there is anything like complex tables or most things more complex than straight text, it doesn't work.
I can't open the.xls files my chem prof puts on his page in AppleWorks, I can do it in OpenOffice in Windows, and I can reboot my iBook into Linux an run OpenOffice from there.
What if you locked everything, but he had a nifty picking mechanism and knew how to use it?
But that's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about a guy who sees something wrong with the lock. Not how to get around a perfectly good lock.
An analogy; you're talking about somebody using a dictionary attack against a machine. I'm talking about somebody who sees that the lock cylander is busted.
The thing that really bugs me about DOS attacks, besides the fact that they cause damage and annoy admins, is that they don't show any real talent.
It's not impressive to bring a system to its knees by DOSing it. You do, however have to respect the guy who discovers some huge hole that he exploits on some system and gains access.
You gotta respect him more if he tells you about it, and how to fix it.
My school (Mount Royal College) uses a LDAP database to store the user's passwords. It works with all their windoze boxes (95,98,NT,2000) AND their Red Hat system they teach programming on.
Might be worth a look. They use PAM on Linux, and Novell client on Windows, and the mac.
Actually, it's closer to 85%, it's just 50-50 in Montreal. Anyway, yes.. living there is better than living in a "free" society that forces implantable id chips on its citizens.
I'd rather be a CITIZEN of Quebec, than a SUBJECT of the ROC or America.
(for those of you who don't know, there's two main parts of Canada, Quebec & Ontario, and the ROC (Rest of Canada))
And when you start your new country, it's gonna get REAL crowded REAL fast. Unless you prohibit immigration, of course. Maybe stop all the microchipped folk at the border.
I nominate Quebec as that country. They want to leave, and if they outlaw such shit, I'll be one of the first to immigrate.
listen up brothers and sisters come hear my desperate tale i speak of our friends of nature trapped in the dirt like a jail vegetables live in oppression, served on our tables each night this killing of veggies is madness, i say we take up the fight salads are only for murderers, coleslaw's a facist regime don't think that they don't have feelings, just cause a radish can't scream

Simple mistake... mph != mps.
:)
I was going by mph == mps
Let's all have a good laugh at my expense...
My bad, confusing mph with mps.
Apparently, these things move at 900000mph, or a few times the speed of light.
Isn't that impossible? I thought it took an infinite amount of energy to reach the speed of light.
"These people resemble musicians but technically are not."
They always struck me as the people who played "connect the dots" and coloured in colouring books.
Now, I wonder how Sony made devices handle these non-cd's ;)
My sister tried to play a J. Lo CD in my Sony CDU948S(4x8 burner). I had to paper-clip it. I was mad.
That is all. There is now an official boycott of all things Silver CD with no CDDA(TM) on it..

Apparently Orinoco/Prism cards are supported through a third party driver at Wirelessdriver

The Normans were there, but ruled by Anglo-Saxons.
The Molson company moved in, which was owned by Anglo-Saxons.
The Anglo-Saxon company petetioned the Anglo-Saxon government which ruled the Norman majority.
LaTeX?
LaTeX is all well and good if:
1) You know LaTeX.
2) The person who's recieving your latex knows latex.
Otherwise, you use MSOffice, or Corel WordPerfect (If you learned before about 1996)

I'd say their selling SUVs on the american market was a good idea.
